Overview

Pool Villa/House Laptop Friendly Workspace Parking Space

Experience the charm of the Dordogne at La Retraite, a delightful holiday home that effortlessly combines historic character and contemporary style in a superb setting just a short drive from the Dordogne river.

This old stone maison has been wonderfully renovated with so much of its original character from the beautiful floors and grand fireplace to the wood-beamed ceilings and exposed stone. Such features juxtapose perfectly with contemporary interiors, a sleek modern kitchen and discerning artwork across the home.

There are six comfortable bedrooms, many of them en suite including the master bedroom with its sunken bath and separate shower. Guests also benefit from a handsome piano in the living room and a court for tranquil games of pétanque outside.

As you rest on the sun-loungers by the inviting swimming pool, the views of the surrounding countryside are simply superb. Discover more landscapes of the Dordogne as you drive to the local village with its boulangerie, restaurants, weekly market and UNESCO World Heritage abbey, only 3km away.

A little further is the meandering Dordogne river where you can admire grand châteaux, visit idyllic villages and partake in canoeing, kayaking, boating, picnicking and strolling. Spend time in exquisite places such as Sarlat and Bergerac or explore historic bastide towns including Monpazier, one of France’s 'Plus Beaux Villages'.

Set in a very small hamlet, just a 5-minute drive from a local village and a little further to the Dordogne river, La Retraite enjoys a superb position in the heart of this charming region, less than an hour from Bergerac Airport.

Drive around 3km to the local village with its boulangerie and a couple of restaurants/cafes. Visit its 12th century abbey and cloister, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore the flower-filled lanes, coming across delightful little shops and studios. There is a great market on a Wednesday morning.

Le Buisson de Cadouin (8km) is home to further amenities and restaurants and just north of the town is a great spot to hire canoes or kayaks along the Dordogne river. Limeuil (13km) is another idyllic village, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, where the Dordogne and Vézère rivers meet, whilst Trémolat (13km) is home to a Michelin starred restaurant.

There are so many other Dordogne villages to spend time in including Saint-Cyprien and its belltower, the riverside villages of La Roque-Gageac and Domme as well as some of the mighty castles such as Château des Milandes, Château de Beynac and, a little further, Château de Fénelon.

Spend the morning discovering the wonderful markets of Sarlat-la-Canéda (44km), followed by an exquisite lunch in one of the fine restaurants of this gastronomic town whilst wine-lovers will want to head to Bergerac (35km) with its historic centre and surrounding vineyards.

Issigeac (25km) is another market village not to be missed on a Sunday morning whilst nearby Monpazier (19km) is beautiful and also one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

The wondrous Vézère valley is also within easy reach – the famous town of Les Eyzies is just half an hour away, home to the Musée National de Préhistoire. Le Bugue is an attractive market town with plenty to keep children entertained, not just canoeing along the Vézère river but also all sorts of family friendly theme parks and attractions near the town.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with famous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Best Suited For: All Ages

It’s great being only 3km from a local village with a bakery for those all-important morning pastries for all the family as well as a couple of restaurants, a delightful weekly market and a famous abbey which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Around a 10-minute drive away is the Dordogne and a superb spot for hiring canoes and kayaks for relaxing days out on the river. There are also many lovely areas for idyllic picnics and family strolls with wonderful river views.

North of the Dordogne, around half an hour away, is Le Bugue with a number of family-friendly attractions in and around the town including the Aquarium du Perigord Nord, canoeing along the Vézère river and a number of other theme parks. Parc Le Bournat is especially charming – a place where you can experience life in the early 1900s whilst a little further away Jacquou Parc has all sorts of rides and water-based activities.
