Just south of the Dordogne, near the pretty village of Siorac, Maison Sable is a charming holiday home in wonderful surroundings. With beautiful valley views and vast gardens, this is the most relaxing way to spend your time in this captivating region.

Maison Sable has many guests that keep returning year after year. This is no doubt because of its welcoming atmosphere and homely appeal with many of the owner’s own quirky and charming decorations dotted around the house. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of space to warm up by the grand fireplace after an evening feast on cooler evenings whilst the breakfast room is a most relaxing spot for your morning coffee and pastries, overlooking the glorious grounds. In the summer, open the original French windows from the living room out to the wooden balcony where you can hear the birds sing and you may even catch glimpse of a deer wandering through the gardens.

The five bedrooms are all individual in style and character; bright twins perfect for children and charming French doubles with a more romantic ambience. The fifth bedroom is on a mezzanine in a separate cottage, complete with its own garden and al-fresco dining terrace and a charming little living-dining room with a sofa-bed which can be made-up for guests requiring accessible accommodation.

As you wander around the vast gardens you will find quiet places to sit and think whether it’s by the large pond watching the frogs leap or under a tree seeking shade from the warm summer sun. The swimming pool, set away from the house, has more wonderful countryside vistas around and plenty of space to lounge on the poolside terrace. The summer colours in the garden will awaken your senses as you relax in this charming abode.

This is a great location near the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, an area full of pretty medieval villages, fine wines, truffles, vibrant local markets and unspoilt views of stunning countryside. The quiet and pretty village of Siorac is just a five minutes drive away where you will find restaurants and a lovely market on a Wednesday. Head down to the Dordogne riverside and hire canoes for leisurely paddling along the Dordogne. The beautiful old town of St Cyprien is just a little further over the river with a fantastic market on a Sunday morning.

Other magical trips out should include sampling the delicious black truffle in the city of Périgueux, heading east to the exquisite town of Sarlat or simply exploring some of France’s Plus Beaux Villages along the Dordogne such as La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. Not forgetting the beautiful city of Bergerac with its unmissable Maisons de Vins.

As you return to your delightful holiday home, you will feel you are in the heart of the Dordogne with such wonderful character surrounding you.

The nearest facilities are in the pretty and quiet village of Siorac (2.5km) where you will find a supermarket, bank and restaurants. It’s a lovely place to visit with golden stone buildings with terracotta tiled rooves and the impressive village chateau. Market day is Wednesday morning where you can pick up locally grown produce. Head down to the riverside and hire canoes for leisurely paddling along the Dordogne.

Slightly larger St Cyprien (10km) has a wider choice of facilities with a large supermarket on the outskirts. It’s a beautiful old village which winds up to a 12th century belltower and abbey. There are lots of nice restaurants, interesting boutiques and good spots for coffee in picturesque surroundings. Don’t miss the fantastic market on a Sunday morning.

The Dordogne and Vézère rivers host a wealth of other beautiful villages and towns, many of them classed as France’s Plus Beaux Villages such as glorious Monpazier, a bastide town dating back to the 13th century. To the north-west you have the sophisticated small city of Périgueux, famous for its amazing black truffles and to the east should visit Sarlat with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants. Not forgetting beautiful Bergerac to the west with its medieval architecture, narrow streets of boutiques and great restaurants as well as the unmissable Maisons de Vins.

Other magical day trips include the Lascaux caves, just outside Montignac and beautiful Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne and you can paddle by the river beach or enjoy some fine views from Parc Limeuil after wandering through the delightful village. In addition, head to La Roque Gageac, Château de Beynac or Castelnaud-la-Chapelle for a remarkable day out in the Dordogne.

The whole region is a true haven for nature and sport lovers alike offering a wide array of outdoor activities, from horse-back riding and a nearby pony club to tennis, mountain-biking, golfing and watersports, not to mention the number of hiking and fishing opportunities in the area. Children will love the nearby waterparks, visiting the Aquarium du Perigord Noir and Jungle Golf in Le Bugue, exploring prehistoric caves and historic castles or even a magnificent hot air balloon ride across the stunning region. The more adventurous may enjoy go-karting just south of Périgueux or tree-top activities in the forests near Sarlat or Bergerac.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.
