As well as the 6-person hot tub with cité vistas, there’s a perfectly placed dining and lounge terrace with the same amazing views and you can even see the ramparts from the boules court. On the other side of the house, a covered terrace is ideal for relaxed al-fresco dining overlooking the heated salt-water swimming pool and second hot tub below, alongside a pretty garden and children’s play area.
Inside across two levels, there’s an open-plan kitchen-diner alongside the sitting area whilst a TV lounge gives you extra room downstairs. Each of the six bedrooms, with sleeping arrangements for up to 15 guests, features air-conditioning and an en suite shower room. Across this beautiful house there’s a great feeling of style, space and comfort.

To explore further afield, take the train to Castelnaudary, Toulouse and Narbonne or venture by car to idyllic villages, market towns, Languedoc vineyards, Cathar castles and even the beaches of the Mediterranean – within an hour you could be wind-surfing at Gruissan-Plage or pottering around the charming resort and vast sandy beaches of Leucate, two seaside gems of southern France.

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa ChatelainWhat a location – Villa Chatelain is just a short stroll from the La Cité de Carcassonne, Europe’s largest medieval walled city and a UNESCO World Heritage site!
It’s a beautiful setting, with views over the villa’s vineyard towards the historic ramparts on one side of the house and the pretty garden and neighbouring houses on the other. Step out of your entrance gate, walk up the country lane (no pavement) passing the vineyard on one side and within 500m you will find yourself standing beneath the mighty citadel walls.
Wander through one of the gates (some with step access) and potter around the warren of medieval lanes with pretty shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and museums. Visit the castle, tour the ramparts and look out for events, re-enactments and festivities, especially during the French school holidays. Visit early in the morning or late into the evening to avoid the many day-trippers who come to see one of France’s most popular tourist destinations.
Cross the Aude River via the Pont Vieux bridge (1.5km) and spend time exploring Carcassonne’s charming Bastide de Saint Louis with more restaurants and shops. The Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday morning market takes place at Place Carnot, also home to terrace cafes and a picturesque fountain. The Canal du Midi is just north of this quarter, around 3km from the villa, where it’s wonderful to cycle along the tow paths or take a boat ride along part of France’s famous canal.
Trains depart Gare de Carcassonne (3km) to the attractive town of Castelnaudary, a perfect place for lunch out by the Canal du Midi, perhaps enjoying le cassoulet, and onwards to the handsome city of Toulouse. In the other direction, it’s around a 30-minute train ride to beautiful Narbonne with its gothic cathedral and you can even continue towards Port La Nouvelle and the Mediterranean.
It’s also worth hiring a car to make the most of this glorious part of southern France. Venture to the Languedoc wineries and vineyards, visit idyllic villages such as Limoux, Lagrasse and Minerve and discover some of the fascinating Cathar castles from Lastours to Montségur.
You can also drive to the Mediterranean within an hour whether wishing to experience the beauty around Gruissan-Plage or soak up the ambience of Leucate, a resort especially loved for its wind-based watersports and vast sandy beaches.

Region
Whilst most visitors flock to Carcassonne for its fortified citadel, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is so much to experience across the historic city and its beautiful surroundings.
It goes without saying that the great highlight of Carcassonne is Europe’s largest walled fortress with its warren of winding lanes with cafes and little shops alongside its impressive towers and ramparts – guided tours along the city walls can be arranged. It feels like a fairytale for young and old with knights in armour, horse-drawn carriage rides and fascinating museums.
Look out for festivities and events throughout the year, the most famous being July’s Festival de Carcassonne with cultural and musical events taking place across the city. What’s more, the Bastille Day fireworks are some of the most magnificent in France.
Beyond the citadel, cross the Aude River and soak up the vibrant ambience of Le Bastide de Saint-Louis, a bustling neighbourhood with its own rich heritage. Start at Place Carnot with its café terraces, impressive fountain and wonderful market three mornings or head straight to the gourmet stalls of Les Halles’ covered market. Dine out in atmospheric restaurants serving the best regional cuisine perhaps accompanied by a glass of Minervois, Corbières or other excellent wine from the vineyards surrounding the Cité de Carcassonne.
Then there’s the tranquility of the city's Le Canal du Midi just perfect to explore on foot, by bike or via boat. In one direction you can cycle along the canalside towpath to Castelnaudary, famed for its pretty marina and restaurants serving cassoulet. On another day head east towards Trèbes, Homps, Argens-Minervois and other picture-perfect wine villages across the Hérault’s Minerve region, the perfect trip out from your Carcassonne holiday home.

Best Suited For: All AgesStroll up the picturesque country lanes and within around 500m you will be standing below the ramparts of Europe’s largest medieval citadel.
As you enter inside, discover a maze of medieval lanes filled with enticing shops, cafes and restaurants. Visit the magnificent castle and tour the rampart walls, also look out for historic re-enactments and other festivities during the French school holidays.
A little road train connects the citadel to the main part of Carcassonne, Bastide de Saint Louis, where you will eventually come across Le Canal du Midi, perfect for cycling and walking along the tow paths and boat trips along France’s most famous canal. Back to the banks of the River Aude, discover a couple of parks with small playgrounds.
Just beyond the city, around a 10-minute drive away, find summer activities at Lac de la Cavayère such as watersports, a tree-top activity centre and an inflatable waterpark – always check opening hours/dates in advance. Another child-friendly attraction near Carcassonne is Le Parc Australien, home to kangaroos, wallabies and more, whilst there is a go-karting centre near the airport.
Further afield, tour the fascinating caves at Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine – the most adventurous of guests can even have a go at the accrobranche-style trail (aged 12+) or try out canoeing along the underground river (aged 10+).
For gentler pursuits, look out for walking routes and horse-riding across the nearby countryside as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Aude in Eaurizon.

Beautiful views
Beautiful views, modern and clean property with all the mod cons and fully equipped kitchen. Fantastic heated pool with 2 jacuzzis with lovely terraces and garden within walking distance to the castle.

Amazing scenery and immaculate house
Our Stay at Carcassonne was amazing. The house holds panoramic views covering the medieval city, vineyards & amazing scenery where you can sit back & enjoy from sunrise to sunset. The house itself is immaculate with ample space, facilities & all the amenities you could hope for. The location also means you are less than a 10 minute walk to the walled city which is full of shops & restaurants. The host is very welcoming providing some great recommendations & contacts within the local area which we used throughout our stay. Highly recommended.
-
The house itself is perfect
This place is amazing. The pictures are accurate in that there is plenty of room inside and out. We were a party of 13 (6 children) and at no point did we feel crowded or on top of each other. The pool and hot tubs are brilliant and the rest of the garden big enough for ball games. And it's 10 minutes at the very most (summer dawdling) to get to the city itself, it's beautiful. But the house itself is perfect and had everything that we could need and more (badminton, table tennis, petanque, the pool, 2 seating areas with TVs, tables inside and out, barbeques, laundry facilities...). And the owner is an absolute gentleman. He knew that we would have children with us so set a couple of the bedrooms up accordingly with single/bunk beds and that it was one of the party's birthday and welcomed us with flowers for her. Would recommend 100%.

Top class accommodation, views, and host
What a wonderful place in an excellent location, with fantastic views and top class accommodation. The host was excellent with great communication from our point of booking and when our flight was changed to Beziers Airport (100km from Carcassonne) the afternoon before travel, he stepped in and arranged a transfer back to Carcassonne and transport was waiting for us when we stepped out of the Airport. Our whole family had the most fantastic, relaxed holiday in a beautiful villa delivering everything it promised. Thank you.

We highly recommend
We had an excellent family stay at Villa Chatelain, the house and the facilities are magnificent. We made the most of the swimming pool and jacuzzis and the garden. We were 5 adults and 6 children and everyone found their place. The children were delighted to find many toys and board games. The welcome from the host was very warm and he was responsive to all questions asked and very accommodating regarding departure and arrival times. The welcome booklet is very practical and full of good addresses. We highly recommend this accommodation.

What a fantastic house
What a fantastic house, in a superb location, we had a wonderful week's holiday here. It is an easy walk into the citadel and a little further into the main town. The views are incredible on all sides, especially of the citadel of course but the surrounding countryside is also lovely. The house is spacious with a lovely garden, swimming pool and two jacuzzis. I would highly recommend this holiday rental.

Privileged location!
Stayed for a week with friends to visit Carcassonne and the region. Enjoyed the large, well equipped house. Great view due to its privileged location at the foot of the city and on the vineyards.

Wonderful
This place is wonderful. It’s a beautiful setting looking out over the countryside and with full panoramic view of the cite. The house itself is perfectly set up for a large family or group traveling together. And the host was super helpful and accommodating.

Gorgeous
Villa very well equipped with taste and great amenities: the living room well suited for a group, opening onto a magnificent terrace overlooking the swimming pool well stocked with sun loungers, lots of indoor and outdoor games for all, the 6 bedrooms are very comfortable, tastefully decorated, the view of the City (accessible on foot in 10m) is splendid. A cordial welcome, great organizational rigor: thank you!

Absolutely amazing
We were a party of 10 ladies and arrived at the beginning of October for a long weekend. The villa was absolutely amazing. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. The kitchen is particularly well equipped. the host was perfect, sending us lots of information prior to our arrival. We had lovely weather so we could take advantage of the outside space, pool, hot tub and sunbeds. We will definitely visit again.

Fantastic trip
We’ve just returned from a fantastic trip in Carcassonne, and this villa was the perfect place to stay! The villa is beautifully presented, and equipped with everything you could need and more! We travelled with two small children and great care has been given to ensuring their safety and needs are catered for - including security gates on the pool and stairs. The pool is a great size and perfect for the whole family. The location is superb, only a short walk to the castle. The host is wonderful and very accommodating! I couldn’t recommend his place highly enough. We will certainly be back!
-
A true gem
The house is a true marvel, new, large and spacious, well decorated, well equipped, unbeatable location, distributed over two perfectly habitable floors, everything out of 10! In addition to the fantastic properties of the house, the unconditional support for whatever we needed. He is very friendly and advised us very well on both domestic things and excursions in the area. We were a large group of 16 people and we were all very comfortable. There were beds for everyone. It is even better equipped for summer. I hope to return very soon.

The services are top of the range and everything is thought of to make your life easier. Every detail is thought of, from the layout of the house and its exteriors to the decoration, the household appliances, the heated swimming pool, the 2 jacuzzis, the pétanque court and so on. Several living spaces allow you to enjoy the sunshine throughout the day, ending with a magnificent sunset that will illuminate the city of Carcassonne. Thank you again for your welcome and your attention which made these moments with our friends unforgettable. We can't wait to come back and discover your second setting.
