With beautiful views of the Dordogne valley, this 16th century residence is now a fine family home in the very heart of the Périgord Noir just a 5-minute drive from the banks of the Dordogne River.

Embrace the character of this 5-bedroom stone manoir whilst making the most of its 21st century features after an extensive renovation. From the living room step out through the French windows and admire the glorious vistas from the long balcony. The sleek kitchen sits proudly by the exposed stone walls and an eclectic mix of antique and modern furnishings in the dining area. There is another lounge upstairs beneath the eaves with a Smart TV, DVDs, games and table football.

Each of the five bedrooms is air-conditioned and they all have an ensuite bath or shower room. Both bedrooms on the main floor (one with a king-size bed) lead out to the balcony whilst two further doubles and a twin can be found upstairs. Sleeping up to 10 guests, it feels like a spacious and welcoming home for your holiday in the Dordogne.

Gather beneath the huge linden tree for al-fresco feasts on the garden terrace or sit back by the outdoor lounge overlooking the idyllic landscapes around you. Follow the steps down to the decked swimming pool terrace with its shady pergola, bean bags, sofas and sun loungers.

This historic home is set on a hillside in a small rural hamlet just a few minutes drive north of the Dordogne River. Find canoeing, kayaking and a pretty riverside beach not far from Siorac-en-Périgord, a small village with restaurants and a supermarket. Medieval Saint-Cyprien is also a short drive away, a charming town with a delightful Sunday morning market and a marché nocturne in the height of the summer.

Where should you start exploring? There’s Domme, La Roque-Gageac and some of the Dordogne’s most iconic châteaux in one direction, then picturesque Limeuil, Trémolat and Bergerac in the other, not forgetting Sarlat-la-Canéda within half an hour. Discover wonderful walks, cycle routes and even hot-air balloon rides, all fantastic ways to appreciate the Périgord Noir scenery.

Furthermore, visit fascinating caves and pre-historic sites of the Vézère valley with Le Bugue and famous Les Eyzies both within 15km. Meanwhile to the south, head to bastide towns such as Monpazier and Belvès, classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ or venture to the picture-perfect village of Issigeac and its enchanting weekly market.

  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Kids

Best Suited For: Children
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Toddlers are not allowed to stay at Maison Apollinaire due to the terraced grounds with many steps and low walls with steep terraced levels below (babies in arms and older children are accepted. Two cots/highchairs can be requested).

That said, older children/teens will love the table-tennis and boules outside, the TV lounge with table football and board games as well as the glorious swimming pool.
Just over a 5-minute drive away, there is a canoeing and kayaking centre by the Dordogne River near Siorac-en-Périgord. Come across beautiful walks by the river and pretty riverside beaches such as Plage du Coux.

History lovers may appreciate a trip to the heritage museum by the river around 15 minutes away, Museum La Rue Du Temps Qui Passe. Of course, many of the Dordogne’s iconic chateaux are also within easy reach from Château des Milandes (17km) to Château de Beynac (16km) and beyond. Further along the river, enjoy river cruises on traditional gabarre vessels from the exquisite village of La Roque-Gageac (20km).

In the other direction, Le Bugue (12km) offers so many activities for families. This includes canoeing along the Vézère River, the Aquarium Périgord Noir, the old-fashioned theme park, Le Parc du Bournat, Le Big Bird trails and Jungle Golf. Across this part of the Dordogne you can also discover fascinating caves and pre-historic sites, especially close to Les Eyzies (15km).

Even closer to home, from early/mid-July Étangs du Bos offers mini-golf, waterslides, an inflatable water park, trampolines and a play area. As with all local attractions, check seasonal opening dates in advance.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
We bought the property in 2016.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Its amazing views across the valley and the space. We just knew it was the place for us and our family.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The house is 16th century and at the rear of the cellar we call the “bat cave” is another house with a mud floor dating back to the 14th century. No one really knows exactly what was beneath the house. If you look at the stone retaining walls there is evidence of doors and windows…

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they really...

Must do...
Canoeing on the river (take a picnic) and hot air ballooning
Must eat...
Buying fresh food from the local markets. Obviously duck! The restaurant 'Les Glycines' in Les Eyzies is impressive (Michelin Star)...
Must see...
All the beautiful châteaux

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Enjoy being at the house. Relax, eat and drink well under the shade of “Tilleul” tree

  • Huge success

    on 24/11/2023

We really enjoyed our stay, the house is so comfortable and the views from everywhere are stunning. The kitchen as the hub of the house linked to the terrace is lovely and made our holiday a huge success.

  • Magical time with lots to do locally

    on 08/09/2023

We were not disappointed; the house was well equipped and beautifully furnished – not the usual minimum holiday home. Plenty of space for family members to spread out and the balcony was our favourite spot. Our family and friends had a magical time with lots to do locally then home for the pool and the great views. We loved every minute.

  • Wow, what an amazing place
