Overview
Whatever the season, Château Quatre Saisons is the ultimate home away from home and countryside retreat within easy reach of UK and Paris.
After 375 years, this historic château has been brought back to life with the love and exquisite taste of its new owners, who have transformed it into an incredibly stylish and elegant haven. Previous owners of this estate have been traced back as far as 1495 and some records suggest that the Abbot of Mont Saint-Michel may have been the owner of the surrounding land.
Guests are treated to 60 acres of park and woodlands listed as a ‘site classé’ and offering many restored walking paths, beautiful at all times of the year. There is even a rather mystical Cèdre du Liban reputed to have magical powers.
From its privileged location in the stunning Basse Normandie, it is only a 50-minute drive away from three local jewels; Mont St Michel, Bayeux and the D-Day landing beaches and important sites. The immediate area is home to a popular cycling route, so plenty of safe cycling is on hand and can be enjoyed thanks to the château's complimentary bikes.
After a lengthy and meticulous restoration guests can now enjoy up to 9 elegant bedrooms, plenty of comfortable living areas, a library, a fabulous kitchen as well as a gym and a tennis court. The extremely well-equipped kitchen is a real centre piece of the château and a great place to cook and socialise together with friends and family, but when a break from cooking is required the château can organise great meals by its excellent chef and even breakfast.
Outside there are beautiful lawns, the White Terrace and a spectacular enclosed ‘potager’ offering fresh organic fruit and vegetables for most of the year.
Château Quatre Saisons is one of those rare finds where history, natural beauty and exquisite taste have come together to create a masterpiece...a masterpiece just like the magnificent tapestry that hangs in nearby Bayeux.

Owner Profile
How long have you owned the property?
Nine years
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
A huge house on top of a hill with a stunning view and surrounded by its own woods and parkland. The last Marquis to live here summed it up by saying “It may not be Versailles but it is a beautiful country Château where everyone lives well”.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The first recorded owner in 1492 was Jean Baudry and it seems the Lord Abbot of Mont-Saint-Michel originally owned the land. It was a manoir until 1825 when it was rebuilt with the whole of the façade being added and it became a Château. Its lands are said to have stretched far and wide - nearly 1,000 acres.
In more recent times, the Germans occupied the Château for much of 1944 – only leaving hours before its liberation on August 2nd. The terraced land between the lake and the park was said to have been an anti-aircraft platform and the avenue was used to hide columns of tanks and transports.
On June 6 Saint Lo was heavily bombed so the Chartier de Sédouy family (the Château’s then owners) offered to shelter the many displaced children and over the following two months the Château was home to over 40 children and their teachers. In the metal surround of one of the top floor windows is still the dated signature of one of the teachers.
For those interested in mythology, the Château is included within the book ‘Les Lieux Magiques et Sacrés en France’ as it is believed to be on the junction of two Ley Lines, and the Lebanese cedar is renowned as a magic tree. Even hardened Norman farmers have been found hugging it, seeking solace from the woes of the world.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
The Château was liberated on 2nd August 1944 by the US Army’s 137th Regiment of the 35th Infantry Division. A week later the Count de Sédouy hosted a lunch for the American commanders led by Colonel Birks – and attended by many of the children still refuged at the Château.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
One particularly lovely walk through the Chateau's grounds is known as the Chemin de Croix. This has long been a site of Catholic pilgrimage, erected following a visitation by the virgin, and winds down through the 14 Stations (large stone crosses), each representing a stage of Christ’s journey. Kids love doing this at night with torches!
If you’re feeling active, we recommend exploring the Route de Halage, which goes all the way from La Chapelle to the coast. This is great for walking, running or biking. Along the way you’ll end up underneath the Roches de Ham – a huge natural rock escarpment and local tourist attraction.
In Condé there is a canoe and kayak centre where you go out on the river Vire. For adventurous kids, there is a really great zip wire course over the lake behind the Château in Torigni sur Vire.
Really eat?
Normandy is famous for its dairy products – fabulous gooey Camemberts, strong Pont L’Eveques and smelly Livarot. If you like apples (or alcohol) you’ll be in seventh heaven – the local Calvados, Pommeau and Cidre are legendary, but so too are the Tartes aux Pommes.
Being close to the coast, it’s also great for seafood – there is a lovely rustic restaurant on the beach at Blainville-sur-Mer called La Cale, where you can eat huge pans full of moules with your feet in the sand.
Really see?
The three un-missable sights of Normandy are Bayeux with it’s famous tapestry depicting the Norman conquests; the Mont St Michel – the UNESCO world heritage island with an abbey perched on top; and the WWII Normandy landing beaches. The Château is equidistant between the three at around 45 minutes drive and our gardiens can give recommendations for visits and arrange tours.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
From May to September, we love an afternoon tea or early evening visit to the crêperie at local beauty spot the Roches de Ham. Not only is the view amazing from the top of this natural escarpment, but the crêperie serves award winning cider and fabulous sweet and savoury crepes and galettes, a local speciality. If you’re a big group, best to book a table, otherwise just turn up.

The most comfortable chateau we've ever seen
This was the most comfortable chateau we've ever seen. The kitchen was perfect for cooking while socialising, and relaxing in front of the giant fireplace was the best way to end the evening. I especially loved the round library at the far end of the house, so unique and cosy.

An idyllic, perfectly restored Chateaux
Spent the last week of December at Chateaux Quatre Saisons and loved every minute of our stay. Stunningly restored, large but always feeling cozy. A three hour drive from Paris and ideally set for D-Day locations and many beautiful towns and villages. James is extraordinary: he is a fountain of information and a great chef! We look forward to returning soon.

We really loved our stay.
I would give it 5 stars for the kind, generous and nice service of the people who served us while staying there as well as to the chateau itself and all the area around. It’s a very beautiful area as well as the facilities. We enjoyed this vacation very much. Thanks a lot

I highly recommend this chateau!
We spent the Christmas holidays at this lovely chateau in Normandy. The setting is very picturesque with hikes and rolling hills surrounding the chateau. The first floor has been totally updated and features a gourmet kitchen with all the cooking essentials imaginable. The caretaker brought in a Christmas tree for us and we have never had a more beautiful setting for Christmas by the fire. They can cook for you or you can do it yourself. There is also a library, breakfast room, dining room and living room. Each room is absolutely beautiful and you could entertain a crowd. There were just 5 of us, but we truly enjoyed the entire chateau. The 2nd floor has plenty of space and while the baths have not been renovated, they are certainly clean and fine. There is a charming, small town 10 minutes away for groceries and other necessities. We went to see the D-Day Beaches and museum which were fascinating. We were there for a week and enjoyed all the quaint towns around. I highly recommend this chateau!

The pictures don’t do the Chateau justice!
The Chateau is exactly what one envisions and hopes for in a stay at a beautiful Norman Chateau. I was somewhat nervous that the pictures were not representative of the Chateau - boy was I wrong; the pictures don’t do the Chateau justice! Our stay was perfect - made even more so by the hospitality, happy disposition and fabulous cooking of the gardien - they made our visit to Chateau Quatre Saisons so very special!
Hoping to make another visit to this beautiful chateau! -
Amazing - !
This house is simply phenomenal! The location is so peaceful, but still only a short drive to local supermarkets etc. We have stayed in many, many private villas, and have never had one quite like this in terms of how well kitted out it is - from the kitchen supplies, to the towels, to extremely comfortable beds - it was all perfect. The house is huge with lots of spaces for quiet time, but also has many large rooms for the whole group getting together. The gardens are quite simply something else - we had fresh salad and vegetables from the organic garden area, and the smell of lavender everywhere stilled the mind and soothed the soul! The on-site (but in a separate house) guardian was so helpful - he made our stay so easy, always on hand to provide local knowledge and information, and even provided some of his own food one evening as we were caught short! He also cooked us an exquisite meal - our whole group talked about it non-stop for the rest of the week! And much better value than going out to a restaurant. The owners kept in touch with us also before and during our stay, making sure everything was just right. I could not recommend this house highly enough - !! Thank you for ensuring such a great stay for us.

Thank you for being the highlight of our summer sabbatical!
We wish to thank you for the magical stay we had at your chateau in August 2018 with our family. Most importantly we are impressed with the warmth and professionalism that the owners extended to us during our stay. Words can't express fully how they exceeded expectations in taking care of Harry's father at the nearby hospital, the perfectly orchestrated meals, and logistics in your home. They are a true asset to your chateau operations and branding. We will highly recommend your chateau to our friends and hopefully will return for another visit to your fantastic home.

Wonderful setting, beautiful house
I rented this Château for my family this May bank holiday half term break. There was 18 of us including 10 grandchildren
The house is beautiful and we had very comfortable accommodation. The rooms had everything you could need and the owner added some little extras that made it feel like a home. The interior design is amazing and he has obviously spent a lot of time recreating this beautiful house.
The grounds are extensive and the family used the tennis court everyday we also walked in the surrounding area. We BBQ and catered for ourselves in the excellent kitchen.
A fire pit in the garden was lit every night and the adults enjoyed sitting around it into the early hours
I would recommend this house for a family with children as being in the middle of such large grounds they can make as much noise as they like!
It is also suitable for all types of gatherings as the space available inside the house can blend with all your needs. The book shelves are full of interesting reads and the playroom has lots of games.
The guardians of the property were very helpful and speak English so they provided us with lots of information about the area.
Thank you, my family will remember this holiday fondly

We will highly recommend!!
We just wanted you to know how much we loved our stay. The Chateau was gorgeous and a rare mix of luxury and easy comfort. Everybody, young and old, in our party thoroughly enjoyed everything about the Chateau - from the roominess, to the comfortable beds, to the fantastic views, to the beautiful grounds. Whether we spent our time indoors or out, we marvelled at and revelled in the relaxed atmosphere while also being humbled by the steep history. James and Aaron were also absolutely wonderful hosts. They greeted us with warmth and a fantastic meal. It was the perfect way to begin our stay after a long car ride: beautiful weather and delicious food sprinkled with the antics of a lazy cat and great humor. They provided great suggestions throughout our stay on numerous items and helped us on too many things to list.

Hope to come back sometime!!
Our entire family’s extended thanks and for the most splendid time. Everything was handled beautifully, spot on, and all the information exchanged with the family on all issues was amazing...Menus were to die for...everyday from breakfast through dinner were amazing...The mix for adults and kids was handled terrifically. Side note....when we got to Paris the kids wanted to know if James And Aaron were Coming to do dinner). It is so clear the work over years has been phenomenal. Most beautiful. My wife being a decorator indulged in the decorator books in the library daily, she went though many...Morning coffees were held in library, outdoor tables, dining room, and kitchen. All enjoyed seething in kitchen watching James and a Yvette prepare meals All agreed they need to come cook for us, French cuisine was awesome. Seafood night was amazing...mussels, grilled oysters, lobster…noodles and bolognaise... wine was abound....It's rare when you spend those days and everyone just feels like family!!

What A Wonderful Holiday!
It is a stunning house, beautifully furnished and appointed, and there was nothing that we did not find to be delightful, useful and comfortable. Upon our arrival, we found it to be spotlessly clean and all the rooms ready and welcoming. James and Aaron, the Guardians, were both charming and unfailingly helpful. The weather was cool, and they provided firewood for both the fire pit and indoor fireplace. They answered questions about keys and kitchen appliances and the pleasures of the grounds and arranged and laid the table for two nights when we had formal meals, complete with flowers from the gardens. They carted away the rather large amount of empty wine bottles we generously provided for recycling. They are a credit to the property and added great value to our experience. And the grounds! It was wonderful to say, “I am going to take a walk in the gardens” and come back 2 hours later. Despite the many attractions in the area, myself and several of my friends chose to spend the day on the property just for the pleasure of being there. We are a group of friends who have rented large houses in many parts of the world, and this would be one of the loveliest we have experienced. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The whole stay was delightful. Also, thank you for recommending Yvette; she was charming and what a cook! The two dinners she made for us were wonderful and after the first dinner we all awoke to a huge plate of crepes she had made and left us for breakfast! And as she left on our last night we were all treated to hugs and kisses and all in all it was a fine dining experience.

Fantastic stay in this superbly renovated Chateau
We booked the Chateau, for a family (15 people) get together trip in Mai.
Pre-arrival, Simon the owner was very nice to organize us a local chef for diners and also to have all our breakfast setup.
At our arrival Simon welcome us with some nice rose wine, local cider show us around the beautiful property, we felt immediately home and that he was our guest :)
We rent Chateau in France every year for this family trip and this is the best Chateau we ever rented.
The inside is done with very nice and cosy taste, by adding modernity and keeping the authentic part, its extremely clean and feels like new. The many rooms gives space to everyone, kids love the game room and I personally love the private library in the master bedroom. We had diner outside (the weather was excellent) and inside. The modern kitchen get everything you need to cook together. The quality of the beds and the beds sheets show that you are really living in a luxury place.
The Parc is the place where we had long walk and you have an old Cedar "energy" tree where I was doing my meditation every morning. For those into yoga or mediation you will feel the positive energy there.
We enjoyed the tennis court that is in perfect condition, we were a bit early in the year to enjoy the "potager", for those coming later during the year it might be great.
Locally, we enjoyed many activities, like canoeing, local markets, visit of Churches, etc...
I will recommend without hesitation the Chateau, its a wonderful place to build good memories and take them home with you.

Absolutely first class
We had a large family and friends reunion over Christmas and New Years and everyone loved the chateau. The property has everything - the adults enjoyed cooking in the incredible kitchen and the kids loved exploring the never ending buildings, grounds and gardens. The chateau is absolutely first class in every detail and is warm and toasty even on the coldest days. The owner was exceptionally easy to work with and had decorated the chateau for us which made everything over the holidays so easy. Definitely ask for Yvette if your group and family want special meals and dinners - Yevette is a gem and produced huge qualities of amazing Normandy food and made the trip especially memorable. The fireplace is a real highlight, as is the abbey and stations of the cross further down on the property. We would recommend this chateau without reservation and are already planning a return visit.

Free Range Children!
The Château and grounds are so secluded and safe that our children were able to roam free without us having to worry about their whereabouts. The accommodation is luxurious and amazingly equipped.
-
Perfect for a family Celebration
We traveled from New York to meet up with UK family and could not have imagined a better or more comfortable venue for our big birthday celebrations!
-
Simply Stunning!
We brought our parents over from Texas for a four day break at this Château. We were blown away by the Château itself, but we were also able to take in all the sights of Normandy that you'd come from the USA to see.
