Featuring the traditional aesthetics of the pretty villas that adorn the streets of Portes en Ré, along with a modern and comfortable interior, this delightful five-bedroomed villa, with heated pool, is a terrific base for your stay on the salubrious Ile de Ré. Up to ten guests will be a strong tee-shot from the challenging Golf de Trousse-Chemise, along with the dreamy sands and sunsets of La Plage de Trousse-Chemise.

Minimalist décor with subtle nautical theming is order of the day around this stunning villa’s roomy interior. The huge floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to the lounge and dining rooms give way to sensational garden views, while maximising natural light in the bright and spacious main living area. Foodies will love this home’s large, superbly appointed kitchen and the stylish dining table will comfortably seat all your guests.

There’s plenty of flexibility in terms of sleeping arrangements too, with the option to split the double beds in all five of Villa Bonnard’s tastefully furnished bedrooms. The master bedroom features an en-suite bathroom, comprising twin washbasins, a bathtub, shower and WC, along with portes-fenêtres that beckon in glorious sunshine, leading directly onto the terrace. The two bedrooms without dedicated showers are served by the villa’s main bathroom, which also features two washbasins and a shower.

The villa offers a smaller, secondary kitchen adjacent to two of the bedrooms, along with direct access to the poolside terrace. This additional kitchen is perfect for chilling poolside drinks, as well as preparing delicious dinners to enjoy at sunset.

Step outside and converge with the island’s natural beauty – the grounds are surrounded by beautifully kept topiary, with native pine and cypress trees decorating the lush lawn to the rear of the villa. There’s a chance for guests to enjoy some gentle competition, alongside the superbly curated front garden – anyone for table tennis? From your base at Villa Bonnard, you’ll be in both a beach lover’s and gourmet’s heaven! Golfers are within a short walk from the predominantly flat but technically challenging Golf de Trousse Chemise, with club hire available.

L’Ile de Ré has gained the nickname of ‘The Hamptons of France’ with good reason. Long since a favoured destination of sophisticated Parisians, this small and delightfully formed island is typified by unspoiled sandy coastlines, meandering cycle routes through the varied landscape, mouth-watering seafood and glorious summer weather.

The local village is home to some of the most stunning, unspoilt beaches on the island. One of these is just a short cycle ride from Villa Bonnard. With a short but stunning ride through the woods as you approach, grassy dunes and magical sunset walks along the Banc du Bûcheron, you’ll be in awe of the fabulous coastline that’s virtually on your doorstep.

The village also proudly boasts some of the finest restaurants on the whole island, as well as a terrific seafood market and daily, morning markets where you will find a phenomenal range of local cheeses, wines and of course, the freshest and most delicious seafood imaginable.

Take a leisurely ride twenty-minute ride through the Lilleau des Niges nature reserves, where you’ll see a wide range of bird species in stunning surroundings, before reaching one of France’s foremost oyster producers at La Ferme des Baleines. Here, you’ll find thirty-five hectares where the finest clear oysters, imperial prawns, clams and more are expertly produced for discerning chefs – and home cooks like you! You’ll have the chance to buy a selection of wonderful seafood and, if you book ahead online, there are tours with wine and oyster tasting sessions throughout the summer season.

Region

Vast beaches, cycling paths, salt marshes, kite-surfing, pretty villages and fine seafood - Île de Ré is a small island on France’s Atlantic coast with endless opportunities for every generation.

The island is easily reached via the 3km long bridge from the mainland, Pont de l'île de Ré, only minutes from La Rochelle Airport. If arriving by train, Gare La Rochelle is less than 3 hours from Paris-Montparnasse via TGV whilst the ferry ports of Saint-Malo, Caen-Ouistreham and Le Havre are easily reached by car.

Be charmed by the island’s main town, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, steeped in history with its half-timbered houses, flower-filled lanes and Vauban citadel – indeed, the fortifications are now a UNESCO World Heritage site (guided tours can be arranged). Come across some the best ice-cream on the island at La Martinière by the bustling harbour. Stroll up to Église Saint-Martin de Ré and admire the panoramic views from its historic belltower.

Other idyllic villages include La Flotte with its characterful market and Ars en Ré surrounded by salt marshes, both classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. There’s another great market at Le Bois Plage en Ré, a lovely little town with long sandy beaches, whilst Les Portes-en-Ré is another jewel of the island next to vast salt marshes and sandy shores. The 18-hole Golf de Trousse Chemise is just south of Les Portes-en-Ré and there is a superb cycling trail through the pine forest towards the iconic Phare des Baleines for more stunning views.

Indeed, the island is famous for its cycling routes thanks to dedicated trails through vineyards, forests and salt marshes. The island is a paradise for watersport enthusiasts with kite-surfing, jet-skiing and surfing in the ocean as well as canoeing, kayaking and paddle-boarding through the marshes, a fantastic way to appreciate the island’s diverse flora and fauna.

Île de Ré’s gastronomy is also to be celebrated – discover seasonal delights such as the island’s highly regarded potatoes, cheese, samphire, honey, shellfish and of course a range of natural salt products. Since the 13th century the island has cultivated vines and there are some excellent wines to try. Finally, don’t miss experiencing the oyster huts dotted across the island, often accompanied by a glass of chilled white wine of course.

The beaches around the village are perfect for families, with golden sands and gently sloping beaches. Hit the waves on a motorboat ride, take an afternoon out fishing in the Atlantic waters, or rent some equipment and get stuck into some kayaking, bodyboarding or test your balance on a stand-up paddleboard – or simply grab some frozen macarons and chill on the beach.

As Ile de Ré is blessed with a fantastic network of cycle paths, you’ll see families trekking around the fabulous landscape of salt marshes, forests and glorious stretches of coast, as well as just heading to grab gelatos or heading for dinner at one of the island’s many glorious seafood restaurants. Do as so many visitors do each year and hire bikes locally for some or the duration of your stay.

For more adventure, head to the Parc de l'Aerodrome in La Rochelle, which features playgrounds and picnic areas, or visit the aquarium in La Rochelle for an engaging underwater experience.
