La Garde Freinet is a medieval French mountain village, located in the Massif des Maures, 15km northwest of Saint Tropez. Accessible by picturesque winding roads, through forests of cork, oaks, and chestnuts. Established in the 11th century, the village has preserved its character with its field stone houses, old fashioned street names, and a village square framed with restaurants and local art galleries. From atop old Fort Freinet one can see the plains of Saint-Clément and the Argens valley, all the way to the Alps.

The nearby village of Plan de la Tour is certainly worth a visit, full of charm and tradition, you will not be disappointed. It is also a great starting point for hiking and walking, leading you across the beautiful countryside.

Similarly, the medieval town of Grimaud is abundant with winding streets leading up to the Romanesque church and castle ruins. The village also extends town to the coast, where you can discover the beautiful port which attracts thousands of international visitors annually.

A trip to the French Riviera would not be complete without visiting St. Tropez. Famous for its food, beaches, port and stars, this is a must-see port town. Stroll along the harbour front and admire the super yachts before taking a seat at one of the many restaurants for a delicious lunch then heading off to one of the many party beaches. The 3 mile long beach of Pampelonne is the crown jewel with white sand and warm blue seas, a haven for sun tanning and gentle paddling.

Region

Once a traditional fishing village, Saint-Tropez is now one of the most glamourous destinations of the Côte d’Azur and welcomes visitors from across the world.

However, there’s more to Saint-Tropez bay than exclusive beach clubs, glitzy boutiques and fine dining restaurants. From the family-friendly beaches of Sainte-Maxime to the vineyards of La Croix Valmer, Oliver’s Travels guests can truly admire this enchanting corner of the French Riviera whilst staying in one of our handpicked villas in and around Saint-Tropez.

Soak up the luxurious yet laidback vibe of Saint-Tropez as you wander around its marina lined with huge yachts contrasting colourful fishermen’s houses overlooking the bay. The old quarter is a warren of winding lanes with French designer boutiques, picturesque cafes and restaurants whilst Place des Lices hosts a vibrant Provençal market on a Tuesday and Saturday morning. Enjoy the most glorious vistas from Saint-Tropez’s 17th century citadel and maritime museum. Boat trips are another superb way to tour this part of the coast and passenger ferries cross the bay.

Just south of the town, follow Brigitte Bardot’s footsteps as you visit one of Plage de Pampelonne’s exclusive beach clubs, the most famous being Le Club 55 (always book well in advance). Stretching over 5km, Pampelonne’s long sandy beach is also loved for its vast range of summer watersports including jet-skiing, windsurfing and paddleboarding.

The picture-perfect villages of Saint-Tropez bay are beautifully located to make the most of the French Riviera scenery. On the hillside overlooking Plage de Pampelonne, Ramatuelle has attracted artists and writers over the years and is full of charm – look out for performances during its theatre and jazz festivals in the summer months. Meanwhile, hilltop Gassin is classified as one of France’s 'Plus Beaux Villages’ whilst flower-filled Grimaud is such a pretty medieval village with yet more stunning views of the coast.

Driving into the Maures hills, discover the characterful villages of La Garde-Freinet and Le Plan-de-la-Tour surrounded by oak and chestnut forests, a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, horse-riding enthusiasts and other outdoor adventurists.

Back to the coast, take a boat tour of Port Grimaud, known as the ‘little Venice of the Côte d’Azur’, and experience its atmospheric Monday evening summer market. Across the other side of the bay, Sainte-Maxime is a lovely sheltered seaside town with pretty cafes, a daily market and gorgeous beaches. Families adore this area – there are tree-top adventures, tennis, mini-golf, a water park and coastal paths for biking and hiking.

Golf-lovers can appreciate a choice of courses – Golf Blue Green as well as the prestigious Beauvallon Golf Club and Golf Club Saint-Tropez. Wine connoisseurs should head to the wine châteaux of Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne as well as the vineyards of La Croix Valmer.

Not forgetting the idyllic shores of soft sand and crystal-clear sea of La Croix Valmer’s coastline from Plage de Sylvabelle to Plage de Gigaro, also home to a wonderful coastal walking trail with the most incredible flora and fauna alongside sensational views of the Mediterranean as you hike towards Cap Lardier and beyond.

Kids

Best Suited For: Teens

Families can look out for paintballing, go-karting, tennis clubs and water parks in the surrounding region, not to mention some amazing boat trips from sightseeing along the coast to whale watching in the Mediterranean.

You’ll find some great watersports across the gulf, from as far north as Sainte-Maxime to Pampelonne beach in the south. Try jet-skiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, paddle-boarding and snorkelling. The gulf is also well known for its wreck dives and you can learn to sail in Saint Tropez.

Taking a break from sand and sea, the children will enjoy Azur Park (16km) an amusement park with 35 attractions with exciting roller coasters, less giddy making rides and a prehistoric animal themed mini-golf course.

Appreciate the incredible landscapes of the hinterland on horseback with a riding centre near Grimaud or head out on family walks and cycle rides, following marked trails across a variety of terrains.

    on 29/06/2023

After traveling from afar to experience the charm of Southern France, staying at this lovely villa was fantastic.
From a traveler's perspective, this villa offers a truly remarkable location. Perched atop a hill, it unveils sprawling vistas of the French countryside that are nothing short of a revelation. The golden hours leading up to sunset were particularly mesmerizing, although the sun did tend to dip behind a mountain before dinnertime. This, however, added to the quaint allure of the place and is only a plus in the heat of the summer in France.
The villa's amenities are a welcome retreat for those who have travelled far. The inviting pool, coupled with a perfect outdoor setting under the beautiful pergola was a great escape from the heat of the Southern France summer. Inside, the villa offers a modern and comfortable environment.
We were thrilled to discover the nearby village of La Garde Freinet. Its charming streets, delightful restaurants and bars provided a welcome respite from the day's adventures. It's the perfect place to unwind and connect with the local culture.
As a traveller seeking refuge from the daily grind and the chance to explore distant lands, my stay at this villa was truly great. While the sunsets may come a bit early, it adds a unique touch to the experience. It's clear that this destination is most enjoyable during the summer months, making it a perfect retreat for sun-seekers. The villa’s exceptional location, excellent amenities, and the real proximity to La Garde Freinet make it an unforgettable experience, especially during the sizzling South of France summer.
