Rouge Cottage is the perfect place to stay for a relaxing and peaceful holiday in a pretty French cottage with a private, heated pool and stunning views over the charming countryside of the Limousin region.

At the end of a quiet hamlet on a no through road, Rouge Cottage stands in a beautifully panoramic and rural spot which oozes tranquility. Perfect for families or couples wanting to get away from it all and spend time together in privacy.

A private heated pool with stunning views makes this cottage very special. There is also a magnificent castle tree house for the children to enjoy.

The cottage is petite and cosy with everything you need to make it a holiday to remember. It is decorated in a simple and homely way with individual touches and attention to detail, as well as features such as exposed chestnut beams which give it character and charm.

Two bedrooms upstairs (one double and a triple) and a shower room with a separate toilet. Downstairs it is open plan and contains all you need for cooking and relaxing. A wood burner heats the cottage and makes it cosy in the cooler months.

Outside there are sunbeds by the pool with a view over the fields of Limousin cattle. There are various seating areas with an outdoor sofa by the pool and chairs on the back terrace, perfect to watch the sun go down with a glass of wine. Table and chairs with a large umbrella to the front of the cottage and barn provide you with a great seating area outdoors to enjoy your meals on warm sunny days. In the barn there is a table tennis table that may be used inside or out.

Supermarkets can be found locally 10 minutes from the cottage. Five minutes away in either direction there is a boulangerie, butchers and restaurant and within only 15 minutes there are two Michelin star restaurants. There are plenty of markets in all the surrounding towns and villages where you can buy fantastic fresh, local produce.

Three swimming lakes are all within 10 minutes of Rouge Cottage with sandy beaches, cafès and tennis courts. At ‘Espace Hermeline’ in Bussiere- Galant, there is swimming, tennis, velorail, a high ropes course, children’s park, crazy golf and more.

The Limousin is wonderful to explore with its rich history and beautiful countryside. Often overlooked and bypassed, the Haute Vienne offers you the perfect piece of rural France to enjoy a family holiday full of relaxation, good food, culture and memories.

The Haute Vienne oozes history with plenty of Chateaux to visit and many within cycling distance of Rouge Cottage. Chalus is only 10 minutes away, where Richard the Lion heart was fatally wounded by a cross bow bolt. 5km from Rouge Cottage is Chateaux Lastours where in the holidays they hold medieval festivals for all the family. Jumilhac Le Grand is an impressive fairy tale château for any younger princesses and knights to explore.

The roads in this region are quiet and safe due to it being the least populated region in France. This makes it a great place to cycle whether you are ‘en famille’ or into clocking up miles on clean well-made roads. Many of the professional teams use the Limousin as a training ground because of the standard of road surface and climate.

There are many local fishing lakes to choose from if you would like to go fishing for the day.

Haute-Vienne is a department in the Limousin region of France. Named after the Vienne River, it borders the departments of Creuse and Corrèze (also in Limousin), Dordogne to the south in Aquitaine, Charente and Vienne to the west in Poitou-Charentes, and Indre to the north in the Centre department.

The Parc Naturel Regional Perigord-Limousin is an 1800km2 park that straddles the Dordogne-Limousin border, and takes in parts of Haute-Vienne and Dordogne.

There is a wealth of nature, culture, food and activities to explore. Below are just a few possibilities!

Whether you are into the history of Richard the Lion Heart and are keen to follow his route and visit some chateaux or just enjoy the local produce markets and amazing local French food and wine on offer.

There is something for everyone from walking and cycling to fishing or swimming and soaking up the local French culture.

There are numerous walking paths right from the door at Rouge Cottage through the glorious Limousin countryside, which is beautiful right throughout the year.

There are great cycling routes to suit all abilities, particularly the more casual cyclist and families. The roads in the Haute Vienne are smooth and well-maintained, perfect for clocking up some training miles. Each year big name teams arrive for the Tour du Limousin that takes over the region, with spectators lining the route to catch a glimpse of riders. There is also much to offer mountain bikers, with plenty of great dirt tracks and byways. The marked paths around Courbefy are fantastic to explore with steady technical descents. They are a great introduction to mountain biking for novices and would-be off-roaders, but still challenging enough to give the more experienced rider a blast of adrenaline.

Family cycling – Haute-Vienne has some superb places for families to go cycling. The quiet, well maintained roads offer a wonderful way for families to explore the local area. Whether it is heading off for a picnic or cycling to a Chateaux, there are numerous destinations to get to within easy cycling distance from the cottage. From Chalus to Orador–sur-Vayres there is a 13km ride on the old railway line, which is perfect for all members of the family.

Bikes can be hired in Chalus ask at the tourist office.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

This is such a wonderful region for family walks and cycle rides. There are countryside walks straight from the cottage and some great cycling routes for families including the 13km long trail, La Voie Verte des Hauts de Tardoire, following a former railway line between Châlus and Oradour-sur-Vayres. There are also mountain biking opportunities near Courbefy.

Elsewhere, spend time visiting the charming heritage museum just a short drive away, Atelier-Musée de la Terre, and check if any family workshops may be taking place. Close to Flavignac, discover supervised afternoon swimming at a picturesque lake in the height of the summer alongside a children’s play area and an attractive lakeside walk.

Tree-top adventures can be enjoyed at Espace Hermeline, just a 15-minute drive away.
You are also well located for visiting some of the regions magnificent castles such as Château de Montbrun and the Dordogne’s Château de Jumilhac and its gardens, or slightly closer to home are the impressive ruins of Château des Cars and the two castles in Châlus, part of Richard the Lionheart’s rich heritage.

Reviews

  • Perfect

    on 21/08/2024

Rouge cottage is situated in absolutely tranquil surroundings, and was the perfect base for our exploration of the Limousin/Perigord region, at the end of May 2024. From Rouge Cottage the outlook over undulating woodland and pasture is very attractive. We very much appreciated the chorus of frogs at dusk in the nearby ponds and the aerial bat displays! The accommodation is beautifully furnished, exceptionally comfortable and very well equipped. It provides an extremely relaxing and restorative atmosphere. We would wholeheartedly recommend Rouge Cottage, and look forward to revisiting in the summer months when the lovely pool is available to guests.

  • Beautiful French escape

    on 16/05/2024

We had a lovely relaxing week in April at Rouge Cottage. The facilities and games on offer were great however we only realised after booking that the swimming pool (heated) would only be open from June. This needed to be much clearer on the Olivers website as we were expecting to have a nice warm pool, even if the weather was a bit cooler in April. We discovered the local area and found some lovely historic villages as well as a great little takeaway pizzeria in a nearby town. Although the cottage seemed to be out in the middle of knowhere with great views and peace and quiet, there was a selection of shops and supermarkets within 15-20 minutes.
Thanks you to Constance, the owner for keeping in touch before our arrival and making suggestions of places to visit and walks to do and thanks to Charlene for keeping the cottage nice and clean.

  • A lovely stay

We are having a lovely stay thank you.

  • Amazing

    on 04/09/2023

Amazing place to stay. Very peaceful.

  • Wonderful grounds

    on 30/07/2023

A beautiful cottage with wonderful grounds and pool. The kitchen is brilliantly equipped and the books and DVDs are a lovely touch. It only doesn't score 5 for us because of not being able to charge our car there. It did mean my husband having to drive every other day to sit in a charge bay for half an hour (which means a 90 minute trip in total every other day). This isn't the owners fault or ours (the holiday was originally booked before we bought an EV) but it would be a deal breaker for us for any holidays going forward.

  • The setting is beautiful

    on 16/07/2023

A warm welcome and an ideal set-up for our family of four. The kids love the pool and the setting is beautiful.

  • Lovely quiet spot

    on 14/09/2021

Lovely quiet spot at the end of a short lane with views over the surrounding fields. If you want quiet and rural this is for you.

  • Great and peaceful cottage

    on 30/09/2020

Great place for a peaceful family holiday!
We were very nicely welcomed by the host and her family. The cottage is clean and well-equipped, superb views, calm and not so far from bakery and shops. A lot of games to play outside, nice swimming pool and a lot to do in the surroundings (walks, bicycling, castle-visits...).

  • Two idyllic weeks

    Created on 03/08/2020

We spent two idyllic weeks in the magical Rouge Cottage and loved every moment. The owners had thought of everything from the cuddly pandas waiting for our daughters on arrival to the barn jam-packed with fun toys and games for the garden and pool. The Haute Vienne was just the tonic our family needed for our busy lives - nature walks, bike rides, runs and star-gazing nourished the soul, whilst physical nourishment was well taken care of by the incredible local food and wine! Our stay in Rouge Cottage was our best family holiday bar none and we would return in a flash.

  • Loved it!

    on 21/09/2019

Perfect petite cottage. Beautifully clean and tidy, good decor. Great garden and fab pool.

  • Amazing holiday, great memories!

    on 30/08/2019

From start to finish this summer holiday which was also our honeymoon was perfect, when renting Rouge Cottage not only do you receive beautiful accommodation, you receive a warm welcome that’s extended throughout your stay. Jonny, Miranda and their 2 children are the perfect owners to accompany this perfect location. The cottage itself is full of character but packed with home comforts so you really don’t miss a thing. Outside there is an abundance of activities, from archery to badminton. And the swimming pool whether it’s morning or night is a delight. There was 5 of us staying, 2 adults 2 children and 1 baby and not once did we feel there wasn’t enough room. My only words of advice to Jonny and Miranda? Please don’t change a thing, congratulations!

  • Lovely holiday with great service

    on 21/10/2018

Cosy, charming cottage, perfect sun trap and beautiful pool with idyllic views. Olivers provided a great service, with informative updates before the holiday and a thoughtful surprise upon our return.

  • Amazing time!

    on 06/10/2018

Rouge Cottage is a delightfully presented, cosy getaway. Everything you could need on a holiday in a beautiful home; blankets, cushions, ample storage and a range. The fridge is large and unusually incorporates a reasonably sized freezer for stocking up on ice-creams. The swimming pool is beautifully positioned, providing a full day's sun exposure and comfortable seating or lounging, as you wish. Tables and chairs are available allowing escape from the sun (if required) and we found the smaller of the two bar-b-qs available for use more than ample for cooking the fresh fish and meat available from the local Intermarche. We wanted to recharge and unwind and rarely ventured away from the pool - although we were extremely lucky with the sunny days in the first week of October. The tranquility and peacefulness of the location only interrupted with the songs from the birds, cockerel and cows and the odd lizard scuttling here and there. At night time, the sky had to be seen to be believed with a myriad of stars lighting the darkness, we even saw a few shooting stars too!

  • Wonderful!

    on 01/09/2018

Gorgeous little cottage in a gorgeous setting. The view from the pool area is just wonderful. Such a perfect place for a family holiday. On arrival we were met by the lovely owners and their two girls who quickly took our two off for an explore. Our kids (13 and 10) loved the pool, the trampoline and the “toasting marshmallows fire pit” in the wood. In fact it was really hard to drag them away to visit the local area! The cottage is really cute and bijoux but still had sufficient space (although watch those low door heights upstairs!) for us as a family of four. Miranda regularly checked up on us throughout the stay without in any way being intrusive. Just a perfect, perfect week. We will miss that view!

  • What A Great Stay!

    on 25/08/2018

Excellent property, fabulous location and awesome customer service!

  • Truly Wonderful!

    on 18/08/2018

Another blissful holiday at Rouge Cottage. A fantastic private space for us all to enjoy. Lots to do locally when you can drag yourselves away - explore caves, swing on high ropes, whizz down zip wires, canoe down rivers, gaze at the stars. Perfection.

  • Beautiful house, idyllic setting

    on 01/08/2018

Rouge Cottage makes the perfect spot for a family holiday. It is a little slice of paradise in the heart of real France. You are greeted with a simply stunning view in an idyllic setting. The cottage was perfect for our young family - our two boys loved the welcome pandas on their beds - a lovely touch. The pool is amazing, the tree house exciting to explore, and there are many other games to play, including table tennis, trampoline and soft archery. The house was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and really cosy, even though it didn’t need to be, with temperatures in early July over 27º every day. We ran, rode bikes and explored the local area, including the two magnificent public (free) lakes which have water slides, platforms and zip wires. We also visited the caves at Villars and loved our quintessentially French meal at Le Relais de Gorre - a must visit! Overall, we could not recommend Rouge Cottage highly enough, and our contact with the owners was first class and professional - they came across as lovely, caring people who really have a passion for making your stay as good as possible. If you want a peaceful, private and picturesque place that feels like the most magical and relaxing spot in the world, go to Rouge Cottage (although we’d rather keep it a secret, so we can go again next year!).

  • Fabulous family holiday

    on 31/07/2018

Rouge Cottage is the perfect haven to relax and unwind. The outdoor space was amazing. The kids had a blast, switching from all the fabulous garden games (too many to list) to climbing the tree house, to jumping on the trampoline and of course to swimming in the pool. This enabled us to relax on the sun lounges and admire the stunning panoramic views, knowing the children were in their elements.
And it didn’t stop there. The cottage had all the creature comforts of home you’d wish for. We especially enjoyed the warmth of the log burner as we settled in for the night.
We were thoroughly spoilt and would happily return for another fabulous family holiday.

  • A Delight!

    Created on 29/07/2018

Prepare to be enveloped when you stay at Rouge cottage; by the peace and tranquillity of the setting, the snug interior of the cottage itself and the friendliness of the neighbours as you pass them on their daily business. Whilst you can stay local - there are plenty of lovely walks and runs around the hamlet and the pool to cool off in afterwards - a car is a must to see the sights and do essentials such as shopping. We were spared the latter on arrival as our wonderful hosts had arranged a 'goodie' basket for us. What better way to start the holiday than with a glass of wine, fresh bread and cheese whilst soaking up the views across the fields. It set the tone for a very special week

  • The Perfect Place!

    Created on 23/07/2018

If you want a week away from the Hurley burley in a perfect place, red cottage is for you. Everything you could possibly want is provided, the pool is wonderful, everything is immaculately clean, and the view is heavenly. The owners are incredibly kind and generous and helpful, and very available if you need them. Red cottage is a hidden jewel. I will be coming back as often as possible.

  • A Delight!

Lovely cottage, lovely owners, peaceful place!

  • A Charming Stay!

    on 20/07/2018

Thank you for a wonderful stay. Your cottage is just idyllic! We had a wonderful one week long stay at Rouge Cottage in early July. We were met by the very friendly housekeeper, Anna, who showed us around. We had detailed directions from Miranda and Jonny prior to leaving the UK. Miranda was extremely helpful when we had to contact her during the holiday. We hadn’t realised she was still in the UK as the line was so clear. The cottage itself is absolutely charming. Beautifully decorated throughout with some original artwork by the very talented owner displayed. We loved the big kitchen and the girls spent time scrap booking and drawing there when they needed a wee break from the sun. The cottage is a perfect destination for families with children. Our children are aged 6 and 15 but there was plenty to occupy them both. We loved playing with the soft archery and table tennis. My younger daughter loved looking for insects and watering the geraniums. My older daughter loved relaxing by the pool and the indoor trampoline. The private heated pool is what really made this holiday special for us. Every morning, afternoon and evening we had fun in there together. My husband stayed outside poolside reading until the sun began to set. Sheer bliss. Just stunning. A very special wee house.

  • Fresh

    on 16/07/2018

A beautiful little Cottage. Spacious kitchen. Fabulous private pool. Clean, fresh air.

  • Simply Wonderful!

    on 28/05/2018

If you’re looking for a relaxing week in the French countryside in a lovely cottage, Rouge Cottage is ideal. We loved lazing in the huge garden enjoying the great weather, using the swimming pool to cool down and going for walks with stunning views. Rouge Cottage looks great, is cosy and full of character and modernised inside with all the facilities for a comfortable stay.

  • Extremely Beautiful

    on 23/10/2017

We enjoyed two fantastic weeks at the Rouge Cottage. The cottage had everything we needed for a peaceful and comfortable vacation. The whole setting is extremely beautiful. We will never forget the lazy pool evenings with star gazing.
Miranda and Jonny are very, very friendly and helpful hosts, who really care about their guests in a relaxed but committed way. We very warmly recommend the cottage for all those who want to have a quiet and comfortable vacation.

  • Simply Faultless

    on 22/08/2017

A beautifully kept holiday home in a pretty, peaceful hamlet, Rouge Cottage is the perfect place for children who want to play and parents who wish to relax.
The heated swimming pool allows for a dip at any time of day, while those who want to stay on dry land can play (as loudly as they wish!) in the large, private garden or leafy woodland. A barn with trampoline also houses several games for the garden. Just brilliant.
Aside from the cottage, highlights of our visit included visits to two well-kept nearby swimming lakes (one with a flume, diving board and island; the other a family-friendly fishing spot -- worth staying all day), a trip to the quiet medieval town of St Yrieix La Perche, and visits to nearby boulangeries.
The owners were extremely warm, welcoming and helpful without being intrusive, and we were very grateful to them for the bottle of wine, some freshly baked goodies and other treats after our journey from Calais.
If you're interested in booking this cottage, do it now before someone else does. It's wonderful! Unanimously rated by our family of four as a perfect 10.

  • A Cottage with a Special View

    on 17/08/2017

We loved Rouge Cottage so much we came back a second time and it is a magical place for us. We love the cottage for its cute, simple cottage decor and the little touches. The stairs made us smile every time we climbed them and the decoration just felt right. It had everything we needed and was big enough for the two of us and perfect when our friends came to join us. Our friends' kids loved the fort tree house and we loved the pool. The far reaching views meant we spent many hours just gazing out across the fields and 360 open skies allowed us to indulge in our hobby of Astrophotography. This area has one of the darkest skies in Europe so is ideal for any astronomers or anyone who just likes to see the stars at night. The owners do all they can to make sure your stay is a happy one and deserve the pride they have for their lovely cottage. We can't wait for our 3rd visit to Rouge Cottage.

  • A real home from home: we would love to return!

    on 22/07/2017

We had a fantastic week at Rouge Cottage – two adults and two older children. We found it a charming property; cosy and beautifully decorated and it felt like a real home from home. It looked small in the pictures, but was deceptively large inside. There was plenty of room for the four of us, even when confined on a rainy day. The icing on the cake is undoubtedly the pool and the absolutely stunning views on three sides, making Rouge Cottage such a perfect place to take some time out, relax and unwind. The barn contains games and other things to do, including a barbecue, the garden is large and self-contained and the amazing treehouse would definitely keep younger guests occupied for hours on end. There’s plenty to do in the local area, with pretty towns and beautiful chateaux, but for the most part the cottage was so lovely we opted to stay there and really relax. We would definitely love to return and have already recommended it to several friends"

  • Gorgeous cottage!

    on 01/05/2017

This cottage is absolutely gorgeous, it's picturesque and just what we needed for a week of peace and relaxation.
Beautifully decorated inside in a cute French style, with countryside views and the most amazing night's sky, it's a gem. We had fun making our own fire in the wood burning stove, had a couple of BBQ's, spent hours swimming in the pool and visited the local boulangerie for warm, fresh bread and the boucherie for fillet steak - everything was delicious. The local towns and countryside are lovely to wander round and we visited Hautefort Chateau a short drive away, it's well worth a visit.
The cottage itself is dinky and petite but for us that added to it's appeal. We visited as a couple and found it a perfect size, with everything we could need in the kitchen and a really good shower. We loved its rural location and felt like we were getting a real escape from the noise and lights of our home city. Having said that, it was lovely to have a strong Wi-Fi connection to FaceTime home and show off!
Jonny and Miranda are the most friendly hosts and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. From giving us directions, advice on the area, a pool cover demo, tour of the cottage and having it immaculate for our arrival, we couldn't have asked for more.
Besides the first day being a little overcast, the weather was stunning with blue skies everyday. Being April it was warm but not roasting hot and as Scots we were pleased with that! The pool was heated just right and there was table tennis in the barn to keep us entertained between swims.
We can't wait to come back to Rouge Cottage and are already planning our next stay. If I could give it more stars I would!

  • A fantastic time at Rouge Cottage

    on 18/04/2017

The Cottage itself was incredibly well presented, beautifully decorated, clean, and had everything we would possibly need - it was gorgeous and also in a fantastic location. The pool and outside areas were particularly good. The owners, Jonny and Miranda were lovely - Miranda had even made us a lovely lasagne and homemade scones for our arrival. There were also sweets, wine and treats for our dog! They were incredibly thoughtful and helpful, and their advice really helped us make the most of our holiday.
I have already had several friends ask me for booking details after seeing my holiday pictures on social media, and we will certainly be back. Thank you for providing such a high quality holiday destination!

  • We'll be back next year without a doubt

    on 06/12/2016

What a fantastic find! This was a wonderful week in a wonderful property with wonderful weather. Jonny and Miranda made us feel such at home and the cottage was very well-equipped. The pool was so inviting at all times of the day, but our three girls also enjoyed the many lakes in the area. The views were stunning and the peace and quiet was just what we were after. We'll be back next year without a doubt.

  • Absolutely wholeheartedly recommend!

We stayed for one week with our three girls (6,9,11) and had a fantastic family time. The house is private and perfect to relax in. Johnny, Miranda and their girls made us feel so welcome and even baked for our arrival. Plenty for kids to do, a small wood to explore and to top it all a perfect pool setting. Beds and bedrooms small but very comfortable and nicely decorated. We couldn't have asked for more. Would absolutely wholeheartedly recommend!

  • Beautiful house in a peaceful location

    on 12/09/2016

We stayed at the Rouge Cottage in August with our two children (9 and 11). We were over the moon when we arrived at the beautiful location, pool and cottage. It has been beautifully decorated and the pool is wonderful with fantastic views and furniture around it. There was also a large parking area and a barn with activity equipment inside for the children. We enjoyed a relaxing two week stay in the peaceful location in the beautiful weather and would have no hesitation in recommending this villa.

  • A lovely relaxing holiday away!!

    on 26/07/2016

My partner and I stayed at Rouge Cottage for a week during the summer. It is located in the peaceful country-side. The cottage is beautifully decorated and the beds are really comfortable. It has a well-equipped kitchen and brand new cooker to use. The pool is large, clean and the perfect temperature. The view from the pool area is also amazing and it's nice to relax with drinks and food by it. Overall we had a lovely relaxing holiday away!!
