Enjoy the beauty of two gardens at Le Chai, a holiday rental house in the Dordogne. The large 19th century home sits within 7.5 acres of private grounds, including a picturesque landscaped garden for relaxation and another designed around a large swimming pool (15x7m), with a lawn for outdoor activities such as badminton, table tennis, cricket and a giant chessboard.
Inside, this traditional home features high ceilings, beautiful hardwood floors, antique furnishings and characterful decor. With 2 charming living rooms and a dining room for 12 with a large window for fresh air, it feels like an authentic old French home where you can all gather in pretty surroundings. The 6 bedrooms, some with exposed wooden beams, sleep 12, and there are 4 modernised bathrooms. The region is known for its Perigord cuisine—like truffles—and Bergerac appellation wines. Le Chai is a short drive from Monbazillac and Pecharmant vineyards, 2 of the most famous AOCs. The countryside is also dotted with fortified hilltop towns where you can explore the past, such as the medieval castle at Hautefort.
Close to the village of Mouleydier (7km) and Lalinde (9km), Le Chai is only 10 minutes from the Bergerac airport.

Location
About the surrounding area of Le ChaiThere is a village you can walk to however it does not have any shops or a boulangerie. There is however a great kids playground in the village that will appeal to younger guests. The nearest bakery is in Mouleydier (7km).
Medieval Lalinde is just 9km away, a pretty market town on the Dordogne river where you will find shops, restaurants and a supermarket. The market takes place on a Thursday morning and there's a lovely atmosphere as locals come out to buy lots of fresh, good quality produce.
Vineyards and fortified towns are the highlights of the “Périgord Pourpre”. The house sits in the heart of Monbazillac and Pécharmant – the two most famous vineyards among 13 other “AOCs” - just 15 minutes from the city of Bergerac.
The old town of Bergerac (15km) has kept its architectural heritage from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries that can be seen in the half-timbered houses. It is the starting point to discover the vineyards and castles of the region.
Fortified towns such as Beaumont, Eymet, Issigeac, Molières and Monpazier, among others, testify to the history of the Périgord, especially the rivalry with England that started in the 12th century.

Region
Experience the magnificence of the Dordogne River whilst staying close to Bergerac, a historic town with a fine reputation for its wine, gastronomy, history and art. What’s more, Bergerac is easily accessible with its own international airport and it is just over an hour from Bordeaux with TGV connections to Paris.
In the Périgord Pourpre and wonderfully located for reaching the Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde regions of south-western France, Bergerac is classified as a city of art and history. A stroll around Bergerac’s old town will be high on your itinerary – explore medieval cobbled lanes as you admire half-timbered houses, pretty squares as well as inviting shops and restaurants as you follow the fictional footsteps of Cyrano de Bergerac. On a Wednesday and Saturday morning, don’t miss the delightful market near the handsome Notre-Dame de Bergerac.
Sail along the Dordogne from Bergerac on board a traditional gabarre vessel or take a walk by the river’s edge before finding an idyllic spot for a picnic. Cycling enthusiasts will adore the voie verte from the Canal de Lalinde towards Mouleydier, Creysse and Bergerac, partly following the banks of the river. There are of course ample opportunities for canoeing along the Dordogne or hiking through the Périgord Pourpre’s forests, orchards and vineyards - the region’s natural beauty will captivate you with its mild climate and idyllic riverside scenery.
Wine lovers should visit the Château de Monbazillac, just south of Bergerac, or spend time sampling other wine appellations at vineyards and wine châteaux near the likes of Montravel, Pineuilh and Saussignac. Back to the charming town centre, taste a range of excellent wine at Bergerac’s Maison des Vins by the old harbour.
Beyond Bergerac, there are so many pretty places to discover. To the south-east is picture-perfect Issigeac and the bastide town of Beaumont-du-Périgord, both hosting enchanting weekly markets. Market lovers will also adore Sainte-Foy-la-Grande by the banks of the Dordogne, home to one of the Gironde’s most beautiful markets on a Saturday morning.

Great place for a relaxing week in the sun
We had a thoroughly relaxing week at Le Chai lounging by the pool and visiting the nearby villages and restaurants. The house is large and rustic, the grounds big and the swimming pool is a proper size. We left at the end of the week very contented...

Wonderful Property!
A home away from home, Le Chai exceeded all of our expectations. The decor is rustic, the location is rural and the pool makes the perfect escape on hot days. The owner was also a pleasure to chat too, always a bonus!

Charming, historical villa
Le Chai is a charming family-owned house with so much history, set in a tiny village near the Dordogne river. Everything in the house is very antique, and it truly is like stepping back in time. The view from the front-facing bedrooms was beautiful to wake up to each morning. The pool is huge and you could spend all day lolling here next to the giant chess board. The owners were so lovely and welcoming and have a great welcome book with plenty of great local tips. The location is also great to explore all the beautiful wineries nearby such as Chateau Monbazillac to try the famous sweet wine. We also loved Maison Vari a cute winery cafe for lunch in Monbazillac village and also I would highly recommend a visit to the quaint village of Issigeac they have a wonderful market on Sundays.

A Nice Escape!
I really loved how staying at Le Chai was like stepping back in time. The chateau was so charming and the grounds and village were really peaceful. We were definitely able to relax and enjoy the countryside. Coming back to the swimming pool after going out and exploring the area was just a dream. I’d love to do it all again!
