Region
One of France’s most visited destinations, Sarlat-la-Canéda is a beautiful medieval town with a superb reputation for its gastronomy. Staying near Sarlat allows you to experience the town’s rich heritage alongside its fine cuisine, whilst also being close to idyllic villages and natural scenery of the Périgord Noir, never far from the meandering Dordogne River.
Exquisitely restored, explore the old town with its warren of winding lanes with inviting shops, restaurants and characterful cafes. Take a guided tour to truly appreciate Sarlat’s rich history dating back to medieval and Renaissance times – the small yet attractive Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, once a Benedictine abbey, is one of the main highlights of the town.
Spend time learning all about the region’s gastronomy, best experienced at the traditional outdoor market on a Saturday or Wednesday morning. Local specialities are of course served in Sarlat’s many excellent restaurants or bought in little shops across the town – look out for foie-gras, truffles, honey, chestnuts and walnuts. There is also an organic market on Thursday afternoons and a charming covered market near the cathedral.
If staying in the height of the summer, join in one of the region’s marchés nocturnes in nearby villages where you can enjoy local food amongst locals accompanied by good wine and music.
Elsewhere, visit the grand châteaux of the Dordogne (Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac are both less than half an hour away from Sarlat), stroll around elegant gardens (Les Jardins de Marqueyssac by candlelight is especially atmospheric) and visit picture-perfect riverside villages such as La Roque-Gageac and Domme, both classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Heading north instead, the famous caves of Lascaux are also within easy reach.
Hot air balloon rides are a great way to admire the landscapes of the Périgord Noir or simply canoe along the Dordogne River in glorious surroundings. There are of course wonderful walks, tree-top adventure centres and fantastic cycling routes including the 29km-long voie verte stretching from Sarlat to Cazoulès following a former railway line passing magnificent Dordogne countryside.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesMaison Esperance is in a fantastic location for exploring the best of the Dordogne and beyond with plenty to keep all ages entertained.
Cycling enthusiasts note that a family-friendly voie verte on the other side of the river that partly follows a former railway line between Souillac and Sarlat-la-Canéda whilst there are some lovely walks straight from the estate.
If you love tree-top adventures then look out for the two accrobranche centres around 14km away, just east of Sarlat, with trails for a range of ages as well as paintballing and via ferrata.
The Réserve Zoologique de Calviac is another nice day out as you follow trails looking out for a great range of animals from across the world, as long as you don’t mind the sometimes hilly paths.
Find riverside beaches, summer swimming and plenty of seasonal kayaking and canoeing opportunities along the Dordogne between Domme and Souillac. Another picturesque waterside spot is Plage de Groléjac, just 13km to the south, where there are pleasant nature walks and occasional supervised swimming in the height of the summer.
Known as the region of ‘1001 châteaux’ don’t miss a trip to one of the many iconic castles within a short drive, perhaps starting off at Château de Fénelon which is very close by.

Feeling at home
Our host was here to meet us and show us around the property, which was clean and well stocked with goodies! Couldn’t ask for a better welcome. Feeling at home already.

A superb place to stay
For the second successive year we were delighted that the accommodation at Maison Esperance was certainly perfect and extremely well appointed. The few tiny issues we had were speedily resolved and the property was set up as we had requested for our family of 14. All the staff we had dealings with were extremely competent and intent on our vacation going as well as possible.

A Stunning Area
Lovely, comfortable, well appointed house. Beautiful grounds and pool. Fabulous views from all windows. The local area is stunning. We appreciated the little extras from the owner such as coffee pods and bathroom products.

We want to come back next year
We are so enjoying Maison Esperance - we think the house is stunning and the area is perfect for us with the proximity to the river Domme plus those gorgeous walking routes for our morning runs. We adored the evening food market at Chateau de Fenelon - thanks so much for suggesting it - and Sharon has been fantastic too. We'd LOVE to get a date in the diary to book it again for next year.
