Perched on a hill among the vineyards, this villa in the Dordogne will excite travellers looking to commune with the region’s terroir. The sloping garden overlooks the rolling green countryside of Saint Antoine de Breuilh, a tiny hamlet with enormous charms. Inside the villa, you’ll love the simple, homey feel: the rough-hewn walls, tile and wood floors, and original exposed beams have warmth and classic holiday villa character.

Indeed, outdoor activities aren't hard to come by here - lovers of hiking, horseback riding, tennis, and golf will all find their passion in the surrounding area.

St. Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive away. Try renowned local wines and explore shops and bakeries on cobbled medieval streets. You’ll also find plenty of outdoor adventures like ballooning, canoeing on the Dordogne and golf close by, or you can tour medieval chateaux and learn the region’s history.

Wine is everything in this region. Follow the nearby Dordogne river 30 km east to Bergerac, where you’ll find both your local airport and the Maison des vins de Bergerac - a museum where you can learn all about the appellation. Put your newfound knowledge to use at the dozens of wineries surrounding the city. You’re also spitting distance from the famous Bordeaux region. A little more than an hour's drive will take you to Bordeaux (the city), where you can launch another unforgettable wine tour.

Without any shadow of doubt, the department of Dordogne is one of the most charming destinations in Aquitaine and perhaps, in the whole South of France.

Laurel Rose enjoys an excellent location in the outskirts of the small hillside village of Saint Antoine de Breuilh, surrounded by vineyards and forests and bordered by the Dordogne river.

The city of Bergerac, with its international airport, can be easily reached in about 40 minutes. A visit to the old town standing out for its medieval architecture, narrow streets full of local boutiques and good restaurant, is highly recommended. Here, you will also find the unmissable Maisons de Vins and will have the opportunity to take a tour along the Route de Vins de Bergerac.

The whole region is a true haven for nature and sport lovers alike offering a wide array of outdoor activities, from horse-back riding, to tennis, mountain-biking, golfing and watersports, not to mention the number of hiking opportunities.

On top of it all, several local villages with lovely weekly markets, excellent restaurants and historical attractions are all located within a short driving distance.

Region

One of France’s most iconic hilltop towns, Saint-Émilion is waiting to enchant wine enthusiasts, gastronomes, keen historians and Francophiles in so many different ways. With its UNESCO World Heritage vineyards, visitors will have the opportunity to sample AOC wines from one of the most famous and historic wine-growing regions in the world.

Start off by exploring the cobbled lanes of Saint-Émilion as you admire its beautiful architecture and churches – its origins date back to the 8th century. One of the most impressive sites is the 12th century stone-carved Monolithic church, the largest of its kind in Europe, a truly astonishing masterpiece – a guided tour of the church and catacombs is a must.

As well as the town’s famous Merlot, try Crémant de Bordeaux at Les Cordeliers, once a monastery that was brought by a winemaker in the 19th century – enjoy a glass of sparkling wine overlooking the cloister garden. Food lovers note there are several excellent restaurants including Michelin star establishments (Logis de la Cadène and La Table de Pavie are two famous names). Look out for French macarons as well - Saint-Émilion claims to be the birthplace of this delicious sweet treat.

Of course, wine tours and tastings can be arranged across the Saint-Émilion wine-growing region. There are so many to choose from, from small family-run vineyards to prestigious wine châteaux, and it’s fantastic to be able to buy such excellent wines directly from local producers. Wine connoisseurs note that the neighbouring Pomerol wine appellation should also be included on your itinerary for longer stays.

Meanwhile, explore the idyllic landscapes by bike, a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of Saint-Émilion’s vineyards, or enjoy a hot-air balloon ride to capture the scenery below. A little further afield, canoe or kayak along the Dordogne near Castillon-la-Bataille, experience the vibrant markets of Libourne and travel to the great wine city of Bordeaux for another amazing day out in this captivating part of southwestern France.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Little history lovers will love exploring the underground catacombs in Saint-Émilion, only 27km away, or just admiring the incredible architecture across this historic village. Impress them with a tour in a Tuk-Tuk or even a prestige motor vehicle!

Teens may also appreciate the many activities available across the region such as canoeing on the nearby Dordogne river and horse-riding, walking or cycling across enchanting landscapes.

Visit some great lakes in the area such as Lac des Dagueys, 40km away, with its summer inflatable water park and also at Blasimon,17km away, where there are outdoor sports, fishing, swimming during certain periods in the summer as well as gentle walks in picturesque surroundings.

Bergerac (30km) is also home to a waterpark, a go-karting track, a cinema and the charming Port Miniature where you will find mini-boats to ride on a little lake. Just north of the town is a popular tree-top adventure park, AccroZarbres, with a range of activities for various ages.

Then of course there is the great city of Bordeaux, on the banks of the Garonne, just over an hour away, with its magnificent buildings (look out for the summer splash fountains at the Miroir d’Eau) and brilliant museums (including Cap Sciences and the Natural History Museum). Tired legs can tour the city via the little road train that takes you past some of the city’s major sights.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property for?
Since 1990.

What was it about the property that you most fell in love with?

The calm, the seclusion, not having any neighbours, the surrounding vineyards, the comfort and the layout of the house.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

During the restoration of the house, we were surprised when we knocked down one of the walls, we discovered an old sink which we have kept. Also, the outside walls have some more exposed stones which stand out, the explanation is that when the original builders stopped for a break, they would mark the spot with an indicator stone which they simply built around when they resumed work.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?

A journalist from RTL.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Visit the local markets. There are lots of sporting activities nearby including tennis, horse riding, canoeing, hiking and golf.

Really see?
The town of St Emilion, Duras, Monbazillac, Bergerac, the tower of Montaigne, the vineyards of Montravel and the surrounding caves. Also, a little further is Sarlat, Bordeaux and Arcachon.

Really eat?
All products with fattened duck! Confits, magrets and foie gras. Try out the local restaurants and drink the owner's wine!

  • LOVED IT!!

    on 18/09/2024

This gite is fab! Everything you could want on a relaxing holiday in a beautiful area. The host was great, very welcoming - fresh home grown tomatoes, home made jams and a sample of her wine were waiting for us on arrival, a lovely touch!
Having the pool was great, big enough to swim or play in. The whole garden is secluded and a real sun trap. Comfy beds, well equipped kitchen.. couldn't have asked for more!
It's in a good location for exploring the area by car (v little within walking distance which wasn't an issue for us but maybe worth noting)
    Would thoroughly recommend!

Quiet location, well maintained property with a lovely pool and scenery and an accommodating host.

  • Great holiday in France!

    on 07/09/2019

We had a lovely time in a lovely villa. The only downside for me was the steps to the pool and eating areas as I struggle with walking. There were no hand rails in the showers which was also quite difficult. Other than that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely villa.

  • Fantastic holiday

Fantastic host. Fantastic spot. Whoever found this place deserves a medal.

  • Wonderful Holiday!

    on 16/07/2018

I can only rate the property and people as the very best, together with location of course. We actually returned and moved house the very next day so it is a little hectic! I will be booking again! Thank you though for a thoroughly amazing service throughout.

  • We recommend!

    on 02/06/2018

This is unquestionably a lovely house in a beautiful little spot overlooking fields and forest. There are neighbours - the owners are in the chateau just down the lane - but the setting is peaceful and tranquil. The bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped - the pool, lovely. Overall, a great place and wouldn't hesitate to recommend!
