This graceful French château is in a simply stunning location in the Esterel National Park on the French Riviera just minutes from the beaches of the Mediterranean. With fifteen elegant bedrooms and five beautiful reception rooms, this is the perfect place for a relaxing family retreat, a special celebration or a majestic and romantic wedding.
Villa Amalie was dreamed up by Lord Amherst at the beginning of the 20th century, much of the charm and character still remains to this day such as the antique furnishings, the grand staircase and of course the lovely views from the bedrooms of mountains, forests and the sea. Recent renovations have brought the villa back to its former glory with added modern amenities such as a heated swimming pool, gym, home-cinema room and pool table plus air-conditioning and WiFi throughout. The atmosphere here is one of romance with a strong sense of history in this dreamy location.
Exclusive services are included with your stay: a security guard, on-site guardians and maid will ease your stay. A private chef or chauffeur can be arranged, a private yacht can be chartered and a whole host of activities can be organised such as art classes, wine-tasting or sporting events in or near the villa.
It is indeed the perfect place for a unique event, celebration or wedding and a special team can be made available to you to ensure every need is catered for. Up to 80 guests can be seated in the historical reception rooms or dine al-fresco in the delightful courtyard surrounded by loggias and the fountain in this magnificent setting.
You are surrounded by woodland walks with direct access to the Esterel National Park and a stunning golf course is just a five-minute drive away. Yet within only five kilometres you can be in the nearby towns of Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël by the sea, each with a distinct character. Fréjus is an ancient Roman city full of monuments, whilst there's plenty of fun to be had in Saint-Raphaël (try the Casino Barrière by the sea)! For fine dining, stop by at the Restaurant Stéphane Léger - a worthy adventure outside your heavenly villa.

Region
Despite being renowned for its annual international film festival in May at the iconic Palais des Festivals, Cannes is not just a glamourous destination for the rich and famous. The attractive Côte d’Azur town is loved all year round for its palm-fringed beaches, upmarket shopping opportunities and wonderful restaurants as well as a certain French Riviera charm.
Stroll along Cannes’ iconic La Croisette boulevard following the footsteps of stars from years gone by as you admire prestigious hotels, luxurious boutiques and private beach clubs. Stop off for a cocktail as the sun sets and admire the twinkling lights across the bay. Even at night, La Croisette remains the vibrant heart of this bustling town.
Shop to your heart’s delight along the streets of the Carré d’Or district – come across hundreds of well-known stores along Rue d’Antibes. At the end of a busy day there’s a vast choice of restaurants to suit every taste and budget from authentic bistros spilling out on to the street to Michelin starred establishments.
Soak up the historic side of Cannes as you explore Le Suquet quarter’s medieval lanes passing little shops, atmospheric restaurants, flower-filled balconies and old fishermen’s houses. Climb to the top of the hill by Église Notre-Dame d'Espérance for stunning views of the harbour, followed by a visit to Château de la Castre and its popular museum. This part of Cannes is also home to the colourful Marché Forville showcasing the very best gourmet delights of Cannes and beyond.
Escape the crowds as you venture to Croix Des Gardes natural park with forest walking routes, botanical plants and glorious views across to the Lérins Islands. Look out for some fantastic boat trips from Cannes’ marina from whale and dolphin-watching excursions to family adventures on board a chartered yacht, sight-seeing ferries and romantic sun-set cruises.
Beyond the city centre, visit the ceramic studios and National Picasso Museum in Vallauris, follow Picasso’s footsteps in the enchanting hilltop village of Mougins (loved for its galleries and gastronomy) and appreciate the artistic vibe of Biot with beautiful views of the French Riviera. Chic Juan-les-Pins, so loved by Parisians in the summer, is home to beachside restaurants and more watersports whilst keen walkers will adore the incredible coastal trail around Cap d’Antibes.
In the other direction is the charming seaside village of Théoule-sur-Mer, backed by the dramatic Esterel massif, another paradise for hikers. By staying in one of our collection of handpicked rentals in Cannes you can experience all of this and more during your time on the glistening Côte d’Azur.

Morag
How long have you owned the property?
08 years.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The beauty and grace of the chateau and the stunning surrounding countryside of the Esterel national park whilst only minutes from the sea.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The chateau was built by Lord Amherst of London in 1904. British nobility choose the area for the healthy air and peaceful environment. Lord Amherst helped to fund Howard Carter's trips and excavations of the Tutankhamun tomb.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Simon Cowell and the X factor team. Simon chose it as his Judge's house for the girls! Sir Phillip Green and friends all came for a picnic in the garden.
What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
Mariah Carey wanted white flowers everywhere and a grand piano perched by the pool and Simon Cowell requested black straws and copious amounts of chocolate and ginger!
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Visit the excellent local vineyards and sample the provencal wines.
Really eat?
Wonderful fresh sea bass and bream caught locally.
Really see?
The stunning creeks and red cliffs and go on a coastal trek.
Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Aperitifs by the pool as the sun sets is fantastic followed by candlelit dinner in the historic cloisters, wonderful and very romantic. The area is excellent for water and land sports and local beaches are very child friendly.

Merci Beaucoup
Thank you so much for a really wonderful stay. Everything was 5*… As for Vanessa and her lovely family, and of course the most beautiful Janice, what can I say other than merci beaucoup, probable uttered in my inexcusably poor French accent - so sorry for that, I felt so at home and so pampered. My very best of wishes, as ever, Michael.
