Hot Tub Walk to Village All Bedrooms En-Suite

In a tiny village surrounded by rolling countryside in the heart of Gascony, this glorious château embodies the spirit of the Gers with its character, relaxed ambience and tranquillity. Within a short drive of three of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, Château Armagnac is perfectly positioned for exploring this glorious region.

This 19th century maison was formerly a small well-regarded hotel but has recently been converted into a self-catering holiday home for up to 18 guests across its seven impressive en suite bedrooms and suites. The owner’s kind hospitality is still evident through the range of optional services they can offer such as a beautifully laid out buffet breakfast of delightful regional produce, wine-tastings at the château or private vineyard tours (after all, one of the owners is an oenologist!) and a concierge service for any other requests you may have.

Throughout the château you’ll find touches of Gascon character such as the oak beamed ceilings, exposed walls, stone floors, grand working fireplaces and charming reminders that you’re in the land of Grand Armagnac. There’s also a perfect blend of old and new furnishings, alongside modern décor, creating a true sense of homeliness in otherwise grand surroundings. Sit back on the sofas in one of the two living rooms, perhaps with a roaring winter fire or the sun pouring in through the windows, with a glass of local Armagnac or Côtes de Gascogne wine from the elegant bar.

The seven bedrooms each have their own individual style yet all feature air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and an en suite contemporary bath or shower room. There are four particularly spacious suites upstairs, two with a terrace with charming village views and one with a bathroom including a jacuzzi bath and private sauna. In the meantime, every guest can take their turn relaxing in the 4-person hot tub or the larger sauna in the dedicated spa area downstairs where an in-house masseur can be arranged.

Enjoy views of the undulating countryside from the long swimming pool outside, open in the summer for swimming lengths or simply cooling down and admiring the scenery surrounding you. The original moats are also still within the grounds, a lovely spot for eco-friendly fishing (indeed, the owners have been ecologically mindful in many ways when renovating this beautiful home and its gardens).

The delightful medieval villages of Montréal-du-Gers, Fourcès and Larressingle are within a short drive, all three classified one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ whilst the charming towns of Éauze and Condom are also close by with their weekly markets and excellent restaurants. A little further afield, you can visit historic towns such as Auch and Agen or listen to summer jazz in Marciac.

Food-lovers will rejoice in this region where arguably some of the best French food is produced, not just the well-known meat dishes such as foie-gras and magret but all sorts of seasonal fruit and vegetables as well. Of course, there are endless vineyards as well, producing excellent Gascon wines and famous Grand Armagnac; the owners can provide lots of information on restaurants and wineries to visit.

Cycle, horse-ride or hike through the beautiful landscapes, canoe along the river Baise, play golf in stunning surroundings or swim in thermal baths and nearby lakes. There are plenty of ways to experience the slow pace of life of the Gers before returning to your relaxed abode at Château Armagnac.

What you should know…

  • The 12-person price includes four bedrooms only (you can select which four bedrooms/suites in advance if you wish) and is not available during the high season, whilst the 18-person prices includes all seven bedrooms/suites
  • Air-conditioning is featured in the bedrooms only
  • The original moats around the château make a delightful spot for fishing and are fenced to make them secure
  • The enclosed grounds also feature the château's original wells (from which water is taken for use in the WCs in this ecologically minded home)
  • Solar panels for hot water and an ecological pellet boiler for under-floor heating are two other examples of how the owners have considered the environmental impact when renovating the house

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

In the very heart of the Gers, in the historic region of Gascony, Château Armagnac lies in a very small but characterful village surrounded by wonderful countryside in an area known for its natural beauty, slow pace of life and extraordinary food and drink.

The location is especially superb due to its proximity to three of the region’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’; Montréal (8km), Fourcès (13km) and Larressingle (12km), all within an easy drive. The nearest, Montréal-du-Gers, is a bastide town with a central square dating back to the 13th century and home to a small handful of restaurants. Look out for the medieval night markets if staying in the height of the summer! Admire the impressive fortified walls in charming Larressingle and explore the winding medieval lanes in beautiful Fourcés. Both Larressingle and Montréal-du-Gers are on one of the major pilgrim paths that lead to Santiago de Compostela.

The small town of Éauze (13km) is also a picturesque place to spend some time and a useful spot for shopping (especially at the Thursday morning market) whilst the town of Condom (18km) offers further amenities alongside its Wednesday market, gastronomic restaurants and its magnificent cathedral. After exploring the historic centre, take a stroll along the banks of the Baise river; in the summer you can even hire a small motor boat for a day out exploring.

The land of Grand Armagnac and excellent wine, the owners can arrange an exclusive tasting inside your château or reserve a private tour of some of the finest vineyards and wineries in Gascony; indeed one of the owner is a well-regarded oenologist who can share his passion and knowledge with you.

The owners can also recommend some of the best restaurants in the area where you can experience wonderful regional cuisine or provide information about weekly organic and summer night markets across Gers. The local produce of this part of Gascony really is quite incredible from foie gras and magret to wild peaches, mushrooms and so much more, depending on the season.

Those who crave activities can cycle across the quiet roads of the surrounding countryside filled with incredible scenery or follow many walking trails nearby. There is also horse-riding close by and various golf courses across the region including the 18-hole Le Golf d’Éauze within a short drive.

A little further afield, other fascinating villages and towns to visit include Fleurance (45km) and Lectoure (40km), especially on market day and the beautiful town of Auch (52km), the historic capital of Gascony. Heading over the border to Landes, the famous town of Roquefort (57km) is a must for cheese-lovers whilst prunes soaked in Armagnac are an absolute delight in Agen (58km), in the Lot-et-Garonne department.

Not forgetting Marciac (57km), around an hour away, home to the famous summer jazz festival which attracts performers from across the world in late July and August every year. If visiting at other times of year, look out for various musical and theatre performances at the impressive venue L’Astrada, visit one of the many art galleries or soak up the vibrant ambience of this historic town.

Region

A relatively new addition to France, the Midi-Pyrénées was created to surround the cultural capital of Toulouse in the late 1970s. You might think that its relative youth would mean the Midi-Pyrénées is short on character or identity, but remember, this is France we’re talking about – the whole country is steeped in history and tradition. Encompassing parts of Gascony, Languedoc, the Gers and several others, you’ll get a varied slice of the whole French experience here, not least if you stay at one of our beautiful chateaux in the Midi-Pyrénées! And if you want to discover the best of what the region has to offer, our Midi-Pyrénées travel guide is here to show you where to go, what to eat and how you can make the best of your break with some amazing activities.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

The Gers is a wonderful place for families where you can embrace the slow-pace of life, enjoy the wonderful scenery around you and take part in some lovely family-friendly activities across the region. Children will love learning about the adventures of Comte d'Artagnan and his three musketeers as they explore idyllic fortified villages nearby.

Just a couple of kilometres from the chateau you will find an equestrian school with over 40 horses and ponies as well as other farmyard animals. Keen cyclists can also hire bikes locally to explore the beautiful landscapes or there are of course many walking trails for all ages to follow.

After wandering around the historic town of Condom with its magnificent cathedral, take a gentle boat trip up the Baise river or you could even hire a small motorboat for a day pottering around.

There’s also canoe hire at Beaucaire-sur-Baise, just south of Condom, or try a variety of watersports at Lac de l'Uby, near Barbotan les Thermes, where you will find swimming, watersports, fishing and a beautiful environment for walking and cycling. Castéra-Verduzan is another great spot for thermal baths and summer fun in the water with slides and swimming.

A little further but lots of fun, the theme park Walibi Sud-Ouest is around an hour away, perhaps combined with a visit to the historic town of Agen.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
5 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
It's my father who is oenologue who fell in love with it. He lives in the village and wanted to create a special place for oenotourism with very high standards.

Are there any interesting stories in its history? During the 2 years renovation, my father, Jacques, surveyed the work in progress and decided to open the chateau to archeologists from natural history museum of Toulouse to make some studies, as the chateau is from the XIIth century. They found some very interesting things which are still in exhibition at the chateau such as some stone bullets from the middle ages or some antic dishes from this period. The full history of the Chateau is available for any interested guests into each bedroom.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
The rap singers Big Flo and Oli stayed at the chateau. Very well known from the french public. They are a very famous and young rap duo in France.

For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…

Must do?
A wine or armagnac tasting with the owner Jacques (my dad!) who loves to share about his wine passion! Or why not go horse riding around the wild lakes of the area with one of our neighbours. It's famous and always appreciated, especially since he's a specialist with ethological horse riding.

Must eat?
Foie gras and duck specialities of course!

Must see?
The fortified village of Larressingle, AKA “the little carcassone”. The 'in season' night markets are a must see here, as is the region from the air inside a hot air balloon!

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
The local legend says that an underground tunnel was built under the chateau during the middle ages. It was supposed to lead to a treasure that has never been found. We're still looking for it!

  • An amazing place

    on 30/08/2024

This was an amazing place in a picturesque area to share a family holiday. The property had a private pool where we could swim while watching the sun go down, a moat to enjoy some peaceful fishing and grounds large enough to have little reason to leave. The inside of the château is full of character and wonderfully furnished.

  • Perfect!

    Created on 02/09/2023

This renovated chateau was just perfect for a big group trip. So much to enjoy - seven chic guest rooms, the sauna, hot tub, bar, swimming pool and library. It's a luxurious choice with heaps of history, and a really gorgeous place for a memorable retreat.

  • A little piece of heaven

    on 27/06/2022

If you're planning a visit to Gers, you won't find a better home base. The hotel is a fabulous restoration. The rooms are very comfortable, the views from this hilltop location are magnificent. The Wi-Fi is fast, and most rooms have their own hotspot. But more important, the hosts are the most gracious. They both speak excellent English and were invaluable in helping us make the most of our too-short stay. They bend over backwards to help their guests. They also happen to have a great stash of vintage Armagnacs! Stay here; you won't be sorry.
