Chateau Asturias, a castle in Languedoc-Roussillon, brings together medieval and Indonesian elements to create a refined home steeped in history. The dramatic raised stone swimming pool sits near a 12th century original wall, and a Zen-like garden and teak-wood poster beds will make you think of the island of Bali.
This chateau on the edge of Aragon, a pretty village with many amenities, is only a walk away from a four-star restaurant. In this part of the south of France, you’re near the rivers of the Pyrenees for canyoning or rafting, and an hour’s drive to the Mediterranean coast at La Franqui. Carcassonne, with its weekly markets and hillside medieval citadel, is even closer.
Elegantly restored, the Chateau Asturias has six luxury bedrooms that can sleep 12. The first floor bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling French doors to a long balcony, and several have private bathrooms. With a luxurious living room, library/media room and state of the art well-appointed kitchen, you can relax in style. Dine indoors or out with room for everyone at the table.
One of the most popular castles in the Oliver’s Travels collection, this gem in the south of France is only 10 km from the Carcassonne airport.
As mentioned in...

This is a historic home, and as such:
- It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
- Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Region
Whilst most visitors flock to Carcassonne for its fortified citadel, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is so much to experience across the historic city and its beautiful surroundings.
It goes without saying that the great highlight of Carcassonne is Europe’s largest walled fortress with its warren of winding lanes with cafes and little shops alongside its impressive towers and ramparts – guided tours along the city walls can be arranged. It feels like a fairytale for young and old with knights in armour, horse-drawn carriage rides and fascinating museums.
Look out for festivities and events throughout the year, the most famous being July’s Festival de Carcassonne with cultural and musical events taking place across the city. What’s more, the Bastille Day fireworks are some of the most magnificent in France.
Beyond the citadel, cross the Aude River and soak up the vibrant ambience of Le Bastide de Saint-Louis, a bustling neighbourhood with its own rich heritage. Start at Place Carnot with its café terraces, impressive fountain and wonderful market three mornings or head straight to the gourmet stalls of Les Halles’ covered market. Dine out in atmospheric restaurants serving the best regional cuisine perhaps accompanied by a glass of Minervois, Corbières or other excellent wine from the vineyards surrounding the Cité de Carcassonne.
Then there’s the tranquility of the city's Le Canal du Midi just perfect to explore on foot, by bike or via boat. In one direction you can cycle along the canalside towpath to Castelnaudary, famed for its pretty marina and restaurants serving cassoulet. On another day head east towards Trèbes, Homps, Argens-Minervois and other picture-perfect wine villages across the Hérault’s Minerve region, the perfect trip out from your Carcassonne holiday home.

Everything is truly amazing.
Everything is truly amazing. We love Chateau Asturias. Amazing spacious property for all our three generations. The lady who met us has been so helpful and of course Oliver's Travels who steered us through difficult situations…. wonderful. Everything here is first class and perfect.

Super welcome and Chateau just perfect.

Fabulous
WOW! What a fabulous place. We feel we have stepped back in time. The chateau has everything we need as a large family group of 11. The children are loving the pool and we are looking forward to exploring the area. The host who welcomed us is so helpful and the locals are super friendly.

8 longstanding friends had a great time at Chateau Asturias. The building is well equipped and the situation is peaceful. Don't be put off by the lack of parking on the premises as there is ample near by. The village has a very well stocked shop/bar where the owner speaks English and is very knowledgeable. The is also a first class restaurant in the village a stones throw from the Chateau. It does however shut out of season so best check if this is important to you. We had an amazing night out there.

A family holiday to remember
It was a family holiday to remember. We all had a great time and my daughter celebrated her 11th birthday. Ann made us a lovely cake and a great meal.

An extremely enjoyable stay!
The chateau certainly lived up to expectations and we all had an extremely enjoyable stay. It is well located in an attractive village and close to many points of interest. The weather was comfortably hot and we spent most of the time in and around the chateau.
Particular positives other than the generally high standards of comfort were the well equipped kitchen (which included a very welcome ice maker) and the very strong wi-fi connection. The La Bergerie restaurant, just a couple of minutes walk, was exceptional and we enjoyed both lunch and dinners there. The general store run by Sebastian has a very good local wine selection at reasonable prices. On Friday and Saturday evenings Sebastian offers a wide range of very good pizza from his mobile kitchen parked at the store. Sat outside the store and enjoyed both the pizzas and the local wine.
Anne, the locally based manager, was very helpful in suggesting wineries to visit and other points of interest. She also babysat one evening. -
Fabulous stay at fabulous chateau!
I cannot recommend this villa highly enough. It is in a beautiful little French town with stunning view of the surrounding countryside. The house is beautifully maintained with all the modern amenities in the kitchen, bathrooms, etc. The owners, Marc and Mei, are extremely friendly, and their local property manager Anne is lovely and helpful. Our group of 9 spent a wonderful week at the house and would love to go back.

We all have very happy memories of our stay in Chateau Asturias
We had a very good time at Chateau Asturias from July 26 – August 2. The space easily accommodated our party of 12. It was very generously appointed with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, plenty of spaces to sit around in. We loved the two long tables which were marvellous for meals inside or out. Very clean and fresh on our arrival. The views in all directions were delightful. The village was charming. There was plenty to and see in the environs. The tennis playing members of our party enjoyed the public courts, but whether that will remain the case for future visitors is up for question, as they are somewhat neglected. (One of the courts had saplings growing through the hard surface!) The swimming pool was a bit small – but difficult to see how it could be enlarged.
I would have really appreciated a brief history of the Chateau and also an account of the renovation work that was done by M. and Mme Mei – it was such an imaginative conversion.
If I were to mention any improvements I would have liked, they are quite mundane:
i It would have been useful to have a floor mop to wipe over the kitchen floor
ii A clothes line for drying clothes: could be discrete and easily put away, but it is quite unnecessary to run a drying machine when there is so much lovely sunshine
iii There was from time to time the unmistakable whiff of French plumbing
iv Anne met us on arrival and was very charming. Unfortunately my husband was not feeling well at that point and had to go straight to bed. Anne gave all instructions to our 15 year old grand-daughter. By the time I came downstairs she had gone. Fortunately grand-daughter is a bright girl and as far as I know passed on all the messages, but I thought a check-up call from Ann to see if all was ok would not have come amiss.
That said – we all have very happy memories of our stay in Chateau Asturias.

Wonderful and magical place
Such a wonderful and magical place to spend a week. Our family gathered from many different places, Virginia, Florida, California and a semester spent in Rowen, France.
Putting our toes in the Mediterranean, Climbing the heights of Cathar Castles, seeing the wonders of Toulouse, Cathar and Albie, biking the countryside around Minerve and walking
right out our door to wander the ridges and valleys right here in Aragon.
Thank you, Thank you. -

Perfect space for a large group
Thank you for a lovely week at Chateau Asturias.
The whole family gathered here (7 adults, 4 children) to celebrate Lyn & John Egsgards 40th Wedding Anniversay and it was a trip to be remembered.
The Chateau itself was the perfect space for a large group - lots of room to spread out but yet accommodated meals and time together.
The kids enjoyed the pool and the garden.
We got croissants most mornings and had a lovely meal (wine& food pairings) at Le Bergerie.
The rest of our dinners were prepared by Nick (and Suzette & Olly) and were absolutely great!
We had fun exploring what the area had to offer and had a lovely time spending time with family.
Many thanks for a wonderful week, The Egsgard family (Jennifer, Ashvin, Alexander, Zachary, Kristina Erick, Niel, Rowan, Walker, Lyn, John).

Great Holiday, in spite of..
Terrific individual property in lovely village setting. for the money paid tho, the service from the local management team was poor and the attention to detail that could have made this a very special holiday was missing. No meet and greet, not cleaned properly for our arrival, no information at all on Chateau and its amenities, no info on local area for practical purpose or leisure purposes (not even location of nearest Doctor etc). Oven and Fridge Freezer need attention, light bulbs blown and not changed, dirty windows. HOWEVER, the property and location are fantastic and we had a great holiday. Just need to get the little things right
