Overview

Exclusive Recommended Pool Ideal for Kids Romantic

In open Provençal countryside, only fifteen minutes drive from the beautiful city of Avignon, Le Mas en Rose is a delightful holiday home full of character with homely comforts, a wonderful place for a family holiday in this idyllic corner of southern France.

The farmhouse has a cosy and traditional feel, with wooden shutters, thick stone walls, cool tiled floors and beamed ceilings yet it has been completely renovated to a high standard with five comfortable bedrooms, three contemporary bathrooms and wonderful living space. The immaculate and well-equipped kitchen is the ideal place to prepare local delicacies found in Provençal markets and you can dine with family and friends in the cool shade of the lovely covered terrace outside.

Step outside and you are surrounded by an acre of gloriously lush gardens filled with Mediterranean scents and colour, lawns and fruit trees. The 12m long salt-water swimming pool is a wonderful place to cool down or laze by the terraces, seek shade under the olive tree or watch kids play with delight in the children’s area with a swing, slide and climbing frame. Towards the end of the day take your sundowner to the outdoor lounge as you relax in idyllic surroundings.

It’s just a five-minute drive to the nearest village where you will find cafes, restaurants and shops or head a little further to beautiful Avignon where you can explore the winding streets, experience the excellent dining opportunities and visit two UNESCO world heritage sites; the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge. There’s horse-riding and golf nearby plus older kids will love kayaking in the Sorgue.

A little further afield you will find the historical city of Nîmes (40km) with its fine collection of Roman remains including the stunning aqueduct, Pont du Gard, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Or head south to experience the natural beauty of the Camargue, a beautiful combination of land, lagoon and sea with pink flamingos, wild white horses and endless wild countryside.

This is a formidable area of summer landscapes, idyllic hilltop villages and world renowned towns - Le Mas en Rose is the perfect place to experience this Provençal paradise.

Le Mas en Rose is situated in lovely countryside just a few minutes drive from a local village with a couple of cafes, restaurants and shops. Wander around the narrow streets of the old part, admire the Hotel de Ville and medieval ramparts or go walking in the surrounding hills.

The small but lively city of Avignon (12km) is a short drive and a wonderful place to visit. Explore the winding medieval streets, experience the excellent dining opportunities and visit two UNESCO world heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge. The covered market offers all sorts of delights or head to the weekend farmers, flower and flea markets for wonderful local produce and a bargain or two. The bohemian quarter of the city, just next to the Sorgue river, has more of a village atmosphere with its artists, musicians, cafes and wine-bars.

The region is in the heart of this formidable area of vineyards, idyllic hilltop villages, world-renowned towns, and summer landscapes of sunflowers. Gordes (47km) is just one of the beautiful villages worth visiting with stunning architecture, set in the outstanding Luberon region, surrounded by lavender fields in the summer months. Or head south to the heart of the Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles and the charming town of St-Remy-de-Provence (20km) where you can soak up the true Provencal way of life, especially on markets days.

Van Gogh’s precious Arles (33km) and Baux-de-Provence (30km), one of France’s acclaimed ‘plus beaux villages’ are also within easy reach as well as a host of other pretty villages that make the region so famous and well loved.

Those looking for activity have so much on their doorstep. There is both horse-riding and golf within a short drive and both the immediate and wider area are a walkers and cyclists paradise with stunning countryside and landscapes. Older children will love kayaking in the Sorgue and there are plenty of other family friendly activities throughout the region from model railways and open castles to trekking across the tree tops and visiting a zoo.
History lovers should also visit the city of Nîmes (40km) with its fine collection of Roman remains including Maison Carrée, one of the best preserved Roman temples in the country. Just north of the city is the stunning Roman aqueduct, Pont du Gard, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Another highlight of this area is the stunning landscapes and natural beauty of the Camargue, which can be visited in a day. A beautiful combination of land, lagoon and sea with pink flamingos, wild white horses, rice fields and endless wild countryside, this natural park covers 900 square kilometres of land and beaches. Endless activities can be offered including quad biking and jeep tours across this diverse area. You can also see the traditional and interesting farms where the Gardiens (cowboys) raise bulls for the bullrings of Languedoc and Spain.

Region

Stay in and around the region of Avignon to discover picturesque villages, historic towns, Côtes du Rhône vineyards and beautiful landscapes of summer sunflowers, olive groves and rural countryside. This is a fantastic base for exploring much of Provence and beyond.

With its historic, gastronomic and cultural riches, the small city of Avignon stands proudly by the banks of the Rhône, home to vibrant markets, restaurants, wine-bars and impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites.

One of the most visited monuments of France, Le Palais des Papes is in the heart of the old city, next to the 12th century cathedral and leafy Jardin des Doms where you can admire gorgeous views of the river and Provençal countryside beyond. Soak up the rich history of Le Pont d’Avignon on a guided tour before heading over the river to capture photogenic shots of the city from île de la Barthelasse, France’s largest river island. Avignon’s little tourist road train is a great way to explore the historic city with young children.

Stock up on seasonal fruit, vegetables and regional delights at the beautiful covered market at Les Halles d’Avignon or wait for the main Saturday morning Provençal market near the 14th century Basilique Saint-Pierre. Embrace the city’s food scene across its many cafes and restaurants from the tourist haunts of Place de l’Horloge to hidden gems found on the charming side streets and shady squares of the old quarter. Avignon is also known for its Côtes du Rhône wineries and bars waiting to be discovered.

In July the 3-week long Festival d’Avignon takes over the city, a world-renowned event with contemporary performing arts, films and exhibitions taking place across theatres, cinemas and outdoor venues.

Beyond the city centre, hire bikes to cycle along part of the via Rhôna route or enjoy the landscapes of île de la Barthelasse passing farmland, orchards and vistas across the river towards Avignon’s city centre. Meanwhile, antique lovers won’t want to miss the Saturday morning brocante in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, one of Provence’s most famous flea markets, or venture further afield to the wonderful Sunday morning brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

Embrace the Provençal ambience across villages of the Vaucluse – one of our favourites is charming Pernes-les-Fontaines, loved for its many fountains and delightful market every Saturday morning and Wednesday evening in July and August. Velleron is famed for its early evening farmers’ market open throughout the year (six evenings a week from April to September) whilst Saint-Didier and Venasque are two other picture-perfect Provençal villages to discover.

Driving south instead, visit the art galleries and Wednesday morning market of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a bustling town on the edge of Les Alpilles where Vincent Van Gogh lived towards the end of his life. Enjoy lunch on a pavement terrace in the idyllic hilltop village of Eygalières (you may even spot a discreet A-list celebrity or two) or head south-west of Avignon to embrace the historic ambience of Tarascon and Beaucaire with their impressive castles overlooking the Rhône river.

Provence is a wonderful place for families with kids of all ages.  There is a wealth of characterful villages, towns and cities to discover across the region.  Visit a typical Provençal market and try some amazing new foods or simply wander around charming villages soaking up the atmosphere and admiring artists at work.

Follow the Van Gogh path around St-Rémy, looking out for the sign-boards featuring paintings he made in the village or head a little out to the archaeological site of Glanum.

Create memories by kayaking along the Sorgue or hire canoes by the magnificent Pont du Gard. Try rock-climbing in Les Alpilles or find a pony-club for younger ones. This part of Provence also offers wonderful trails for walking, cycling and horse-riding in the area.

Visit Avignon with the kids to marvel at the historic sights and take the road-train tour if you have little ones with tired legs. The city of Nîmes is also a must for history lovers with its fascinating Roman ruins.

Young and old train lovers alike will adore the model railway, the JardiTrain, just south of Carpentras or the more adventurous can discover the fantastic Tree-Top activity centres in the Luberon, Nimes or Salon-de-Provence.

Animal lovers should head to Zoo La Barben with over 600 species of animals across several hectares of land.

  • A 5 star experience and a 5 star company!!

    on 22/08/2019

Booking was very easy. Before our arrival the local agent, contacted us to check our eta and to ask if there was anything we needed. At the house we found a lovely welcome basket full of delicious things to eat, which we thought a very nice touch. The house itself was spotless and very well equipped, and the cleaner, Marielle , who came for 3 hours midweek, was absolutely charming, helpful and a real star. During our stay we had a small invasion by hornets, we contacted Tracey that night, and a man arrived first thing in the morning to deal with the problem. A completely 5 star service. So thank you Tracey and Oliver's Travels! We'd definitely book with you again.
