Pool Modern Ideal for Kids Walk to Beach Laptop Friendly Workspace Romantic

Be mesmerised by the sea views of La Côte Bleue as you stay along one of the Mediterranean’s stunning coastlines between Marseille and Martigues, a short stroll to the most delightful port, restaurant and little bay.

The vistas are simply outstanding from the vast terraces of La Cabane which enjoys such a privileged setting above the sea and calanques below. Swim in the gorgeous swimming pool, lie back in a lazy hammock and dine al-fresco by the summer kitchen as you look out towards the Mediterranean. There’s even a little play area for younger guests set beneath one of the many majestic pines that add such natural character to this contemporary abode.

Inside this beautiful 5-bedroom villa, the interiors are comfortable and stylish with air-conditioning throughout. The lounge and dining space is all about open plan living with sliding doors leading straight to one of the many terraces whilst the kitchen is sleek with large windows framing the views of the hills and sea.

This part of the coastline is known for its calanques, creeks and fishing villages, as well as some incredible hiking paths by the pine trees and dramatic rocks. Come across idyllic spots such as Mejean and Sausset-les-Pins, enjoy an atmospheric lunch out in Carry-le-Rouet or simply relax on the sandy shores of Plage du Verdon. There are also opportunities for mountain biking, golf, horse-riding, boat trips and other water-based adventures.

Martigues is another gem of this region, known for its Venice-style canals, bridges and colourful houses, also close to the vast Étang de Berre. Visit Istres for one of the étang’s beaches and a huge range of watersports and look out for amusement parks to keep all ages entertained.

Not forgetting Marseille, such an exciting city reached by train or car – admire its diverse architecture and alluring old town as you soak up Marseille’s truly authentic vibe.

La Cabane is in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France and enjoys sensational views of the bay of Marseille – a stunning part of the Mediterranean coast known as La Côte Bleue.

You can wander to the delightful little port where there is a restaurant and café – visitors flock here in the summer for its beauty and charm and there are a couple of stony little bays at the very end with gorgeously clear water – pack your sea shoes for the rocks. There is also a train station with occasional departures to Marseille and Miramas. Drive a short distance inland to the heart of the village for further amenities including a supermarket and a weekly market.

This part of the coastline is popular with hikers who follow magnificent coastal routes along the calanques, passing dramatic rocks and majestic pines with the most glorious views. There are other beautiful walks in the hills as well – do check for restrictions in July and August when the risk of fire may close some of the paths.

La Côte Bleue is a joy to explore whether you love swimming, snorkelling or walking.  Hop on the train and come across picture-perfect spots such as Mejean and the fishing village of Sausset-les-Pins. Carry-le-Rouet (9km) is another pretty port with several wonderful fish restaurants, surrounded by pine forests and walking trails, whilst Plage du Verdon (20km) is a fantastic long sandy beach, especially perfect for families.

Across this vast coastline you will find horse-riding, a range of summer watersports, mountain biking opportunities, atmospheric markets as well as vibrant summer festivities.

Continuing to Martigues (20km), discover the Étang de Berre and admire the Canal Caronte which has given the town the reputation of being a Provençal style Venice with its bridges and islands. Colourful old houses line the canal where fishermen once lived, and the town is also known for its gardens and flowers.

Explore more of the Étang de Berre by visiting some of its beaches such as Plage De La Romaniquette in Istres (40km) where the water is monitored. It is also a paradise for watersport enthusiasts with a great range of activities.

You can even visit the historic and artistic town of Arles (73km) for a brilliant day out, the gateway to the mesmerising landscapes of the Camargue. Closer to home, head east to experience the vibrancy of Marseille (26km) with its diverse architecture, contemporary museums, atmospheric old town and, overall, the city’s authentic character.

Pack your jelly shoes to admire the many beautiful creeks and little bays along the La Côte Bleue, some which can be reached by train or car, others by stunning walking trails for more experienced hikers. It’s a paradise for snorkellers with the crystal-clear blue sea along this coastline.

Families with younger children may prefer the long sandy beach at Plage du Verdon, around 20km away, which has lifeguards in the summer months.

The region around La Côte Bleue offers ample opportunities for horse-riding, mountain biking, long walks of varying abilities as well as boat trips and watersports.

Spend the day admiring the Venetian-like charm of Martigues with its canals, bridges and islands, then continue on to explore the Étang de Berre with plenty more water-based activities, especially around the town of Istres, home of Plage De La Romaniquette.

You will also spot several amusement parks – Hissého near Istres is a pirate-themed park for under 12s whilst young dinophiles may enjoy Dinosaur'Istres near the banks of Étang de l’Olivier, both around 40km away. Much closer to home, Magic Park Land, offers weekend attractions for a range of ages and is only 7km by car.
