Nestled in the idyllic countryside in the southwestern Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, Maison Monnier is an excellent base for exploring diverse natural landscapes and the area's rich culinary heritage.

The spacious holiday home is enveloped by land and greenery for as far as the eye can see and benefits from an unspoiled location.

Inside, guests can find cosy interiors and furnishings and a homey atmosphere to make their stay as comfortable as possible. On the ground floor, aspiring chefs will love whipping up tasty meals in the fully equipped kitchen, while the rest of the group can participate in socialising from the sitting area or watch the dinner being prepared directly from the island bar. A double bedroom is also located on this floor and has an en-suite bathroom to ensure privacy for couples. The rest of the bedrooms are on the first floor.

There are lovely interiors, spacious, unfenced gardens and a large private swimming pool enveloped by a terrace fabulous for lounging and watching the world go by. Children can play on the small playground, while adults can make the most of the barbecue and prepare tasty al-fresco meals in the gazebo. Alternatively, find a spot on the grass and spread out a blanket to enjoy some solitude. From here, you can watch the sun slip behind the horizon and wait for the stars to appear in the night sky.

To reach the nearest restaurant and supermarket, head to a number of surrounding villages, such as Salviac or Gourdon. With their weekly market, larger villages such as St. Julien de Lampon and Souillac are also within driving distance away.

The Dordogne River is also just a 15-minute drive away and is surrounded by pretty villages such as Domme, La Roque Gageac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. The area around the water banks is perfect for hiking, walking and foraging, while the river itself provides many opportunities.

Just across the river to the north, you can find Sarlat-la-Canéda – a medieval town with a beautiful central church and an indoor food market selling local delicacies and a bell tower.

The diverse region is a true haven for nature and outdoor lovers, offering activities such as horse riding, cycling, mountain biking, golf, fishing, and hiking.

Maison Monnier is located in southwestern France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, just a stone's throw away from the Dordogne River and many medieval villages. You can find the nearest restaurants and supermarkets in surrounding villages, such as Salviac, a 10-minute drive away and Gourdon, a 20-minute drive.

Gourdon is a small town with many interesting sights. Make sure to visit the castles of Butte du Château and Château de Gourdon, as well as Église Saint-Pierre - a wonderful 14th-century church with stained glass windows. Apart from all these landmarks, there’s also something for nature lovers in the Les Jardins de la Butte and Le Jardin de la Clède park.

Head towards the Dordogne River to explore all the fun activities this area offers. In the village of Domme, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, you can rent canoes and kayaks or participate in a group paddle-boarding session. Famous for its fortifications, it has a bustling marketplace Place de la Halle and plenty of winding streets for wandering around.

The Dordogne department also hosts a wealth of stunning villages and towns. Many are Plus Beaux Villages, such as Saint-Amand-de-Coly, with the famous Lascaux caves nearby or the 13th-century bastide village of Monpazier.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, the capital of the Perigord Noir, is one of the area’s most famous towns and features a maze of narrow medieval streets and charming squares. Regional specialities here include foie gras and the famous Perigordian truffle and crepes, walnuts, goat’s cheese and confits, which can all be tasted in the surrounding restaurants, delis and market stalls on the famous Saturday market.

When you're hoping to escape the heat in the summer months, find some shade beneath the trees in the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park. Only a 40-minute drive separates you from a fantastic hiking, boating and camping destination, where you can find caves among craggy limestone plateaus alongside murmuring rivers and quaint villages like Rocamadour.

Alternatively, you can cool down on the Plage de Groléjac, which frames a small lake, La Mouline. A lush forest with marshes, streams and walking paths great for wildlife spotting envelops this sandy spot.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

The area around the Dordogne River and its surrounding landscape offers many activities for families with children, regardless of age or hobbies.

You’ll discover many walking and hiking trails outside the front door, ideal for wholesome strolls through the pine forest-carpeted hills and valleys. Nearby, Tour de Moncalou is a scenic point offering picturesque countryside views, with a well-laid-out picnic area and a café nearby.

Alternatively, you can visit Souillac's toy museum Musée de l'Automate, less than a 45-minute drive away, or spend the day at Quercyland, a waterpark with plenty of slides and activities for little ones.

There are picture postcard villages dotted along the Dordogne river where you can hire canoes to paddle in idyllic surroundings, while in the nearby Saint-Amand-de-Coly, little adventurers will love peeking into the caves of Lascaux and walking around the prehistoric sites decorated with wall paintings.
