Overview
In the heart of a Languedoc wine-village close to Pézenas, this grand Maison De Maître offers charm, character and the most impressive features set in magnificently landscaped gardens with a private swimming pool.
Indeed, it will feel like a privilege to stay in such a historic home dating back to the 19th century. With seven attractive bedrooms alongside welcoming living spaces, this house is filled with so many original features such as elegant high ceilings, tiled flooring and intricate design. Traditionally furnished with comfort in mind, there’s an air of old-fashioned romance whether it’s the sweet fireplaces, beautiful French windows or juliet-style wrought iron balconies.
Yet there are so many brilliant additions that you may not expect, like the superb sauna and massage area in the stone annexe, a fantastic media room with workstations and of course the glistening swimming pool surrounded by a picturesque private terrace and summer kitchen with barbecue.
The gardens are just as outstanding with vast landscaped grounds, so surprising for a village home, towering trees, a pretty pagoda, lovely terraces for morning coffee or al-fresco meals and a relaxing Moroccan courtyard. It feels like a Languedoc paradise yet so close to everything this glorious region has to offer.
Wander into the heart of the village to admire the beautiful church before picking up your morning croissants or perhaps visit one of the wineries, after all there are so many to choose from in the surrounding area with its landscapes of vineyards and wine villages.
Just a short drive away, Pézenas is one of southern France’s most gorgeous towns with exquisite architecture and narrow cobbled lanes filled with little shops and delightful places to eat as well as the historic 14th century market on a Saturday morning, one of the best of the region. See what’s on at the L'Illustre Théâtre and follow in the steps of Molière in the town he loved so much.
Discover the Mediterranean coast with the beaches around Cap d’Agde about half an hour away, with endless summer activities such as watersports and amusement parks. Enjoy oysters from the Étang de Thau in Mèze or spend quieter time by the tranquil Lac du Salagou with hiking and cycling trails as well as lakeside beaches and more watersports.
Béziers, Montpellier and even the magnificent city of Carcassonne are also waiting to be explored for yet more exciting days out. That said, you may just choose to spend your time unwinding in your huge garden or by the wonderful swimming pool of your handsome holiday home.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison MoliereMaison Molière is located in a typical Hérault wine village in Languedoc-Roussillon, a short drive from the historic town of Pézenas and just over half an hour from the Mediterranean coast.
The village itself is a delight with characterful houses and a beautiful church in the centre as well as simple yet useful amenities such as a bakery and tabac. Wine-lovers will have the opportunity to visit wineries here and in neighbouring villages as well as arrange local vineyard tours.
Pézenas (8km) is a jewel of the region, an exquisite town full of history with elegant architecture, charming antique shops and little art galleries. Wander around the narrow lanes coming across pretty shops and some excellent places to eat. Make sure you experience the exceptional market on a Saturday morning which dates back to the 14th century. Follow in Molière’s footsteps in the town he loved so much and visit the famous L'Illustre Théâtre.
Usually in July and August Pézenas hosts the atmospheric ‘Les Estivales’ on a Friday evening with night markets across the town serving delicious food and lots of local wine alongside live music.
Heading south, enjoying Bouzigues oysters from the nearby Étang de Thau with local white wine is a must and you can take a boat trip out to see the fascinating oyster beds. Mèze (25km) is a lively town on the lagoon with markets, festivities and even some watersports. Look out for jousting tournaments in the height of the summer, a great tradition of this region.
It’s just over half an hour from the Mediterranean coast with the beaches around Cap d’Agde or, a little further, Marseillan Plage and Sète. There is a great range of water-based activities in the summer as well as amusement parks, water parks and other family-friendly attractions.
Heading inland, Lac du Salagou (25km) is a tranquil area where you can paddle-board, kayak or wind-surf on the lake as well as follow walking, hiking and mountain biking trails. Indeed, Languedoc-Roussillon is a glorious region for walking and horse-riding, whether through the wild garrigue, vineyards and olive groves or between enchanting hilltop wine villages. Canoeing along the River Orb is another way to appreciate the area’s natural beauty.
Other brilliant days out include a trip to the exciting town of Béziers, a visit to the grand city of Montpellier or driving to the stunning village of Saint Guilhem le Désert (45km), a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Carcassonne (110km) is another remarkable place around ninety minutes by car or spend time canoeing or picnicking at the incredible Pont du Gard (144km), close to the Roman city of Nîmes.

Region
Languedoc-Roussillon is one of those areas of France where you can feel like you’re totally cut off from the rest of the country. Commercial tourism has been very slow to capitalise on the region, meaning you can still enjoy a slice of authentic French rural life at its finest. A mixture of landscapes also makes it a great place to visit, with a good stretch of coastline offering a totally different experience to more bucolic interiors. Whatever you’re looking for, our range of villas and chateaux in Languedoc means you can get exactly the kind of holiday you want with accommodation that’s perfectly tailored to you, your friends and your family.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesIn the heart of a characterful Hérault village, it’s lovely to be able to wander out in the morning to fetch freshly baked bread and croissants for everyone from the local boulangerie.
You are also close to the historic town of Pézenas, just 8km away, which is sure to enchant all ages with its patisseries, ice-cream stores, little antique shops and atmospheric market on a Saturday morning.
If exploring local villages and towns becomes a little too much then the beach is never too far away with Cap d’Agde just over a 30-minute drive away whilst Marseillan Plage and Sète are just a little further. There are all sorts of family-friendly attractions along this part of the Mediterranean coastline in the summer such as amusement and water parks, a range of watersports, mini-golf, trampolines, volleyball pitches and more.
Dino World in Cap d’Agde is one of the theme parks with a great range of activities whilst young dinosaur lovers may also appreciate the Musée des Dinosaures, perhaps combined with a visit to the charming wine village of Montignac.
In more tranquil surroundings, there are watersports on the beautiful Lac du Salagou, around half an hour inland, as well as lovely walking trails, lakeside beaches and areas ideal for mountain biking.
Canoeing along the River Orb in Cessenon-sur-Orb or Béziers is also popular or discover some of the water-based activities on the Étang de Thau in Mèze.

A superb stay
All in all, a superb stay. The house was a perfect home for our extended family and the enormous grounds, spacious rooms and comprehensive amenities were simply wonderful. The pool is stunning but the unexpected best features are the outdoor kitchen, where we had some memorable family meals, the pétanque court and, sadly, the “work barn” for anyone who can’t disconnect completely. Caux is charming and quiet and the surrounding countryside is stunning. For wine tastings we recommend Domaine l’Unique!

A Dream House
A dream house: beautiful, well-equipped, wonderful facilities and set in a lovely and lively village with two boulangeries. It was probably the most expensive house we have ever rented but our group of 13 of all ages had a wonderful time.
