Chateau Anais is an outstanding ‘Folie Nantaise’ completed in the 19th century, regally set at the crown of 6 hectares of private parklands, dotted with mature trees, overlooking a quaint pond, rolling grass meadows and vineyards which lead down to the river La Sevre. Just 15 minutes south of Nantes, you are perfectly positioned to relax and enjoy the quiet countryside but also to explore all the wonderful farmers markets, galleries, museums and boutiques that the town has to offer.

Whether serviced or self-catered, Chateau Anais is a charming rental, operating as a weekly let during the high season and a B&B in the low season. Regardless of the season, you will find a consistently warm and welcoming ambience across 7 spacious bedrooms, 6 with en-suite rooms. The décor creates an air of sophistication that is timeless, whether relaxing in the cosy lounge, or exploring the library complete with indoor games and honesty bar.

Guests will delight in whiling away the days in a private heated swimming pool, exploring the surrounding gardens or taking in the picturesque views from the balcony over a glass of the local cabernet. Without doubt this is the ideal setting to stage an unforgettable event or family gathering that will last forever in the memories of all those who attend.

The local village of La Haie-Fouassiere is just a short distance from the chateau. There are two bakeries, a butcher, a pub, restaurant and there is a small fresh food market on Wednesday mornings with fresh fruit and veg, fish, meat vendors and the best fromagerie (cheese producer) in the area.

The Italian-esque town of Clisson with its beautiful architecture and imposing ruins, is only 14 km away and offers plenty of shops, restaurants, sights, music events and charming parks on the banks of the river where you can enjoy a picnic lunch or take advantage of the many water activities on offer. There are also fantastic markets that fill the town centre on Friday mornings.

Nantes, a 15min train ride away, is known as a cultural hub of France. Visit the impressive Château des Ducs de Bretagne and wind your way through the streets of Nantes' old town to take in the sights and explore all the museums, churches and cathedrals, art galleries, and specialty boutiques. Foodies will be spoilt for choice with restaurants and quirky bars, and those hungry for culture will surely be satisfied with the city's vibrant live music scene and full calendar of events. For a truly unusual holiday experience while in the city, be sure to head over to Île de Nantes to visit Les Machines de l'Île and take a ride on the 12m high mechanical elephant.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Teens

There is a beautiful grassy area at the rear of the château, overlooked by the terrace, a perfect spot for parents to supervise while the kids play. Children can go on nature scavenger hunts around the grounds, pick fruit from the orchard (if in season) and if they're quiet enough... watch the red squirrels in the mornings.

The play room has a chest of toys and games for the little ones, and for the older kids there are cards and board games, as well as a small collection of DVDs.

Nearby, Les Machines de l'Île (22km) is definitely worth a visit. This is a fascinating theme park and museum in which the family can explore an array of giant machine animals.

A must see is the Jardin des Plantes (21km), one of the best in France, with 7 hectares of green space, more than 10,000 species, and greenhouses full of exotic plants not found in Europe.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
Benjamin and his family bought the castle in 2010.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Being only 15 minutes from Nantes and its international airport, we felt charmed by this superb 19th Century castle with its elegant and comfortable interior, surrounded by a 6 hectare park with beautiful trees, a vineyard and a pond.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The property was owned by a succession of noble families. It has experienced the highs and the lows, with prosperous days during its construction, through to progressive and complete abandonment at the end of the 1960s, leading to near ruin.
Fortunately, the new owners fully restored the castle with a modern interior and new roof giving it a warm and welcoming family atmosphere.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
The famous South African sing-songwriter Nataniel came to stay for a few months. Yannick Noah, a former professional French tennis player has also stayed.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

The chateau is perfectly located in the heart of a region full of sights and attractions for all to enjoy. Nantes is worth a visit, with beautiful shop fronts, museums, gardens, botanical parks and the unmissable ‘Les Machines de ‘Iles’ for both the young and old!
Also, stroll around the charming city of Clisson with its medieval castle, Friday market and water park along the river. Discover the many vineyards and wine caves offering tastings.
About an hour away, you can reach the Atlantic coast with its beaches and many attractions including La Baule Bay, the Airbus factory, many ports, museums, zoos and parks.

Really eat?
There are many wonderful restaurants in the area, including Michelin starred ones.

Really see?
The famous chateaux of the Loire and the park Puy du Foy with its historical sights.

  • Beautiful French Chateau

    on 18/08/2016

Beautifully laid out in exquisite settings. Every bedroom was a delight. Countryside as you would expect in the Loire Valley. Our hosts were charming & helpful. The chef we organised with wine was fabulous. A week to savour with good friends.

  • A holiday dream with all the family!

    on 16/07/2016

The chateau is more beautiful that we expected. The rooms and all interior are perfect, and the garden is marvellous. We are a family of 14 from 8 to 71 years old and all of us love our time spent there this summer. The pool is warm and the Jacuzzi is hot, and the barbecue is perfect. We used the kitchen and it was perfect for us, like the dinning room and the piano room. I am sure we will come back soon and we will be there for more time. Benjamin, and all his family are very good hosts. Don't forget to try Muscadet wine.

  • The BEST holiday......

    on 10/08/2015

We've just come back from the best holiday and just wish we had booked two weeks instead of one! We were a party of 13, aged from 11 to 69, and all of us had a brilliant time.
The house was beautiful, comfortable and has everything you could ever want! The pool was warm, clean and kept the kids entertained for hours every day.
We hired a chef, that Ben (the owner) recommended, for an evening and had an amazing meal around the huge dining table, otherwise we just BBQ or cooked in the very well equipped kitchen (with the luxury of two dishwashers for afterwards!). The house and bedrooms were very spacious and so we never felt crowded and everyone had their own bathrooms. The wifi wasn't great, but good enough for the kids to not feel isolated from the world!
We didn't really want to leave the grounds as it was all so lovely, but did take a trip to the amazing Machines in Nantes, which is well worth a visit - Joules Vernes inspired mad, enormous machines and an amazing carousel. We also hired segways there very cheaply and had a great day out. Nearby Clisson is beautiful has a great market on Fridays and lovely restaurants.
Ben and Shelley are the loveliest hosts - very easy going and happy to help in any way, without being intrusive.
We are hoping to go again next year, so am a bit reluctant to recommend this place too much or it will get completely booked, however it is absolutely wonderful and you really should go!

  • A wonderful place for a family reunion

    on 05/07/2015

Our occasion to visit Chateau Anais was the 5 year reunion with our 7 grandchildren, now ages 19-24. We had been looking for a special place to celebrate and when we saw this place online, we grabbed it! Located 30 minutes from Nantes and a TGV ride from Paris, we were so pleased to find a room for each person with individual bath, beautiful formal dining room and living room, large kitchen, heated pool - what else could we ask for? So, when we corresponded with the owners, they helped us arrange for a chef and our chef's tour of the Nantes marketplace, a tour of a local Muscat winery, reservations at a two star Michelin restaurant near by, fresh breads and croissants every morning. Gathering around the swimming pool, walking through the vineyards or to the nearby village, we knew we had found a place to build memories for our family. And build, we did.....Our grandchildren were blown away by the place - having come from hostels and camping areas, wine and cheese dinners -suddenly, they were part of the artisanal scene. What we didn't expect was the warmth of Ben's family, whom we invited to join us for our final dinner 4 days later. We didn't just live in luxury, we found new friends who made us feel at home and a part of their family. So, if you want a place to stay where hospitality and lifelong friendships can develop, give them a call, tell them what you are planning and what you need and they will make it happen. Tell them we sent you...C'est Magnifique.
