An 18th-century cottage with glorious views of the Tarn-et-Garonne, Maison Catalpa is such a peaceful holiday home with a heated swimming pool, set in picture-perfect gardens with trailing wisteria, summer roses and jasmine, only 4km from one of France’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

Maison Catalpa is an idyllic place to stay for so many reasons. Sit out on the south-facing terrace beside terracotta pots of red geraniums and gaze at the beautiful scenery around you or seek shade from the warm summer sun by the vine-clad patio, both wonderful spots for al-fresco dining with family or friends. As you stroll around the vast gardens, admire swathes of lavender by the pretty stone steps, soak up the scent of rosemary, discover the fig trees, then relax beneath the huge Catalpa tree by the tranquil swimming pool. Surrounded by a hectare of gardens and woodland, there’s a true sense of seclusion across this special home.

Inside is just as delightful across the characterful interiors with the comfortable lounge and open fireplace, rustic dining room and farmhouse kitchen leading out to one of the dining terraces. The library upstairs features hundreds of the owners’ books which guests are more than welcome to read. Meanwhile, the satellite TV, board games, boules, table tennis and croquet mean hours more fun for every age.

Up to 18 guests can stay in this welcoming French abode across the house’s six main bedrooms (each sleeping 2 guests), in the separate Pigeonnier bedroom with two four-poster beds and beautiful views (4 guests) or making use of the sofa-bed in the library (2 guests). Many of the bedrooms have a private or en suite bathroom and each room is so charmingly decorated with antiques and old-style furnishings.

Within 4km you can be dining beneath the arcades in a pretty bastide village and pottering around its Saturday morning market. A little further afield, enjoy the larger market in Moissac, then hire bikes to cycle by the Tarn River or Canal du Midi before visiting the stunning cloisters at Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Moissac. Montauben is another historic town not to be missed – stop off for lunch in its impressive, red-bricked Place Nationale.

Discover other picturesque villages such as Montcuq and Tournon-d'Agenais or head even further north to idyllic gems dotted along the Lot River including the captivating town of Cahors, a food and wine-lovers paradise with its restaurants, markets and vineyards producing some of the finest Malbec wines in the world.

Maison Catalpa is located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department of south-western France, only 4km from a village that has been classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

You can arrive by aeroplane, ferry or train, hiring a car en route or bringing your own. Fly into Toulouse, Bergerac, Brive–Souillac or even Bordeaux Airport or catch a ferry across to Bilbao, St Malo or one of the other ferry ports on mainland France. If travelling by train, take the fast TGV service from Paris Montparnasse to Agen (54km) or Montauban (35km), taking only three to four hours.

In a hilltop position, the villa itself is surrounded by beautiful scenery and you may even be able to see the Pyrénées in the far distance. A 4km drive takes you to a pretty bastide village that dates back to the 12th century with a small main square and attractive arcades. Soak up the medieval ambience as you dine in a picturesque restaurant or enjoy the Saturday morning market. Keen walkers note that the village is on the GR65 trail – pilgrims used to stop here and admire the wonderful views from Le Jardin du Pèlerin.

To the south, Moissac (23km) is home to several good restaurants and hosts a large Sunday morning market. On the banks of the Tarn River, the small town is most famous for its Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Moissac and spectacular cloisters whilst the Pont-Canal Du Cacor is an impressive sight where the canal crosses the river via a bridge. Hire bikes to ride along the tow paths or look out for canoeing and kayaking opportunities on the Tarn and Garonne Rivers.

Activity lovers can find horse-riding and tennis within a short drive and you can also hire bikes in the charming village of Montcuq (17km). Lac de Montcuq is a lovely spot for picnics and afternoon swimming at its Base de Loisirs, usually open late June to early September. The Aquazone, an inflatable water park, will delight older children in the height of the summer. The lake near Montaigu-de-Quercy (20km) is another popular place for water-based activities in July and August.

Heading north, there are many gorgeous villages and towns along the Lot River such as Villeneuve-sur-Lot (51km), Puy-l'Évêque (42km), Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (64km) and Cahors (42km). Cahors is known for its vineyards producing some of the world’s most famous Malbec wines and it’s a beautiful town to visit with its bridge, Pont Valentré, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the grand Cathédrale Saint-Etienne. As well as amazing wine, it’s a food-lovers paradise across its shops, markets and restaurants.

Tournon-d'Agenais (30km) is another historic gem of the Lot-et-Garonne department – try it’s delicious pastry dessert, tourtiere, made from apples. Back to the Tarn River, discover the historic town of Montauban (36km) with its handsome red-brick square, Place Nationale, and baroque cathedral.

Encompassing parts of Gascony, Languedoc, the Gers and several others, you’ll get a varied slice of the whole French experience here, not least if you stay at one of our beautiful chateaux in the Midi-Pyrénées! • What an amazing house in an idyllic location!

    on 09/09/2024

What an amazing house in an idyllic location! We loved the very private location and also the access to local amenities to stock up on fish, meat, cheese and wine either at the supermarket or farmers market. The accommodation is very comfortable with lots of different combinations of bedrooms and bathrooms that suited our family and friends perfectly. We can't recommend highly enough and have booked to go back next year.

  • I cannot recommend it highly enough

    on 24/01/2023

Maison Catalpa is a wonderful holiday destination. If the idea of an English country house in a French rural setting appeals, you will love this place.

The house and gardens have been lovingly developed and looked after over many years by its English owner to provide a comfortable home and relaxing surroundings.

The rooms are all spacious and beautifully furnished. There are many personal touches which give it the feel of a real family home.

You can dine al fresco on the terrace with views towards the Pyrenees (you can see the outline of the mountains on a clear day); on rare occasions when the weather is less clement, you can gather indoors seated around a splendid candle lit table with a roaring log fire in the background.

The grounds are delightful. A 10-metre swimming pool is perhaps the focal point, whether for floating in the sunshine or more serious exercise.

The gardens are well stocked with native species, including edible varieties like figs and grapes as well as more familiar herbs like rosemary and sage.

The house is situated on a hilltop. Across the valley is the medieval town of Lauzerte where you can shop at the local supermarket or dine in the town’s restaurants and bars.

Further afield (approx 30 minutes driving) is the town of Moissac situated on the River Tarne, just up-stream from its confluence with the Garonne.

If you are a fan of French markets and like self-catering, you will find everything you could wish for at the markets on Saturday and Sunday. Get there early! There are also a number of very good restaurants specialising in local cuisine – confit de canard, fois gras and excellent salades de campagne. You can also explore the medieval St-Pierre Abbey, originally a Benedictine monastery and famous for its sculpted cloisters.

No description of Maison Catalpa would be complete without mention of the housekeeper and general factotum. She looks after the house and gardens and has a wide range of practical skills and extensive knowledge of the local area, not to mention speaking three languages (Dutch, French and English).

We have been going to Maison Catalpa with family and friends for over 20 years; I cannot recommend it highly enough.

  • Highly recommend!

    on 19/01/2023

I visited Maison Catalpa for a week in May with my family. The house is very well appointed in its own grounds towards the top of a hill with far stretching views over rolling hills and French countryside. There were 11 of us in total with 3 children and there was plenty of space. The house has everything your could want and a very well equipped kitchen. It is also very tastefully furnished in old English style which was elegant and comfortable. The gardens are very beautiful and the large terrace is a wonderful place to have lunch and dinner. I was surprised how beautiful the surrounding countryside was and there are wonderful markets and historic towns to visit nearby. The weather was a little wet but there is still plenty to do and the pool is heated. Since then I have returned and have enjoyed wonderful weather and very good times indeed. I would highly recommend this house!

  • Haven

    on 02/09/2022

2022 was our second stay at Maison Catalpa, both with extended family. Mason Catalpa is a haven. It is clearly a home, not just a holiday rental, and this comes through in the ambience. The house is comfortable, relaxed, full of interesting objects. It has a well stocked library, and all the paraphernalia you need for either rustic dining on the terrace or a lavish dinner party. It's a gentle place, and although not seeming large from the outside, on warm afternoons 12 guests disappeared easily into its bedrooms for quiet time, you weren't aware of others being there. Lazy days were spent by the large, warm pool with sun loungers and lawn games, or just gazing at the splendid view. The house does not have air conditioning, so some of the South facing bedrooms can be warm on hot afternoons, but fans are provided and the pool is the perfect antidote. Anne the housekeeper is a whirlwind of quiet efficiency and a mine of great information on local markets and festivals that might be off the beaten track. Can't wait to get a dose of Maison Catalpa again.

  • Special place to stay

    on 19/07/2022

Maison Catalpa was everything we wanted and more. The house is exceptional, beautifully fitted out and very comfortable. The bedrooms and bathrooms are immaculate, the swimming pool delightful, the outdoor eating areas spacious, the grounds well kept and the views magnificent .

My fifth stay here – each time the house feels more comfortable and welcoming. Full of antiques and always beautifully presented, and with spectacular views over the Tarn et Garonne countryside, Maison Catalpa is a special place to stay.
