Château De Montpezat is a beautifully restored and impeccably designed Renaissance castle located on the banks of the Garonne river, with the Pyrenees mountains close by. Perfect for a grand family holiday or event, the château, with farmhouse next door and gatehouse down the lane, houses up to 22 guests amongst 40 hectares of forests comprised of oaks, pines, sycamores and ash trees.
Privacy, luxury and comfort are at the heart of this historic château, and a team of staff (security guard, concierge and maid) are on hand to take care of your every need, making your holiday a dream. The owner, Jean-François, began a decade-long renovation of this 1520s castle in 1998, and the fruits of his labour are rich indeed. The opulent blend of old and new styles will please the most discerning guests - from the bathroom lounges, to the ultramodern suite beneath the eaves.
The historical Salle des Gardes has hardly changed over the past five centuries. Initially a room where the castle's personnel cooked and guards came for some heat by its massive fireplace, it has become the primary dining room and remains the true heart of the château.
The red living room's history is marked by 19th century Gothic revival with its large chimney and wooden panelling. There is also the formal yellow dining room, billiard room and a fully functional office. The office offers a quiet space for work, and is equipped with a MAC (with all commonly-used software), internet access, a printer and a fax-machine. Located on the château's top floor, the billiard room is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of Armagnac after dinner. It is also the TV room, with access to major international channels through satellite connection and a choice of DVDs for guests to enjoy.
In terms of sleeping arrangements, the castle offers seven wonderful suites, six with queen or king-size beds and one with two spacious twin beds. The château renovations were finalised in 2008, culminating in the completion of the spectacular Cathedral Suite under the rooftop, with its 5 metre high ceilings. The historical rooms have also been decorated over a 10-year time-frame through years of searching in antique shops or auctions and are unique in style. The Cathedral Suite, however, is "outrageously" modern, with contemporary art, a design bed and 50s and 60s Brazilian furniture.
Bedrooms 8, 9 and 10 are located in the farmhouse just a few steps from the main building, while the 11th bedroom can be found in the gatehouse, located at the entrance of the property, a 1-minute walk from the castle. This cosy detached house used to be the residence of the former caretaker and is ideal for those seeking a little extra privacy. Inside, there is a kitchen, a living room, a double bedroom and a bathroom with a shower and WC.
Outside, the château’s pool (heated upon request) is open from approximately May until October and is the ideal place to enjoy a rare moment of far niente. A poolside lunch can even be prepared and served for 20 guests at the pool, with the help of the Argentinian barbecue.
There are many activities available on site depending on the season, including fishing, hunting, archery, pétanque, croquet, Mölkky, bespoke orienteering races, darts, table tennis and trampoline. Yoga, reiki, reflexology and Tibetan bowl sessions can also be organised. Plus, you can enjoy the château's orchard which offers its fruit from June to October.
The nearest shops and restaurants can be found in the local village, just a 5-minute walk from the property with further options available in the riverside spa town of Salies-du-Salat (8km), a 10-minute drive away. Toulouse is around an hour away, accessible by car or by train, departing from the local village, and is not to be missed. Be sure to take in the wonderful arts and architecture of France’s fourth largest city.
What you should know…
- Please note that air-conditioning is only available in the Cathedral Suite (bedroom 6).
- Please note that the three farmhouse bedrooms are more contemporary in style than those in the château.
- There is somewhat limited fridge space - perhaps it's time to enlist a caterer!

Location
About the surrounding area of Chateau De MontpezatChâteau De Montpezat is situated amongst 40 hectares of woodland area on the banks of the Garonne river with stunning views of the Pyrenees mountains. Despite its secluded ambiance, the château is conveniently located just a few hundred metres from the local village, allowing easy access to local shops and restaurants.
The region is charged with history; the château is even located on the road leading to Santiago de Compostela, the centuries-old pilgrimage route. There are a number of historical chateaux and churches to visit, such as the grand cathedral of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, and handful of charming villages are a short distance away by car, including the riverside spa town of Salies-du-Salat.
In the heart of the rural Midi-Pyrénées, around 30 minutes’ drive from the château is the UNESCO classified ancient village of Saint-Lizier, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. Perched upon a hill above the Salat, this Gallo-Roman site is rich with relics and ties to its past. Spend a slow morning strolling along the cobbled streets and secret passages, admiring the views of the meadows, forests, river and the not-too-distant Pyrenees mountains.
The local village train station is only a 10-minute walk from the chateau, with rail connections to larger towns and cities like Toulouse, Pau and Tarbes. Toulouse, also known as La Ville Rose, is well worth a visit, known for its distinctive pink-toned buildings, history, art, and of course, the food.
The South-West of France is a unique region in terms of its wines and gastronomy, and the team at Château De Montpezat will be happy to organise excursions for you to discover the best local specialities during your stay, namely foie gras producers and winemakers.
The beautiful natural landscapes give way to a host of sports which are available nearby, including tennis, horseback riding, golf, ski and summer mountain sports. In the milder months, you can cycle with road or mountain bikes (with or without a guide or assistance vehicle; e-bikes available), trek in the Pyrenees (with or without a mountain guide) or try white water rafting.
In 2022, the château partnered with Cynisca, a new US women's cycling team and a professional service course is now available for guests to use. It is one of the most upscale and professional cycling venues in the French Pyrénées and perfect for cycling enthusiasts looking to keep up with the sport during their holidays.

Are there any interesting stories in the property's history?
The property's history dates back to the early 16th century when the Montpezat family, Lords of Tajan, built the Renaissance château upon the river banks in order to control trade on the Garonne river.
Soon after the French revolution, the Prince of Berghes married the daughter of the château's new owner and the property became their summer residence.
The architect Ruprich Robert, a fellow of Viollet le Duc, was later hired to modernise the building and turned it into a major example of Gothic Revival architecture and design.
The property changed hands several times before the father of the present owner, Jean-François, purchased it in the early 1990s.

Perfect for our Special Day
Our wedding in Chateau De Montpezat was everything we imagine it to be…..and more! We cannot thank the team at the Chateau enough for what they did to assist us with making our day so special. Not only is this a wonderful location, the team there give you more than they need to in order to help you plan and to help you bring it all together at the end. Not only that, if you are looking for a wedding that really shows off the best of France, this is the place to do it. The Chateau itself is absolutely surrounding! Alongside that, you get all the surrounding areas which will keep continue to amaze you every day that you are there! There are so many options here for how to set up your event, there is a lot of space, outbuildings, farm house, courtyard, barns etc. We utilised a lot of them for our wedding and the photos were stunning. Make sure you use the knowledge of the team onsite (Jean-François, Patrick and Angie) who can ensure you make the best decision on how you utilise this location. They really are experts and advised and supported us on the whole organisation, even topics which were not under their direct responsibility. They give you more than they need to which you do not hear to often when organising events! If you enjoy good food and wine, you will not beat this region. We also used a local chef (Jean-Pierre) for our wedding, upon the advice of the Chateau, and we received so many compliments from our guests. If you have the opportunity to work with him, don’t hesitate to do so, you will note regret it! Staying in the Chateau, you also have the daily support of Patrick who will be available for you for all of your needs. He really is the soul of the Chateau and he made ourselves and our families so at home, it really added a lot to our experience. Also, if you are looking to organise a wedding, you should utilise Angela (Angie). She is exactly the person you need on the ground to make things happen. She is organised, committed and contributed tremendously to our wedding. You also have the owner of the Chateau, Jean-François, who provides expertise with all the suppliers and contracts, is also full of great idea’s! The whole team at the Chateau really do bring this place to life. We can’t wait to go back there again in the future!

Magical Wedding!
We celebrated our Wedding over four magical days at Chateau de Montpezat in September 2016. After viewing the property a year before we were in no doubt it was the perfect setting for our wedding! The Chateau itself is the most stunning property, full of old furnishings and historic charm but also very homely. Each room is spectacular in its own way and the views overlooking the Garonne river are breathtaking. The grounds are enchanting and well kept and provided an incredible backdrop for our wedding photos.
Jean-Francois was a fantastic host, he provided exceptional assistance with every query we had over the year we spent planning. No question was too big or too small, he was always on hand to help. Patrick and his team were brilliant during our stay - nothing was too much trouble.
We stayed with the bridal party and immediate family in the Chateau and cottage. The cottage was particularly good for children as was close to the courtyard where the wedding reception was held. The courtyard provided the most enchanting setting for the reception and we danced until the early hours. We spent the day following the wedding relaxing with our guests by the pool reminiscing on a wonderful few days and not wanting to leave.
We would highly recommend Chateau de Montpezat for a celebration of any kind. It will always hold a special place in our hearts and memories - we already look forward to the next time we will visit this magical place. -
Fairy Tale Wedding
We were lucky enough to have our wedding at Chateau de Montpezat and it was truly magical. We spent four days in total in the chateau and were able to relax in beautiful surroundings before and after the wedding. We were greeted by the lovely Patrick when we arrived. He couldn't do enough for us and was always on hand if we ever needed anything. He bought fresh bread and pastries every morning for all our guests in the chateau, which was a real treat. JF, the owner is a great guy and was around for the wedding weekend to give us support with anything we needed. We couldn't have done it without you both!
Our wedding day was perfect, with gorgeous sunshine all day. The chateau and grounds are stunning and we really did feel like prince and princess of the castle. We stayed with our bridal party in the chateau and the cottage. The cottage was ideal for the guests with young children and babies as it was right next to the courtyard where we had the wedding breakfast. It was perfect for dining and looked beautiful with the lighting and later on for dancing the night away with our band playing.
We would highly recommend this place to anyone for their wedding or special occasion. We will definitely go back one day. We miss it already!
Thank you so much for everything JF and team! -
A very special week in a magical location
We stayed in the Chateau for a week. All our family 10 adults, and 10 children from 13 to 1 year. The village is very small but there is an epicerie, baker and butcher and there is a supermarket 10 minutes drive away. The Chateau is huge and loses people very easily so that we were not under each other' feet. In fact we had trouble finding each other the first few days. The bedrooms are large and well furnished and the cathedral room is beautiful with an amazing view. Catering was made easy by Patrick, the amazing caretaker, buying our pastries each morning and laying for breakfast. We had the great chef Jean Pierre to cook for us for three nights, and the barbecue is big so that was easy for two nights. Manuela and Patricia came each day and cleaned the kitchen and the bedrooms, two lovely cheerful women. Patrick is a gem who looks after you so well, he just seems to appear at the very moment you thought you might like to ask him something, and providing 20 clean, large towels each day was no mean feat! The pool is large, clean and lovely. There are trees around but the loungers are by the pool in the sun. The children had a ball staying in a real castle and using the pool and we had a magical time eating and drinking in the evenings outside this beautiful chateau in the quiet countryside. It was a perfect week which we will not forget.

Beautiful wedding
We had our beautiful wedding at Chateau De Montpezat and words cannot express how much I recommend this place. The photos do not do it justice it is even more magical in the flesh. Our family and guests all loved the venue and we enjoyed playing lord and lady of the castle for a long weekend. It will always have a place in our hearts and the photos are stunning! The chateau was extremely good value and the house and grounds are immaculate. Jean Francois who owns the chateau is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He helped us throughout our booking and planning phases and helped us find local venues for drinks, things for our guests to do in the stunning Pyrenees and put us in touch with incredible wedding planners and caterers. In addition he was on site all weekend at our wedding ensuring everything ran to plan and could not have been more helpful or friendly. Our guests loved him. We will definitely go back to visit. They also do B&B in the farmhouse which we did on one of our planning stays and it is also a gorgeous property and everything is perfect. Do not hesitate to book through Oliver's Travels. You will not be disappointed!
