Le Prieure Esperance Estate is a fabulous secluded hamlet sitting close to the Dordogne river, only 20km from the historic town of Sarlat-la-Canéda.
Offering unspoilt views of the stunning Perigord countryside, the estate comprises of two main villas, both with private swimming pools and enclosed gardens, and a charming cottage. Guests can breakfast under the rising sun on their own private terrace before taking a morning dip in the large heated pools, or strolling amongst the lovingly manicured gardens.
Le Prieure Esperance (8 guests) has been neatly restored inside and out to create an overall atmosphere of warmth and peace. The subtle mix of medieval and oriental inspired soft furnishings and exposed original oak beams and stonework give the interior a unique, yet homely feel that instantly puts visitors at ease. The grand stone fireplace only adds to this effect, as the centre piece of a large modern dining room. All spacious bedrooms are complete with flawless en-suite bathroom facilities.
Maison Esperance (10 guests) is a beautifully renovated stone house. The style of the property is a perfect blend between the modern design of our times and the refinement of a country house. It is surrounded by a charming enclosed walled garden and throughout the day, whether poolside or on one of the terraces, it is impossible not to appreciate the sun, light and serenity of each moment. There is a heated swimming pool with sunloungers and parasols, as well as a covered dining area.
Finally, Cottage Esperance (2 guests) offers a charming place to rest at night and enjoy the most wonderful Dordogne valley views from the bedroom's bow window.
The estate also boasts a private 17th Century chapel which is now used as a non-religious multi-functional space. It is heated/air-conditioned and has a "HK Lucas Performer" music system (compatible with media devices, I-phone etc) which allows guests to enjoy their choice of music in high definition and with excellent acoustics.
This is a holiday rental that oozes sophisticated luxury, from the silver dining cutlery to the un-chlorinated salt-water pool, yet maintains a quaint rustic charm that is in line with that of the entire Dordogne region.
If you'd rather relax and fully enjoy a catered evening, two wonderful private chefs are at your disposal as well as a waitress service.
You can even choose whether to eat in the chateau, chapel or al-fresco! Enjoy your meal while you settle into this unique venue and start to immerse yourselves into the charming French lifestyle!

Region
One of France’s most visited destinations, Sarlat-la-Canéda is a beautiful medieval town with a superb reputation for its gastronomy. Staying near Sarlat allows you to experience the town’s rich heritage alongside its fine cuisine, whilst also being close to idyllic villages and natural scenery of the Périgord Noir, never far from the meandering Dordogne River.
Exquisitely restored, explore the old town with its warren of winding lanes with inviting shops, restaurants and characterful cafes. Take a guided tour to truly appreciate Sarlat’s rich history dating back to medieval and Renaissance times – the small yet attractive Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, once a Benedictine abbey, is one of the main highlights of the town.
Spend time learning all about the region’s gastronomy, best experienced at the traditional outdoor market on a Saturday or Wednesday morning. Local specialities are of course served in Sarlat’s many excellent restaurants or bought in little shops across the town – look out for foie-gras, truffles, honey, chestnuts and walnuts. There is also an organic market on Thursday afternoons and a charming covered market near the cathedral.
If staying in the height of the summer, join in one of the region’s marchés nocturnes in nearby villages where you can enjoy local food amongst locals accompanied by good wine and music.
Elsewhere, visit the grand châteaux of the Dordogne (Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac are both less than half an hour away from Sarlat), stroll around elegant gardens (Les Jardins de Marqueyssac by candlelight is especially atmospheric) and visit picture-perfect riverside villages such as La Roque-Gageac and Domme, both classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Heading north instead, the famous caves of Lascaux are also within easy reach.
Hot air balloon rides are a great way to admire the landscapes of the Périgord Noir or simply canoe along the Dordogne River in glorious surroundings. There are of course wonderful walks, tree-top adventure centres and fantastic cycling routes including the 29km-long voie verte stretching from Sarlat to Cazoulès following a former railway line passing magnificent Dordogne countryside.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesLocated in the land of ‘1001 chateaux’ and a short distance from the banks of the Dordogne, there is so much to keep families entertained across the Périgord Noir.
Just one of the many castles to visit includes nearby Château de Fénelon as well as other iconic sites a little further afield such as Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac, both within a 30 to 40-minute drive.
There are so many glorious walking opportunities including a path that passes right by the estate, and cycling is also a popular pursuit. Hire bikes and come across a great voie verte on the other side of the river partly following a former railway line between Sarlat-la-Canéda and Souillac.
Find tree-top adventures, via ferrata and paintballing at nearby La Forêt des Écureuils and its neighbouring accrobranche centre, I Feel Wood, both around 14km away, whilst animal lovers may enjoy a walk through the hilly trails of the Réserve Zoologique de Calviac looking out for animals from across the world.
There are plenty of seasonal canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Dordogne River as well as picturesque riverside beaches for picnics and perhaps even river swimming in the height of the summer. Boat trips along the Dordogne depart from La Roque-Gageac, just under half an hour away.

Beautiful and Charming
We just spent a week at Le Prieure Esperence for a family vacation and had a wonderful time. Everything was flawless from Marianne’s warm welcome to each lovely meal prepared by Sharon. It is a beautiful property where the charm of a traditional Perigord’s stone house meets modern comfort (high end kitchen appliances, cable TV, Wi-fi) and tasteful decoration. The property oversees the Dordogne valley and is just across the Chateau de Fenelon, conveniently located within 30 minutes of most touristic sites. Everything you need is already available on the property and all you need is to pack your clothes (including a swimsuit). For guests traveling with younger kids, the host even had everything ready for my 2 year old daughter (baby tableware, high chair, toys, playard etc.). Traveling from overseas, trust me this was greatly appreciated. Not only the place is spectacular but what makes it even better is the service and attention to details one receive when staying here. Caroline and Marianne will ensure you have everything you need and are available anytime to make restaurants or places to visit recommendations (and even reservations if you need to). We will definitely recommend Le Prieure Esperance to our friends and family members and hope to be back one day. This is the perfect place for a family get-together or a business seminar (you could even book the 2 other properties next door if you had to accommodate a larger party). Thanks again for everything, we had a wonderful time.
