Discover the Vézère valley from this delightful modern villa with a private swimming pool near a traditional Dordogne village, a great base for visiting nearby Montignac-Lascaux and some of France’s most famous pre-historic sites.

Maison Iris is contemporary in style with its open-plan lounge, modern kitchen and dining area and sliding windows opening out to the light-filled garden with countryside views. All on one floor, two bedrooms feature a queen-size double bed and the third bedroom is a twin, making this modern abode perfect for a family, couple or small group of friends.

Sit beneath the pergola for breakfast on the terrace and enjoy al-fresco meals on summer evenings. The private pool is set in the garden, just right for cooling off and having fun, or you may prefer to laze back on the surrounding sun loungers.

This is a rural setting although not remote – a little village is just 1km away with an épicerie (village shop), bakery and café-bar whilst the picturesque riverside town of Montignac-Lascaux is only 11km by car. Visit Montignac’s charming weekly market or simply potter around its historic lanes admiring the beautiful houses by the river’s edge. As summer approaches, discover canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Vézère.

Other gorgeous villages nearby include Saint-Amand-de-Coly and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, whilst the pre-historic sites of Les Eyzies are around half an hour away.

Further afield, spend the day exploring historic Sarlat-la-Canéda or Périgueux, both famed for their fine Périgord cuisine and excellent markets, or dip your toes in the Dordogne on the riverside beach in Limeuil. Take boat trips along the Dordogne from La Roque-Gageac, appreciate the charm of Domme or stay closer to home and soak up the natural beauty of the Vézère near your inviting holiday home.

Maison Iris is located just outside a small Dordogne village a short drive north of Montignac-Lascaux and the Vézère River. Fly into Brive-Souillac Airport (50km) or the nearest train station is Condat-Le Lardin (8km) – if arriving via Paris change at Brive-la-Gaillarde.

A small traditional village is around 1km away by car or on foot (no pavement for the first part), home to a village shop, bakery and café-bar. Further amenities can be found in riverside Montignac-Lascaux (11km), famed for the Lascaux-International Centre for Cave Art just south of the town. The town itself is pretty with old houses by the river, lovely shops, restaurants and a picturesque weekly market. Discover seasonal canoeing/kayaking along the Vézère alongside other summer activities.

There are so many gorgeous villages to explore across this part of the Dordogne including Saint-Amand-de-Coly (17km), one of France’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, home to abbey ruins, a little tea shop and an atmospheric Tuesday evening market in the height of the summer. Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (20km) is another idyllic gem – explore its charming houses and riverside setting. A little further is Les Eyzies (33km), a must for history enthusiasts in the heart of the Vézère Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its pre-historic caves.

The exquisite town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (38km) is known for its gastronomic restaurants, markets and historic architecture – savour the town’s Périgord cuisine, especially foie gras and truffles. In the other direction is the city of Périgueux (50km), the capital of the Périgord region.

Discover the meandering beauty of the Dordogne River as you visit riverside villages such as Limeuil (48km) and Trémolat (56km). Other tourist destinations along the river include La Roque-Gageac, Domme and many iconic châteaux within an hours drive. Heading south-west instead, Bergerac (86km) is another wonderful day out with its medieval centre, markets, excellent restaurants and wines and boat trips along the Dordogne.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

In the Vézère valley, there are many pre-historic caves to visits and museums to explore nearby. What’s more, the Lascaux-International Centre for Cave Art is just over a 10-minute drive away. A little further south is Le Conquil, a fascinating troglodyte site and park with outdoor activities.

Discover canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Vézère River near Montignac-Lascaux or further south by the Dordogne River. Outdoor adventurists may also enjoy the tree-top trails at L'Appel de la Forêt near Thenon, just 10 minutes away by car, or at I Feel Wood near Sarlat, not far from Réserve Zoologique de Calviac.

Back to the Vézère valley, there are various family attractions in and around the riverside town of Le Bugue (44km) including the Aquarium Périgord Nord, Le Parc Bournat (and old-fashioned theme park), Jungle Golf and a ice-age themed maze. Slightly closer to home, combine a trip to pretty Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère with Parc aux Dinosaures, just over 20 minutes by car.

Reviews

  • An idyllic rural setting

    on 18/07/2024

A very relaxing time away in an idyllic rural setting with all the modern trappings of a luxurious break. Would highly recommend particularly if avoiding the crowds is on your checklist.

  • We definitely recommend

    on 20/10/2023

We certainly enjoyed the house. The first 3 days the weather was nice and we spent a lot of time in the garden and we were also able to swim twice. Unfortunately, it rained for the next few days, so I read books and watched movies indoors. House was pleasant, nice and modern and fully equipped. Location and garden also, and location easy to find. We felt comfortable. It was a great experience all around, with our dog child Harris, and we definitely recommend.

  • Wonderful holiday!

    on 12/08/2023

We really had a wonderful holiday, what a nice house with air conditioning and everything new. And a lovely swimming pool, which is a must with the heat wave. My compliments, and thank you again for the wonderful holiday!

  • Really nice, everything new

    on 10/07/2023
