Region
The capital of the French Riviera, Nice offers Oliver's Travel's guests a wealth of experiences with its beautiful old town, art galleries and museums, atmospheric markets and the famous Promenade des Anglais overlooking the city beach and glistening Mediterranean.
Bathed in light from le grand bleu and enjoying a mild climate even during the winter months, Nice is a fine destination all year round – indeed, the city has earned its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site for being a ‘winter resort town of the Riviera’.
No matter the time of year, it’s wonderful to stroll to Cours Saleya in the morning to admire its lovely flower and food market (open daily, except Mondays) before dining on a restaurant terrace for a leisurely lunch making the most of the city’s great reputation for gastronomy. Alternatively, look out for street food vendors preparing Nice’s famous chickpea flour flatbread, socca, then take time to explore Vieux Nice with its narrow shady lanes and rich heritage.
Not forgetting the superb shopping opportunities of the city whether perusing the upmarket boutiques of the Carré d’Or quarter or shopping to your heart’s content at Galeries Lafayette before wandering along Avenue Jean Medecin, a boulevard lined with shops and cafes leading to Basilique Notre-Dame de l’Assomption.
On the other side of the city, Colline du Château is a huge elevated park offering panoramic views of the Baie des Anges, city and hills beyond - take the lift if the stairs are a little too much. The hill’s shady paths are especially welcoming in the summer months and there is a lovely playground for children – take a picnic of delicious produce bought in the old town below.
Back by the seafront, wander, cycle, jog or even roller-skate along the iconic 7km long Promenade des Anglais, occasionally resting beneath the shade of the giant palms to gaze at the bay. Look out for luxury hotels, exclusive beach clubs and Belle Époque architecture. The famous Nice Carnival takes place here in February/March.
Turn off at the Promenade du Paillon, close to the outdoor Théâtre de Verdure de Nice, then continue on to Place Masséna, a grand public square facing the Fontaine du Soleil. Kids and teens will love the vast space across this vast urban park with children’s play areas and the Miroir d’Eau for endless water fun. The promenade eventually leads to the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain (MAMAC), one of many impressive museums and art galleries in Nice.
If you feel like escaping the city, head to Nice-Ville train station and hop on a train towards Antibes, Juan-les-Pins and Cannes. In the other direction, spend the day experiencing the French Riviera charm of Villefranche-sur-Mer, only seven minutes by train, or continue to Monaco and Menton before crossing the Italian border – Ventimiglia is less than an hour away.
