At this chateau in Normandy, modern New York design meets classic French elegance. You'll instantly see why this chic 17th century chateau has been featured on the covers of Maison Normandes and Elle Decor.

The sunny interior has been expertly designed, with stylish sitting areas throughout the house where you can relax, have a chat, and gaze out towards the ten acres of beautiful gardens. A wonderful new spacious conservatory, featuring an impressive La Cornue kitchen, offers further opportunities to relax and socialise with family and friends.

The splendid formal dining room, featuring silk handprinted De Gournay wallpaper, is ideal for lingering evening meals on cooler evenings. Wine aficionados can also head down to the two original caves under the chateau which have been lovingly restored to create the perfect spot for wine and cheese tastings, sampling the fine products that this region has to offer.

Outside is the chateau's newly refurbished private heated swimming pool surrounded by comfortable loungers and beautiful paving featuring Spanish mosaics. The ten acres of land include formal gardens, a pond and lawns, perfect for a spot of cricket. If you want to explore beyond the grounds, borrow a bicycle and take a ride through the fields to the nearby village to pick up fresh bread and croissants or wander further afield in the beautiful surrounding countryside.

A 40 minute drive will take you to the capital of the Normandy region, Rouen (40 km). This medieval city holds historic and artistic treasures, like works by Monet at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. Indeed, Monet's own gardens at Giverny are just an hour's drive from the chateau. With Paris and the D-Day beaches each only 2 hours away, northern France is at your fingertips.

The owners have taken great pride in creating an elegant yet inviting ambience at Chateau Lazuline, ideal for those wishing to experience graceful style, exquisite surroundings and a warm welcome in this idyllic part of France.

  • The owners' neighbouring Farmhouse Lazuline (8 guests) is also available to rent, either separately or alongside the château, subject to availability. They are next door to each other but private, separated by a pine tree hedge, and they each have their own entrance.
  • Please note that children will need to be supervised around the pool and pond as they are both unfenced.
  • The local villages are pretty quiet so you will have to drive a little further afield to find nightlife.
  • The owner has informed us that this property has wheelchair access. However, please contact us before booking so we can discuss individual accessibility requirements with the owner to ensure that this property is suited to your specific needs. Chateau Lazuline is located in beautiful Normandy countryside and farmland. The nearest town is Bourg-Achard where you will find a handful of restaurants and a bakery who will deliver bread and pastries to you each morning if you wish.

Normandy has a huge amount to offer – and most of it is within a reasonable drive of the chateau. It has something for everyone from old cities such as Rouen (40km) where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, Monet's garden at Giverny (80km), the landing beaches at Omaha and beyond (155km) and further historic sites such as the Bayeux tapestry (135km).

Paris (145km) can be easily reached by train from Rouen in under 90 minutes or alternatively drive to the delightful seaside resort of Deauville (65km) where you will find designer boutiques and lovely beaches. Honfleur (50km) is one of the many pretty fishing villages in Normandy or head to the pretty village of La Bouille (18km) where Monet painted La Seine.

Normandy is rightly famous for its food - especially the cheeses such as Livarot Camembert, and Pont l'Eveque - and Calvados, the apple brandy.  Local markets are fantastic and are often the major source of food for the locals, Friday market in Pont Audemer (25km) is particularly good and there are many others in the region, as well as excellent restaurants with fine local cuisine, many with Michelin stars.

Activity lovers will appreciate the great walking, cycling and horse-riding in the area as well as golf within half an hour and canoeing along the natural beauty of the Risle within fifteen minutes.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
7 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

We fell in love with Chateau Lazuline because it looked like the cover of a chocolate box, magnificent white exterior and pastel blue French shutters, it looked like it had tumbled from a romantic novel. It had been beautifully restored by a renowned New York interior designer as his own holiday home. The gardens are beautiful and its location among the fields with neighbours of Normandy cows is beautiful.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

It was occupied by the Germans in the World Wars and we are about to renovate its original cellars located under the chateau from when it was built in 1630. The cellar was used as a kitchen in the 1600’s and the food brought up via an outdoor staircase to the chatellain (owner). It used to have a bell tower which when rung would summon the local owner from the village to his chateau as it would mean he had visitors.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?

Cannot say, have been sworn to secrecy!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Must visit Rouen where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake while the town ate BBQ at the nearby restaurant. Must visit the beautiful fishing village of Honfleur and taste calvados.

Really eat?
A must do is also to taste the divine crème fraiche and butter which Normandy is famous for (all from its dairy cows in our fields). Our local Michelin restaurant in Bourg Achard - L’Amandier for a taste of local Normandy produce. Sometimes cooking classes can be arranged in advance.

Really see?

Deauville market and the beaches of Deauville.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?

Make sure you shop in the local town at the beautiful little French Boulanger (not the supermarket) to taste authentic French style pastries and croissants. Get out and explore the local area.

  • Beautiful chateau with excellent facilities

    on 10/08/2021

We very much enjoyed our stay at the chateau as a large family of three generations with small children. Location is well suited for visiting the coastal area. The large conservatory and the great pool provided for excellent relaxation in a beautiful setting.

  • I would be very happy to return at some point in the future

    on 08/08/2016

Hi Oliver’s Travels! I am very happy to report that the Chateau Lazuline was a delight to stay in. The position, the garden, the rooms were all excellent. A high point for us was the Restaurant L'Armandier (I think that was the name!). The owners were a delight to deal with. They prepared an excellent dinner for us in the Chateau. It was so good, all 14 of us are in their restaurant later in the week. The food and the warmth was a delight to experience. I would be very happy to return at some point in the future.
