Enjoy morning croissants from the local boulangerie accompanied by good coffee as you sit out in your courtyard garden overlooking the swimming pool. This beautiful historic house is in the heart of a medieval Gard village just a 5-minute drive from Le Pont du Gard, one of France’s most visited destinations.

So much care has been taken when restoring this farmhouse and barn to ensure as many original features could be retained. The high-ceilinged living and dining room is so inviting with arched windows opening out to the garden terrace whilst the elegant kitchen is a chef’s dream with its kitchen island and high-end appliances.

Each of the five bedrooms has a well-appointed en suite or private bathroom, making this such a fine holiday home for a group of friends or extended family. Up to 10 guests can sleep here (plus four additional small children) across five bedrooms with queen or king-sized doubles (two of which can be split as twin beds for flexibility).

The shaded terrace is the perfect spot for al-fresco meals and there is outdoor seating ideal for peaceful reading or a chilled evening glass of wine. There are sun loungers placed near the swimming pool, so plenty of opportunities to relax within the courtyard garden.

You will be living amongst locals in the medieval village with its bakery, well-stocked grocery store, Farmer’s market and a handful of places to eat (a high-end restaurant, pizzeria and a bar serving good local dishes). You can buy wine from the local cooperative or nearby vineyards – after all, this is the heart of the Côtes du Rhône wine region.

How fantastic to be just a 5-minute drive to Le Pont du Gard, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a picnic to the river’s edge as you admire the aqueduct’s magnificence whilst kayaking is another amazing experience. There’s an interesting museum here and in the summer months the bridge is magically lit up in the evening (with light and sound shows in July/August).

Elsewhere, there is so much to discover for all ages. Start off in the enchanting town of Uzès with its excellent restaurants and picturesque twice-weekly market beneath the plane trees. Avignon and Nimes are other wonderful days out, especially for history lovers, or you may simply prefer to potter around charming villages dotted across the rolling landscapes, stopping off at delightful restaurants and local wineries of course!

In the heart of the Côtes du Rhône wine region, Mas de l’Ormarins is a charming village house just a 5-minute drive from Le Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of France’s most visited destinations.

Fly into Nîmes or Avignon Airports, both just over half an hour away, or take the fast train from Paris to Gare d’Avignon TGV or Nimes Pont-du-Gard (both stations are less than three hours from Paris via TGV).

Here you are in the heart of a bustling and authentic little village with a high-end restaurant, pizzeria and a bar selling good local food as well as shops within walking distance including the all-important bakery, well-stocked grocery store and a Farmer's market three mornings a week. Stroll along the medieval lanes as you come across the pretty clocktower and 19th century washhouses, then follow the nature trail to admire the quarries just north of the village that date back to Roman times. Look out for summer festivities and events including a regional music festival in July and August’s traditional bull-run!

A car is essential to be able to fully explore the region although cycling is popular here – there is a fantastic route between Remoulins and Uzès that passes through the village. Bike hire (including electric options) can be arranged in advance.

Le Pont du Gard (3km) is one of the great highlights of the region, standing proudly by the banks of the Gardon River. Visit the Musée du Pont du Gard or simply head down to the river’s edge for paddling and picnics – in the summer months the aqueduct is beautifully lit up in the evening alongside light and sound shows in July and August. Canoeing and kayaking by the historic monument is an amazing experience.

Elsewhere, spend time in the gorgeous town of Uzès (12km) with its picturesque twice-weekly market which takes place beneath the plane trees on Place aux Herbes. The historic centre will enchant you whilst Uzès is also loved for its gastronomy. It goes without saying that Nimes (33km) and Avignon (27km) are other wonderful days out with their rich historic heritage whilst Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (27km) hosts one of southern France’s most famous weekly flea markets.

Meanwhile, visit the highly regarded vineyards of the Côtes-du-Rhône wine region – from the wineries of Tavel (19km) and Lirac (22km) on this side of the Rhône river to the wine village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (40km). The Duché d'Uzès and Coteaux du Pont du Gard are other local wine appellations to try during your stay.

A little further afield, visit the art galleries of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (44km) and Arles (45km) or venture into the captivating landscapes of the Camargue, even as far as historic Aigues-Morte (68km) and the Mediterranean beaches of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (75km).

Region

The beautiful market town of Uzès is somewhat of a secret gem in southern France. Staying close to Uzès allows you to embrace the region’s traditional ambience, rich heritage, artistic vibe and wonderful cuisine, not to mention the idyllic surroundings of medieval villages, forests, olive groves and Côte du Rhône vineyards.

There’s no better place to start off than Place aux Herbes in the heart of Uzès with its café and restaurant terraces, shady plane trees and historic ambience – it is said to be one of the most beautiful squares in southern France. It is also home to a fantastic market on a Wednesday and Saturday morning when traders take over Uzès’ iconic main square to showcase a wealth of delightful products. This is the perfect opportunity to buy specialities of the region – look out for pélardon goats cheese from the mountains, Cévennes honey, sweet onions, local olive oil, cod brandade de Nîmes, Camargue rice as well as so many seasonal fruit and vegetables. The market on Place aux Herbes dates back to the 13th century.

Uzès is also so loved for its historic lanes, elegant architecture, art galleries, inviting shops and excellent restaurants. Admire Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit d'Uzès and its unique round bell tower, visit the impressive Duché d’Uzès, then climb to the top of the medieval garden’s Tour du Roi for panoramic vistas. For a change of scene, just outside the town is La vallée de l'Eure for walking and hiking in glorious nature.

Of course, another great highlight of this region is the Pont du Gard, a grand symbol of Roman engineering and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a guided tour of this magnificent monument, follow the walking trail by the river, canoe beneath the aqueduct and enjoy atmospheric light shows on summer evenings.

Spend time pottering around picturesque French villages such as perched La Roque-sur-Cèze surrounded by vineyards, authentic Saint-Victor-la-Coste with its fortified château ruins and tiny Pouzilhac with its old ochre houses and cobblestone streets. Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is just north of Uzès, the ceramics capital of France and home to enchanting lanes, pottery studios, galleries and La Musée de la Poterie Méditerranéenne.

Meanwhile, discover the many wineries and vineyards close to Uzès, part of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine growing region. From family-run estates and organic vineyards to large cooperatives, learn all about the great wines of the Pays d’Uzès and Côtes du Rhône.

Families are welcome at this characterful village house – there is table tennis, board games and a DVD player to keep all ages entertained whilst the swimming pool is a delight outside. Stroll to the boulangerie in the morning to fetch your morning croissants and fresh bread to enjoy in the courtyard garden – a great way for youngsters to practice their French.

Of course, the close proximity of Le Pont du Gard is a great highlight of this region. The aqueduct is spectacularly lit up in the evening on summer evenings and look out for the sound and light show in July and August! Prepare a picnic to enjoy by the river’s edge on the rocky summer beaches, follow the footpaths along both sides of the river and enjoy the interactive Ludo space designed for children aged 5-12. Kayaking and canoeing is another popular activity here.

Keen cycling families note that bike hire can be arranged – there is a lovely cycling trail all the way to Uzès that passes through the village. Just outside Uzès there is the charming Musée 1900 and the Haribo Candy Museum, a good option for a rainy day perhaps! Owner Profile

When did you become the owner?
The house belongs to my sister and I which we bought in late 2008 and renovated in 2009. We started renting on a small scale in 2010.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It was apparently used as a silkworm farm (in the barn loft) but when the silk industry collapsed it became a working farm with sheep, pigs and chickens. The original drinking crib and well is still in the garden. The sheep spent the cold months in the barn at night.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Yes, a few but we consider all our guests to be of equal importance.

For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…

Must do?
- A visit to the Pont du Gard Roman Aqueduct and the Museum there. It is a World Heritage Site and it is right there on your doorstep!
- Must eat?
- Asparagus in season, cherries and apricots in season, all available right from the farmers door in the Village. Also, oysters in season, and the bread from the Bakery is sublime. All the fresh food in the region is wonderful. The area is known for Rosé wines, so those are a must try and then the Cote du Rhône area is a stone’s throw away, not to mention Chateauneuf du Pape which is a mere 30 minutes drive from the house.

Must see?
- Uzes, the first Duchy Town of France is literally next door. The Duke d’Uzes lives in the town with his Palace right in the centre. The town has been restored most beautifully and it is an experience to wander through the winding streets of the old part of town. The Saturday morning market in Uzes is a must do for anyone visiting. This market is famous in the area and people come from far and wide to be there.
- Apart from Uzes, the area is rich in Roman History, so a visit to Avignon and the Popes Palace, the Roman amphitheatres in Arles, Nimes and Orange are a must.
- Aigues Mortes (the walled town) is definitely worth a visit.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
- The Gard region of France is a well- kept secret. It is not overrun by tourists like Provence which is just next door over the Rhone River. All these places are easily visited on day trips from the house.
- The village is an authentic working village meaning you can buy your fresh produce directly from the farmers market on the village square three times a week. You will see horses and tractors going about their business. While you will come across fellow tourists, there are just as many locals using the village restaurants, tapas bar/music venue, bakery and epicerie.

  • Best ever French experience

    on 24/06/2023

Mas de L'Ormarins in Vers Pont du Gard was the perfect choice for friends and family to gather for a special French experience. The house is warm, welcoming and beautifully furnished and 6 couples were able to enjoy their own space and bathroom. Chef’s kitchen which overlooked the pool area was quintessentially Provence. The village the perfect size to immerse oneself into village life - boulangerie, grocers, markets and two restaurants/cafes. the owner was incredibly prompt and concise with communication and even arranged for some Pétanque sets to be delivered so we could play down at the village square. Thank you for such a memorable experience.

  • Warm and inviting home

    on 30/09/2022

We could not have enjoyed our stay more. The home is beautifully decorated, comfortable, everyone had a private ensuite and a luxurious bedroom. Everything was well thought through in the kitchen, dining room and entertainment space. Thank you for an exceptional week in your very special home.

  • A beautifully restored property in a charming village

    on 04/09/2017

Our extended family group was very comfortable at Mas de L'Ormarins. We were a group of nine, three generations, and there was plenty of room for all. The luxury of nicely appointed bathrooms in each bedroom cannot be overstated! The kitchen was roomy and well stocked. The property has been beautifully restored, with great attention to detail and comfort. Our stay began with a delicious catered meal, poolside, and our biggest challenge was choosing how to spend our time, when so much beckoned. A half day cooking class at Le Pistou in Uzès was a wonderful and delicious activity!
