Set within 150 hectares of woodland, vines and fields, this 17th century stately home enjoys an exceptional natural setting, ideally located for visiting medieval villages, pre-historic caves, grand châteaux and the undulating landscapes of the Périgord region of France.
Domaine de la Louyre sleeps up to 12 guests across its two historic houses. Step into the beautiful main residence and admire original features, antique furnishings and a wonderful collection of artwork from across the world. The living room is refined with its grand fireplace, heavy wood beams, tiled flooring and elegant sofas whilst the light-filled kitchen and dining area is perfect for atmospheric meals with family and friends making the most of the region’s fine gastronomy.
Climb up the wooden staircase to four gorgeous bedrooms where historic elegance meets modern luxury. All four doubles feature king-size beds (three of which can be split into twins) and sumptuous bedding alongside three bathrooms (two en suite) with good quality toiletries. Another four guests will stay in the little house by the courtyard with its simple yet charming living area and bathroom on the ground floor and two double/twin bedrooms beneath the eaves upstairs.
On warm summer days, enjoy your morning coffee beneath the wisteria-clad terrace and gather for long lunches on the shaded tables in the courtyard. The swimming pool also awaits, fenced off for safety, and there’s a lovely area in the garden with deck chairs and shade sails. Spend quality time with loved ones as you splash around in the pool, play boules and table tennis or enjoy long walks through the glorious garden and beyond.
Another unique highlight of this domaine is the Napoleon Museum, set within the grounds around 1km away. Arrange a guided tour to see the private collection of paintings, sculptures and other artefacts housed in the manoir owned by Napoleon’s descendants.
There’s a characterful village just over five minutes away by car with restaurants and an épicerie selling local produce or head to the bustling market town of Le Bugue for further amenities as well as canoeing/kayaking and other family-friendly activities.

Region
The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.
The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.
The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

When did you become the owner?
We became owners 20 years ago for one part and entirely since 2022.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
A rare sanctuary of tranquillity, where time stands still amidst ancient limestone walls, offering a harmonious connection with nature’s purest essence. Acquired from my parents as part of my wish to pass it on from generation to generation.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
A stately home steeped in history, dating back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, bearing the marks of time and transformation. Once scarred by fire in the aftermath of the French Revolution, it evolved with the addition of charming barns in later years. In the 20th century, its legacy took a regal turn when Princess Napoléon and her husband embraced it as part of their grand estate following World War I. Today, this noble residence offers a rare glimpse into the past, blending timeless elegance with captivating stories.

Beautiful house
My extended family and I very much enjoyed our stay at this beautiful house. The house itself is a magnificent old stone building, which has been decorated in a very elegant manner. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped, and we very much appreciated the coffee machine. Younger family members enjoyed the pool and ping pong table. Being an old house, it does have some quirks, but these are very much outweighed by the charm and grandeur of the rooms and outdoor areas. The location is scenic and peaceful - but within reasonable driving distance of area attractions such as Lascaux and villages along the Dordogne. The local village is lovely, with a handy small supermarket, great boulangerie and several restaurants. Our hosts were welcoming, friendly and helpful - particularly when we needed medical assistance.
