Region

The beautiful market town of Uzès is somewhat of a secret gem in southern France. Staying close to Uzès allows you to embrace the region’s traditional ambience, rich heritage, artistic vibe and wonderful cuisine, not to mention the idyllic surroundings of medieval villages, forests, olive groves and Côte du Rhône vineyards.

There’s no better place to start off than Place aux Herbes in the heart of Uzès with its café and restaurant terraces, shady plane trees and historic ambience – it is said to be one of the most beautiful squares in southern France. It is also home to a fantastic market on a Wednesday and Saturday morning when traders take over Uzès’ iconic main square to showcase a wealth of delightful products. This is the perfect opportunity to buy specialities of the region – look out for pélardon goats cheese from the mountains, Cévennes honey, sweet onions, local olive oil, cod brandade de Nîmes, Camargue rice as well as so many seasonal fruit and vegetables. The market on Place aux Herbes dates back to the 13th century.

Uzès is also so loved for its historic lanes, elegant architecture, art galleries, inviting shops and excellent restaurants. Admire Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit d'Uzès and its unique round bell tower, visit the impressive Duché d’Uzès, then climb to the top of the medieval garden’s Tour du Roi for panoramic vistas. For a change of scene, just outside the town is La vallée de l'Eure for walking and hiking in glorious nature.

Of course, another great highlight of this region is the Pont du Gard, a grand symbol of Roman engineering and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a guided tour of this magnificent monument, follow the walking trail by the river, canoe beneath the aqueduct and enjoy atmospheric light shows on summer evenings.

Spend time pottering around picturesque French villages such as perched La Roque-sur-Cèze surrounded by vineyards, authentic Saint-Victor-la-Coste with its fortified château ruins and tiny Pouzilhac with its old ochre houses and cobblestone streets. Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is just north of Uzès, the ceramics capital of France and home to enchanting lanes, pottery studios, galleries and La Musée de la Poterie Méditerranéenne.

Meanwhile, discover the many wineries and vineyards close to Uzès, part of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine growing region. From family-run estates and organic vineyards to large cooperatives, learn all about the great wines of the Pays d’Uzès and Côtes du Rhône.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

For families with toddlers and young children, it is necessary to monitor them as the steps in the courtyard are steep.

In this glorious part of southern France there are lots of activities to appeal to a variety of ages. There are many activities to do around the village and the nearby countryside is perfect for long walks.

In nearby Uzès you can climb to the top of the historic Bermonde Tower for amazing views of the town and surrounding countryside. Youngsters may also love the Musée du Bonbon, a museum owned by Haribo which gives you a great insight into the making of their famous gummy bears.

There are plenty of great places to canoe along the Gard river – take an excursion in the Gorges du Gardon, some of which include canoeing as far as the famous Pont du Gard. There are also plenty of places to have a picnic along the banks of the river whilst those seeking adrenalin fuelled activities can find rock-climbing and challenging mountain bike trails in the Gorges du Gardon nature reserve.

  • Great Villa in Central Location

    on 20/06/2017

We had a very enjoyable stay in this villa. It is a very interesting old stone villa with all of the modern conveniences. We were able to drive from the villa to many tourist attractions in the area. We were sad to leave after two weeks but will return one day.

  • Just beautiful!

    on 29/08/2016

a fantastic place with amazing interiors - we would go anytime again. The only disturbance was the waterpump which was espcially during the night too loud and disturbing our sleep.

  • Magical place

    on 05/08/2016

My husband and I love to travel, and we some times crave a different kind of luxury than a 5-start hotel. This year we decided to visit La Capelle et Masmolene

Have you ever watched a movie and thought to yourself “could this place be real”? If you ever wondered about a romance of a small village in the heart of France where everyone knows one another and life slows down in a storybook setting, La Maison du Sud is where you should go.

I can still feel the breeze in the small terrace off the kitchen, French music playing in the background as I am cutting the fresh baguette delivered by the local bakery every morning. Yes, the bakery leaves the bread in a bag behind your door.

I still can’t believe the beauty in this house at every corner. From the antique island in the kitchen, the copper pots hanging on the wall, the bench under it with the Provencal basket sitting on top , to the unique master suite, it screamed romance, elegance, and history.

I thought to myself writing a simple review wouldn’t do justice to this magical house, the village and its surroundings, so I need to tell you about the feel of this place.

Yes it is clean, yes it is comfortable, yes it has WIFI and all the conveniences we all need and are uses to, but it has something much more, it has a heart. When you walk through the house you feel the love and attention that gives the house its soul. Every room tells a story, every time I would go back to reality the house would pull me back to a simpler and more beautiful time. This time I wasn’t watching the movie, I was in it.

The master suite took my breath away every time I walked in: the headboard, the open shower in the middle of the room, the sink carved out of a peace of rock, the curtains flowing with the breeze, every piece of furniture so unexpected and yet it fit the purpose perfectly. All the modern conveniences are there but they are so smartly hidden as to not disturb the peace.

Each room is designed uniquely and differently than the next and yet there is harmony you can touch. The small pool on a hot day is perfect. The white hydrangeas of the provincial garden smile at you every morning. From the windows in the master bedroom you see the rooftops of the village that blends in with the vineyard in the background. The view on the left pulls you to pages of a storybook; church bells, the small square of the village and the beautiful castle backdrop let you sink deep in your own little fairytale.

Every item and every part of the house pays homage to the love the owner has felt for her house. You just want to be a part of it and buy into the love.
Let’s not forget your kind and smiley neighbors, every late afternoon or as soon as it cools down ladies of the village come together in front of one of their beautiful stone houses to celebrate another day gone by; I giggled inside every time.

Do I think you should stay at La Maison du Sud? If you want an authentic experience with a dust of magic, ABSOLUTELY YES!
