Overview

Exclusive Pool Villa/House
Great Value
Sustainable Collection
Ideal for Kids

Whether you’re a couple seeking a peaceful getaway in the Dordogne or a family looking for plenty of features to keep the children happy, this 18th century villa enjoys such a beautiful setting high above the rolling French countryside.

Appreciate La Closerie’s classic ambience with stone walls, wood-burning fireplaces and simple, rustic furnishings. The owners have also renovated certain parts of the house for their guests' comfort. The older and original part of the house features a living area (with air-conditioning) as well as three upstairs bedrooms (one with twin beds, two with queen-size doubles) and a bathroom. Next door, a newer 2-bedroom wing with air-conditioning is a possible alternative for a couple or small group at certain times of year.

Indeed, there are various options when renting La Closerie, depending on the time of year and number of guests. Outside the high season, a 4-person rate is possible in which case you could choose to stay in the newer 2-bedroom wing with a pretty living area, a ground-floor twin and shower room alongside a spacious upstairs bedroom with queen-size double and modern bathroom. With good heating, this option may be especially cosy in the cooler months. Alternatively, you could opt for the original 3-bedroom house as part of this lower rate.

For larger groups however, the 8-person rate includes the original part of the house alongside the upstairs air-conditioned bedroom in the newer wing (in this case the newer wing's downstairs is closed).

Outside, soak up the summer sun on the loungers by the swimming pool (that can be heated for a supplement) and dine al-fresco on the stone terrace looking over the vast gardens. Younger guests will also adore the indoor games in the older house as well as the play area in the garden.

Set off on a hike - there’s no shortage of beautiful paths here on the edge of the rural village of Grèzes. In nearby Terrasson-Lavilledieu, around 7km away, you’ll find the Gardens of the Imagination - a beautiful 13-part landscape installment presenting mankind’s transition from nature to city life. Also convenient to Terrasson are restaurants, cafes, a cinema, and supermarket.

Further afield, a day trip to Périgueux is worth your while. This medieval town hosts a daily market where you’ll find the delicacies of the Dordogne, most notably foie gras and truffles. Even closer, if you fly in through Brive-la-Gaillarde, stay a while! The locals exude "Gaillarde" - lusty, robust good humour.

The Dordogne area of France is one of the most beautiful and one of the most popular. It has lovely countryside interspersed with medieval, bastide towns where fairytale châteaux rise from the morning mist - it is also a great region for food lovers: all the Perigordian specialities such as foie gras, confit d'oie, canard and mushrooms of all types are in abundance.

There is nothing more one could wish for as the local area offers everything: stunning walks, medieval towns, superb restaurants, an abundance of beautiful countryside and weekly markets in local villages and towns.

La Closerie enjoys a strategic location on top a hill in the outskirts of the small rural village of Grèzes in the northern Dordogne, close to the Corrèze border. The old town of Terrasson-Lavilledieu (7km) is lovely, with a large church, caves and Les Jardins de l'imaginaire: this is a large garden on the heights of Terrasson. The centre boasts many wonderful restaurants offering local delicacies and artisan shops selling hand crafted jewellery and glassware.

Surrounding villages that you must visit to explore the local area include Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (33km), Saint-Amand-de-Coly (18km) and Saint-Geniès (26km) with its market on Sunday morning. Similarly, the Lascaux caves are an unmissable day out, there are also the Tourtoirac caves (50km) and there are the Rouffignac caves (57km).

The region also boasts a selection of magnificent châteaux including Château de Hautefort (45km), Château de Castelnaud (51km), Château de Sauveboeuf (18km) and Château de Losse (28km). Meanwhile, recommended market towns and cities include Sarlat-la-Canéd (35km), Périgueux (68km) and Brive-la-Gaillarde (22km).

A number of airports are located within a reasonable driving distance: Brive (20km), Bergerac (101km) and Limoges airport (118km).

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with famous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

La Closerie welcomes families – amenities include a cot and highchair as well as board games, table tennis (in the original house), boules and a charming children’s play area outside. There is also plenty to keep all ages entertained across this part of the Dordogne region.

In nearby Terrasson-Lavilledieu, little explorers will love the Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire, a stunning botanical garden filled with winding paths, water features, and interactive spaces that spark curiosity.

A short drive away, the Lascaux Caves offer a fascinating journey back in time, with mesmerising prehistoric cave paintings brought to life through immersive exhibitions – perfect for young minds eager to learn and discover.

Meanwhile, the Vézère River provides endless opportunities for outdoor fun, from gentle canoeing and paddleboarding to scenic riverside picnics, especially close to the riverside town of Montignac. Families may also enjoy a trip to the tree-top trails of Accrobranche L'Appel de la Forêt, around half an hour by car.

For a day of hands-on excitement, head to Le Parc du Bournat in Le Bugue, a unique living museum where families can experience traditional Dordogne life, complete with vintage fairground rides, artisan workshops, and farm animals to meet. Perhaps combine with a trip to Le Bugue’s Aquarium Périgord Noir and other family-friendly attractions by the banks of the Vézère.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
We have owned the property for 4 years now.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The location - close to the nice city of Terrasson Lavilledieu, the quiet rural environment of Grèzes , the quality and authenticity of the building - reconstructed/adapted with the same techniques (stone walls and tiles) as the original construction from 1759. The private garden with, the swimming pool and the stunning view. The swimming pool with the pool cover and heating can be enjoyed from early May until the end of October (25°C).

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
Surely, I tried to understand more of the previous owner. The old lady living here until the 80’s was well perceived and the neighbours have a positive feeling about the house.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Enjoy the peacefullness of the garden/house/pool, visit the numerous historical landmarks and castles Hautefort, Beynac, etc..

Really eat?
Duck, foie gras, truffle du périgord, enjoy the wines of the area, go to the market.

Really see?
Visit the old Terrasson-and plan some lunch there, go down the river Vézère in canoe, visit Montignac, Sarlat, Brive.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?

In July August go to one of the ‘marché des producteurs’ in the evening for dinner.
Also go and admire the village of Saint-Genies and the ‘toits de lauzes’ ( Roof made of flat stones) Possibly on a Sunday morning at the market.

Wonderful stay in such a beautiful home.
View across the valley simply breathtaking and we enjoyed watching the sunrise; so tranquil and picturesque. We had the most amazing rainbow.
    We all enjoyed the pool
Days out to Terrasson, G. de Padurac, Brive, Viaduc de Millau (about 3 hours drive, but an incredible feat of engineering and equally impressive from the valley below). We also visited the tragic village of Oradour-sur-Glane which no words can describe.
Enjoyed a brief chat with the lonely lady next door.
Such a stunning part of France.

  • A fantastic holiday at this beautiful house

We had a fantastic holiday at this beautiful house. We loved the location, the views, the space, the pool!
We enjoyed exploring the Dordogne and found it very easy to get to Sarlat, Terrasson, Bergerac, Brive and Brantome.
Would highly recommend canoeing down the Dordogne River at Baynac (Butterfly Canoes) and Aquaparc du Coucou, in Hautefort for family fun.
Overall we had a fantastic time at this perfect place!

  • Perfect holiday home

  • A lovely week

    on 22/07/2023

What a lovely week we have had at La Closerie. We have been blessed with sunny weather so have obviously spent lots of time in and by the pool - what a fabulous view.
    Would recommend...
    - Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire in Terrasson - stunning, shady, surprising and the kids loved running through the water fountains.
    - The market in Terasson on Thursday morning. Busy & bustling. Great range of clothes and food stalls. Enjoyed a drink and snack at 'Banana's Kafe'.
    - Canoeing on the Dordogne - we went with Canoe Detente but loads to choose from. Busy but lovely spotting chateaux and herons.

We really enjoyed our stay: it was in a practical destination, comfy, cosy, and a sanctuary for when it rained, though the pool was thoroughly enjoyed when it was warmer due to the refreshing temperature. The stunning, picturesque view of the idyllic vegetation was breath-taking. Thank you for the generously provided champagne. We have LOVED experiencing a unique segment of worldwide culture.

  • A splendid, relaxing holiday

    on 01/08/2019

This holiday has been a splendid way to relax. Spending time in the pool has been perfect for chilling out and cooling down on these boiling summer days. I rather recommend visiting Terrason - it is a beautiful town, not far from here, and the bridge lit up at night is a stunning sight to behold. On a rainy day it was an interesting experience to visit the Barvetti chocolate factory! So enjoyed this lovely holiday and I hope whoever is reading this enjoys their time here as much as me and my family did.

We have spent a lovely week here, enjoying the idyllic location. The swimming pool with its views is fantastic. Close to lots of lovely places to visit. We will definitely be returning.

  • If only the weather was as good as the Cottage

    on 26/09/2017

The cottage was comfortable and well equipped - the pool was covered and heated so possible to use in bad weather - unfortunately we had quite a bit of rain. The owner was responsive to queries and thoughtful - arranged to have the pool heating turned up and clean sheets and towels for our second week - which should be a given but often isn't. There was a lot to see and do in the area. Shame that we couldn't make more use of the BBQ and the terrace.

We have found the house very comfortable and it was a great to have access to the heated pool. There is lots to see in the area, so we’ve enjoyed Terrasson, Sarlat, Perigueux, Brive, Montagnac and Hautefort as well as some some gerogeous gardens.

  • Great Stay

    on 17/07/2017

We very much appreciated the tranquillity, wonderful pool & view! We sat out until 11pm just to enjoy our surroundings and relax. We hope to return, as there’s lots to do.

  • Wir kommen wieder

    on 03/10/2016

  • A gorgeous farmhouse in a spectacular position

    on 03/10/2016

This lovely, clean, large and cool farmhouse is in a spectacular position overlooking green fields and far off villages. From the pool it feels like you can see forever! We stayed for 5 weeks and felt so at home that we didn't want to leave. The kitchen is fully equipped for your own French home cooking (!) but the restaurants in nearby Terrasson are fab too. We loved how we really felt we had privacy and the feeling of getting away from it all, while also being only 10 mins from shops and 4 supermarkets!! Our children loved the pool and outdoor space, and our family meals out on the terrace, looking out over the hills, will be remembered for a long time. Thank you Jean and Cecile for sharing your gorgeous house with us! Talia and family, New Zealand.

  • Si le Périgord vous tente, vous savez désormais où vous héberger !

    on 29/09/2016

(Alexandre, Bruxelles).

  • We could not have been more delighted

    on 10/08/2016

Our stay at Les Charmes de Grèzes was wonderful. The location, the property, the view and of course the wonderful pool. We could not have been more delighted. The space of the house was large although truthfully we spent all of our time either outside on the terrace or in the warm pool! Highly recommend this great place for a great holiday. The surroundings are of course superb... Scenic, culinary and with activities for all ages.

  • Five wonderful weeks!

    on 05/08/2016

We have spent 5 wonderful weeks and have done a lot of exploring (Sarlat, canoeing on the Dordogne, fireworks at Terrasson for the Bastille Day, Jardins de Marqueyssac etc. ) and a lot of swimming. We have loved the space in the house, had everything we needed to cook and be comfortable, It feels like home now and we are sad to leave! Thank you Jean and Cecile for the use of your beautiful house, it has really made our French experience!

  • A lovely holiday

    on 19/09/2015

Lovely, relaxing holiday, beautiful countryside, lots to do. Chateau Musee de Sauveboeuf particularly worth a visit. Look forward to coming back again.

  • Traditional house in a fantastic position

    on 16/09/2015

Comfortable traditional Perigord house in very quiet location. Helpful owners. Great pool (with a sliding roof) with views across the hills to the Massif Central. Lots to do in the area - would particularly recommend Chateau de Sauveboeuf which has the most amazing museum of prehistoric artifacts. Nearby Terrasson is beautiful and has everything needed including good restraurants and market. We had a wonderful time and very much enjoyed the comfortable house and lovely garden. The pool was fantastic and we loved the fact that the cover ensured that it was always beautifully warm.
