Pool Villa/House
Great Value
Ideal for Kids Walk to Village Laptop Friendly Workspace Parking Space

Surrounded by landscapes of fields, vines and distant mountains, this characterful house enjoys an elevated setting and glorious views on the edge of a quiet Gard village.

Gaze at the valley views from the upper terrace as you relax by the outdoor lounge with a coffee or glass of wine from nearby vineyards. The kitchen terrace is an attractive spot for breakfast whilst stone steps lead down to the swimming pool. Sit back by the poolside summer kitchen with its Nespresso machine and fridge to keep your drinks cool, a fine place for al-fresco dining with family and friends.

Inside the beautiful stone house, watch Netflix in the charming lounge or challenge a loved one to a game of pool before preparing delicious meals in the sleek kitchen making the most of the wonderful produce from local markets. Rest your head in one of the five bedrooms, four of which feature air-conditioning and three with an en suite bathroom. Décor is simple and pretty with a relaxing ambience throughout this welcoming blue-shuttered home.

It's around a 5-10 minute walk to the little village, home to old houses, a picturesque church and village square where locals play boules. There’s a bistro serving home-cooked food and good wine open a few days a week or drive to nearby Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie and Úzes for more atmospheric places to eat.
Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is indeed a delight to explore with its cobbled lanes, art galleries and around 40 ceramic studios, home to the Terralha Ceramic Art Festival in July. Meanwhile, the exquisite medieval town of Úzes will enchant you with its rich heritage and superb twice-weekly market. Look out for extra virgin olive oil, chestnuts, asparagus, olives and honey as well as goat’s cheese and sweet onions from the Cévennes.

Canoe beneath the Roman Pont du Gard just a 20-minute drive away, visit the wineries of Úzes and the Rhône valley, seek antique treasures in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and spend the day in the historic cities of Avignon and Nimes. A little further afield, follow Van Gogh’s footsteps in St-Rémy or Arles, discover the captivating Camargue or venture into the Cévennes mountains for yet more magnificent scenery of southern France. Another must visit is the sand dunes and wide expansive beach at Espiguette in the Camargue - 1 hour 15 minutes from the house.

In the Gard department of southern France, only 12km from the beautiful town of Uzès, Mas de la Coste is on the edge of a quiet village with wonderful views and idyllic sun sets. Around the village are landscapes of fields, vineyards and distant mountains.

Strolling past neighbouring houses and countryside (no pavement), you can reach the heart of the village in just over a 10-minute walk, home to a pretty church, attractive houses and shady trees. Next to the mairie, a café-bistro is open for lunch and some evening meals (closed certain days, depending on the time of year).

There are further restaurants and a supermarket in Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie (8.5km), a characterful little town known for its ceramics and a joy to explore – there are around 40 workshops alongside little art galleries and boutiques. The interesting Musée de la Poterie Méditerranéenne is worth a visit, housed inside a 16th century oil mill. The European Ceramic Art Festival, Terralha, takes place annually in July.

Medieval Uzès is an exquisite town to spend time in, especially on a Wednesday and Saturday morning when the market takes place beneath the plane trees on historic Place aux Herbes. Delicious seasonal products to look out for include olive oil, olives, asparagus, honey, chestnuts, sweet onions, Pélardon goat’s cheese from the Cévennes and even rice from the Camargue. Discover elegant restaurants in the historic centre alongside atmospheric pavement cafes in picturesque surroundings.

Wine connoisseurs will be keen to visit local wineries around Úzes as well as Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards near Laudun-l'Ardoise (16km), Lirac (20km) and Tavel (17km). Crossing over the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (35km) is also a short distance away, located between historic Orange and Avignon.

Of course, Avignon (33km) is another great day out with its two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Le Pont d’Avignon and Le Palais des Papes. Meanwhile, antique lovers will adore Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (32km) which hosts one of the most famous weekly brocantes in southern France.

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, Le Pont du Gard (18km) is a must for canoeing/kayaking enthusiasts or simply enjoy a picnic and paddle by the riverside in this magnificent setting. Roman history enthusiasts should also consider spending the day in the city of Nîmes (37km) visiting the exceptionally preserved monuments such as Maison Carrée and Arènes de Nîmes.

Region

The beautiful market town of Uzès is somewhat of a secret gem in southern France. Staying close to Uzès allows you to embrace the region’s traditional ambience, rich heritage, artistic vibe and wonderful cuisine, not to mention the idyllic surroundings of medieval villages, forests, olive groves and Côte du Rhône vineyards.

There’s no better place to start off than Place aux Herbes in the heart of Uzès with its café and restaurant terraces, shady plane trees and historic ambience – it is said to be one of the most beautiful squares in southern France. It is also home to a fantastic market on a Wednesday and Saturday morning when traders take over Uzès’ iconic main square to showcase a wealth of delightful products. This is the perfect opportunity to buy specialities of the region – look out for pélardon goats cheese from the mountains, Cévennes honey, sweet onions, local olive oil, cod brandade de Nîmes, Camargue rice as well as so many seasonal fruit and vegetables. The market on Place aux Herbes dates back to the 13th century.

Uzès is also so loved for its historic lanes, elegant architecture, art galleries, inviting shops and excellent restaurants. Admire Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit d'Uzès and its unique round bell tower, visit the impressive Duché d’Uzès, then climb to the top of the medieval garden’s Tour du Roi for panoramic vistas. For a change of scene, just outside the town is La vallée de l'Eure for walking and hiking in glorious nature.

Of course, another great highlight of this region is the Pont du Gard, a grand symbol of Roman engineering and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a guided tour of this magnificent monument, follow the walking trail by the river, canoe beneath the aqueduct and enjoy atmospheric light shows on summer evenings.

Spend time pottering around picturesque French villages such as perched La Roque-sur-Cèze surrounded by vineyards, authentic Saint-Victor-la-Coste with its fortified château ruins and tiny Pouzilhac with its old ochre houses and cobblestone streets. Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is just north of Uzès, the ceramics capital of France and home to enchanting lanes, pottery studios, galleries and La Musée de la Poterie Méditerranéenne.

Meanwhile, discover the many wineries and vineyards close to Uzès, part of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine growing region. From family-run estates and organic vineyards to large cooperatives, learn all about the great wines of the Pays d’Uzès and Côtes du Rhône.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property? Since 2019

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
We loved the position of the property, slightly elevated at the edge of a village and the open views  across surrounding fields and the incredible sunsets we look towards.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It has been owned by 2 previous British families – one of whom was a French teacher and another of whom would drive down each summer in his Bentley!

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
We had a French philosopher and TV star and his wife (who was the ex-partner of a French president)!

For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…

Must do?

  • Visit Le Pont du Gard
  • Go to the Wednesday or Saturday market in Uzès – go early and park in the car park on the left as you approach Uzès – just past the tennis courts. This saves you going into the one-way system in Uzès and makes for a quick exit once you are done.
  • Go for a wine tasting to La Panèry – a 5 minute drive from the house – go through La Capelle heading towards Pouzilhac and it’s on the main road.

Must eat?

  • The restaurant ‘Ten’ in Uzès and the Creperie La Bolée as well as Le Vieux Café for a classic reasonably priced bistro meal or a pre or after dinner drink.
  • Visit La Nougatine bakery in Uzès which Rick Stein featured in his show ‘Secret France’
  • Eat some Fougasse (local speciality flavoured bread) from the best bakery in France, ‘La Fougasse d’Uzès’ 10 Rue Jacques d'Uzès, 30700 Uzès.
  • Order your daily baguettes, pains au chocolat, pain au raisin and croissants from the baker who delivers (not Sunday or Monday) by calling +33 4 66 22 25 84.  He won’t pick up but leave a message and he arrives the following morning, usually around 9.30-10 am. Payment is by cash.
  • Try the bakers near the big car park in St Quentin la Pôterie called ‘Le Fournil d’Uzège’ Excellent range of bakery products.
  • Visit the café ‘Le CapMas’ above the Mairie in La Capelle et Masmolène for good value French cooking and/or a drink. Open most days in the summer and some days all year round.

Must see?

  • The Palais des Papes at Avignon
  • The Arènes at Nimes
  • The back streets in Uzès

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
People are very friendly and keen to welcome the many international people who both live in and visit this area and respond well to attempts to speak French (whilst also being happy to speak English).

Our stay at this wonderful villa in Provence was truly memorable. It was in the perfect position to visit the surrounding countryside and villages and ideally placed with views over the picturesque Valley. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was very welcome during the heat wave as was the swimming pool where we spent most of our time. Would love to visit again and appreciate the great communication and support from our host.

  • We would definitely recommend this house!
