Great Value
Ideal for Kids

This traditional Périgord house with its heated swimming pool is set in the picturesque countryside just a 10-minute drive from the banks of the Dordogne river and medieval Saint-Cyprien.

As you approach 5-bedroom Maison Ariadne admire its historic façade, characterful shutters and steep tiled roof so typical of the Périgord Noir. Soak up the house’s heritage as you step through to its spacious interiors – this welcoming family home is old-fashioned in style with an ambience of warmth and rustic charm.

Styled with an eclectic blend of furnishings, some sourced from nearby flea markets, discover the wood-beamed lounge and dining area alongside a pretty kitchen equipped with modern appliances alongside its impressive fireplace. Doors open out to the south terrace for idyllic al-fresco feasts on warm summer days and evenings.

Outside, embrace the serene surroundings as you dip in the heated swimming pool and laze on the sun loungers. For a change of scene, the banks of the Dordogne are just a 10-minute drive away. Enjoy walks, cycle rides, picnics, riverside beaches and canoeing and kayaking opportunities by the river.

Experience the historic charm of medieval Saint-Cyprien, 4.5km by car, especially on a Sunday morning when the bustling market showcases all sorts of culinary delights (look out for weekly summer evening markets too in July and August). Other wonderful villages and towns by the river include Limeuil, La Roque-Gageac and Domme, not forgetting the many iconic Dordogne châteaux.

The fine gastronomy and exquisite architecture of Sarlat-la-Canéda is just over a 20-minute drive away or venture a little further afield towards the handsome town of Bergerac, loved for its riverside setting, historic houses and Pays de Bergerac wine.

In a rural setting, Maison Ariadne is surrounded by the picturesque countryside of the Périgord Noir, around a 10-minute drive from the banks of the Dordogne and medieval Saint-Cyprien.

The two closest airports, Bergerac and Brive–Souillac Airport, are slightly less than an hour away by car whilst the nearest train station is just outside Saint-Cyprien (with arrivals from Bordeaux, Sarlat, Périgueux and Sarlat).

Saint-Cyprien (4.5km) is a picture-perfect village which sits on a hillside above the river – the narrow lanes lead to the very top where you can admire the most beautiful valley views. Potter around little shops and dine out in welcoming restaurants as well as soaking up the ambience of the delightful Sunday morning market which attracts visitors from across the region. In the height of the summer look out for the marché gourmand that takes place weekly in the evening, a fantastic way to appreciate yet more delicious cuisine of the Périgord Noir accompanied by local wine.

The exquisite town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (21km) is a fine day out, especially for gastronomes who will adore the many restaurants, shops and markets. Further iconic destinations in the Dordogne include Domme (25km) and La Roque-Gageac (19km), both gorgeous riverside villages, alongside some of the region’s famous châteaux - both Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac are within a 20-minute drive.

Heading west along the Dordogne River, paddle by the shores in Limeuil where the Dordogne and Vézère rivers meet, or venture further towards the handsome town of Bergerac (53km), loved for its historic architecture, riverside setting and wines.
Other market villages and towns that are worthy of your time are Issigeac (46km) with its charming Sunday morning market, and the bastide towns of Monpazier (33km) and Monflanquin (55km), both classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

Slightly closer to home, discover the fascinating caves and pre-historic sites of the Vézère valley whether visiting the village of Les Eyzies (10km) or making the most of the canoeing/kayaking and family attractions around Le Bugue (10km).

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

Families staying here will appreciate the sense of space both inside and out and enjoy playing the odd game of table tennis in the play area.

The banks of the Dordogne are just a 10-minute drive away. Continue on to Siorac-en-Périgord for seasonal canoeing/kayaking and come across lovely walks, pretty riverside beaches and picnic spots. Boat trips are another great way to experience the beauty of the river – traditional  gabarre vessels depart the famous riverside village of La Roque-Gageac (19km).

There is a much-loved heritage museum around 10km by car, Museum La Rue Du Temps Qui Passe, that is popular with families. Young historians can also admire the many grand châteaux that the Dordogne is famous for such as Château de Beynac, Château des Milandes and many more.

Heading into the Vézère valley, known for its pre-historic caves and sites, there are plenty of family attractions in and around Le Bugue (10km). These include the charming theme park, Le Parc du Bournat, as well as Aquarium Périgord Noir, Junge Golf, Le Big Bird trails and canoeing/kayaking along the Vézère River.

If staying in the height of the summer, look out for mini-golf, waterslides, trampolines and an inflatable water park at nearby Étangs du Bos, about a 10-minute drive away (as always, check opening dates in advance).

Reviews

  • A beautiful property

    Created on 20/10/2022

A beautiful property with stunning views and a much needed swimming pool - the weather was warm... The house is very comfortable and there was plenty of room (and more) for all of us. Everything was ready for our stay and there is more than enough to do and see.
St. Cyprien is very close by with a wonderful Sunday market that is well worth a visit. Lucco is the BEST pastry shop! Other great places nearby including Beynac and La Roque-Gageac. Castles are fantastic (Beynac, Castelnaud, etc), as are the gardens and views of Marqueyssac. BOOK EARLY for an evening meal at the Belle Etoile in Beynac and go on a Gabarre trip. Canoeing on the Vezere from Les Eyzies was much calmer and more relaxing than the hustle and bustle on the Dordogne. Sarlat is great, as is the Gouffre de Padirac if you like to drive and don't worry about crowds... All in all a great place to stay.

  • Great house!

Great house 10 minutes from the Dordogne. Secluded location with swimming pool in a beautiful valley. For a family vacation with friends it worked perfectly.
