Have a grand wedding or family reunion in this masterfully restored château in the Dordogne, where the new meets the (very) old.

Inside, you'll find modern fixtures alongside family antiques, with some parts of the castle dating back as far as the 5th century. Perched on top of a rock overlooking unspoilt French countryside, you'll feel just like royalty. For a taste of local character, take a long stroll through the gardens to the nearby sleepy village.

Up to 20 guests can stay in this sprawling château with ten charming bedrooms. Have a high style dinner party together inside the grand banquet hall, or spread out among the 15 hectare park to dine al fresco or lounge by the pool under the French sunshine. Spectacular architectural details abound like the moat, the turrets, and the 18th century pigeonnier overlooking the private pool.

This holiday château is easily reachable from Bergerac (11 km), the heart of the Dordogne region. There you can shop, dine, or learn about the region's wine-making at the Musee du Vins. Then set off on a tour; dozens of wineries are nestled between Bergerac and your château. Pick up many bottles - here you have so much to celebrate!

Region

Experience the magnificence of the Dordogne River whilst staying close to Bergerac, a historic town with a fine reputation for its wine, gastronomy, history and art. What’s more, Bergerac is easily accessible with its own international airport and it is just over an hour from Bordeaux with TGV connections to Paris.

In the Périgord Pourpre and wonderfully located for reaching the Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde regions of south-western France, Bergerac is classified as a city of art and history. A stroll around Bergerac’s old town will be high on your itinerary – explore medieval cobbled lanes as you admire half-timbered houses, pretty squares as well as inviting shops and restaurants as you follow the fictional footsteps of Cyrano de Bergerac. On a Wednesday and Saturday morning, don’t miss the delightful market near the handsome Notre-Dame de Bergerac.

Sail along the Dordogne from Bergerac on board a traditional gabarre vessel or take a walk by the river’s edge before finding an idyllic spot for a picnic. Cycling enthusiasts will adore the voie verte from the Canal de Lalinde towards Mouleydier, Creysse and Bergerac, partly following the banks of the river. There are of course ample opportunities for canoeing along the Dordogne or hiking through the Périgord Pourpre’s forests, orchards and vineyards - the region’s natural beauty will captivate you with its mild climate and idyllic riverside scenery.

Wine lovers should visit the Château de Monbazillac, just south of Bergerac, or spend time sampling other wine appellations at vineyards and wine châteaux near the likes of Montravel, Pineuilh and Saussignac. Back to the charming town centre, taste a range of excellent wine at Bergerac’s Maison des Vins by the old harbour.

Beyond Bergerac, there are so many pretty places to discover. To the south-east is picture-perfect Issigeac and the bastide town of Beaumont-du-Périgord, both hosting enchanting weekly markets. Market lovers will also adore Sainte-Foy-la-Grande by the banks of the Dordogne, home to one of the Gironde’s most beautiful markets on a Saturday morning.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
We took over the property early 1998 and have done extensive restoration works since then with the support of the Historical Monuments of France.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

Besides its remarkable architectural features, this house has a generous soul that can be felt from the moment one arrives and that stays long with the guests after they leave.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The chateau is one of the mythical places in the region and its history spans over 1500 years, from the fall of the Roman Empire to today. It has played a role into the Grand History of France, as well as into the local and family history of the region, which adds to its charm.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
May 1940, HRH the grand duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and her family exiled themselves in the chateau, ex-filtrated from Luxembourg in extremis by France before the arrival of the German troops. They remained there for a few months under the protection of a section of Senegalese riflemen, before gaining Portugal… On June 16th 1940, they were joined in the chateau by the last empress-queen of Austria-Hungary Zita of Habsburg, sister of Felix of Bourbon-Parma, husband of Charlotte of Luxembourg. On her way to exile towards Spain via Bordeaux, Zita transited through Montastruc with her 8 children of which her elder son Otto of Habsburg, archduke of Austria.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Enjoy the Dordogne countryside – visit the many châteaux, and if a bit adventurous, canoe down the river – visit some of the local wine producers. We can recommend a few great ones.
Really eat?
Black truffles and foie-gras, with a glass of Pècharmant local red wine, or of Montbazillac.
Really see?
Visit Sarlat, and on the way, the numerous fortresses, troglodytic sites and prehistorical caves of the region. We are near the river that concentrates most of the sites…

What insider tip would you pass-on about the property or the area?
Take the time, slow down and enjoy the small villages, walking back roads and exploring local communities away from the main track.
