Location
About the surrounding area of La Maison CharmanteLa Maison Charmante is in the enchanting village of Lourmarin, in the southern part of the Luberon region around 40km north of Aix-en-Provence.
Wander out of your pretty cottage and you will reach the heart of Lourmarin in less than 200m, one of the most loved villages of the Luberon. Lourmarin is well-known for being adored by Albert Camus and nowadays it’s classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Spend time soaking up the ambience in one of the many charming street cafes and dine out in a range of excellent restaurants from simple bistros to high-end establishments. Experience the joy of the Friday morning market and pick up some wine, olive oil, herbs, honey, jewellery, soap and all sorts of other wonderful products from Provence.
In the landscapes that surround Lourmarin you will find olive groves, vineyards as well as cherry and almond trees. Head to the Durance river, around 6km, to hire canoes or kayaks, a wonderful way to discover the natural surroundings. The Étang de la Bonde is a picturesque spot where locals swim in the summer and it’s also ideal for walks through the pine forests and fishing. Horse-lovers will also find an equestrian centre a short drive away.
Then there’s other local villages to visit such as delightful Cucuron (8km) with its picturesque square and bassin, century-old plane trees, Michelin starred restaurant and a pretty Tuesday morning market. Ansouis (10km) is another one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with its beautifully preserved castle, pretty church and a further Michelin starred restaurant. Further north, you'll find other Luberon villages like Ménerbes, Bonnieux and Lacoste, all of which can be reached by car in around half an hour to forty minutes.
Look out for hikes of varying abilities from pretty vineyard trails to the more challenging Gorges de Régalon whilst cycling between villages is also very popular, including the local Pays d’Aigues circuit which covers some of the pretty southern Luberon villages and towns. Buoux is the place for rock-climbing or you may just prefer to spend your time driving around local vineyards sampling many of the excellent wines, including a couple of good wine châteaux close to Lourmarin.

Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesCycling, walking and horse-riding are all popular activities for families across the Luberon with trails to suit a variety of abilities whether it’s a stroll through local vineyards or more experienced biking between villages.
Rock-climbing is also popular close to the tiny village of Buoux as well as in the neighbouring Les Alpilles region.
Water lovers can hire canoes and kayaks for excursions along the Durance river, only a short drive away, or head further north to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the source of the Sorgue river just under an hour away.
Both Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and Salon-de-Provence are home to tree-top climbing centres with a number of activities depending on your height and age. Also close to Salon-de-Provence is a much-loved zoo in La Barben which features many hundreds of animals as well as a children’s playground.
If spending the day in Aix-en-Provence, look out for the magical Paul Cézanne carousel, spend time in one of the many large parks, take a tour on the little road train and visit one of the museums or art galleries such as the Fondation Vasarely and Planetarium Peiresc.

Wonderful stay
Overall we had a wonderful stay at La Maison Charmante. Teny, our contact was very helpful. A great location.

Two months in Lourmarin
We recently spent two months in this delightful cottage, right in the heart of one of the most beautiful villages in Provence. We had a wonderful time. The cottage itself is so cosy and warm, even during the rather cold winter this year. It is so well equipped that we wanted for nothing, and the welcome glass of champagne with Paganini playing in the background was divine. The garden is very pretty and sitting outside with a glass of wine on the warmer days was lovely.
The village is welcoming and friendly. The surrounding area is beautiful, and we enjoyed some lovely walks. We were very sad to leave and very much hope to return next year. -
Home from Home
We stayed at La Maison Charmante for two weeks this year and only regret that it couldn't have been longer. Despite its central village location, within a minute of the main street, the house is extremely quiet and private. There was no noise from either adjoining property or from the surrounding area. The house is very tastefully furnished and decorated whilst being wonderfully comfortable and easy to live in. It's well equipped for those like us who prefer to cook and eat in most of the time. The garden is beautifully maintained and, again, private with a good sized pool; enough natural shade to protect from the sun; and plenty of sitting and eating areas. This was our fifth holiday in Lourmarin and is for sure the house that we'll return to next year if it's available. Finally: we could not thank the property manager enough. She was wonderfully welcoming and tirelessly helpful.

Perfect combination of privacy and proximity
Leave the front gate and you are in the village. Behind, in the private garden you are surrounded by market gardens with views of the Grand Luberon. We spent four happy weeks here May/June 2017. The owners are clearly investing in the property and improving it over time. Before our arrival the boules court was installed. After we left the kitchen was completely re-done. The house, converted from an old factory, has great character. The living/dining area is spacious and comfortable. There is a large outdoor dining table where we had most meals shaded by a large umbrella. There are lounge chairs by the pool. The first floor bedrooms (French convention - second floor to North Americans) are large. The ones on the second floor are cozy with the quirkiness and character of old buildings. Because we were there for a month during the change of seasons we had a lot of clothes. We found the owner to be very responsive. We would certainly recommend La Maison Charmante. We are frequent visitors to this charming village and would certainly stay here again.

Magical Family Christmas
We stayed at La Maison Charmante for one week over the Christmas Holiday 2016, together with my parents, to spend the holidays with family and friends in Provence. My parents lived in Lourmarin for many years, and my husband and I married there, so this was a homecoming for us all to a place that is very dear to us. The manager of the house greeted us at the house with a wonderful bottle of local red wine, courtesy of the owners, and had beautifully decorated the courtyard, the garden, and the living/dining room for the holidays. The manager and the owners always responded to any enquiries we had without delay from our first email exchange onward. We were delighted by their warmth and sincerely expressed desire to make our stay as lovely as it could be, which it certainly was. The house truly is directly in the village, just a 3 minute walk from the bakery and cafes, but yet when in the garden, around the pool, or inside the house, it feels like one is in the middle of the countryside. The location is completely quiet and tranquil. The house, garden, and all the rooms are beautifully maintained, and exactly as presented in the photographs: the living/dining room is elegant, spacious and airy, looking out onto the lovely garden through the french windows; the kitchen is very well equipped (we hosted and cooked Christmas dinner for 8 people); the beds are wonderfully comfortable, with excellent mattresses, soft down pillows and duvets, and beautiful linen; the bathrooms are newly renovated, the water pressure in the showers is nice and strong, and there is plenty of hot water; similarly, the heaters work perfectly, so it was cozy and warm inside. Lourmarin itself of course is a beautiful village, where one can find all the typical Provencal arts and crafts, restaurants, farmer's markets, vineyards and so forth, but Lourmarin also has an interesting community, and a rich cultural life, so it's well worth the while to visit for a bit longer and to get to know. The manager lives in the village herself, and is a great resource about all the goings-on around the village and the area. For our part, we return to Lourmarin at least once a year, and very much look forward to future stays, knowing that we will be so well-received, and our comfort so kindly attended to. Un grand merci!

Great holiday!
We stayed here for two weeks and had a wonderful time. It is the perfect balance of tranquil setting whilst being touching distance to the centre of the beautiful village.

Simply Splendid!
We thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks at this lovely home in Lourmarin and we were so happy to see that the gorgeous pictures were absolutely accurate when we arrived! We had eight adults and we were all impressed - from the beautifully decorated interior, nice, comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen (we cooked several nights and one night we had the manager cater dinner - absolutely recommend this! She created delicious apps, dinner and dessert that we devoured!) to the amazing backyard with a wonderful pool and outside dining that we were able to enjoy nightly during our stay. It is clean, well-maintained (the pool guy stops by weekly) and owner/property manager were very responsive to our questions before, during and after our stay. It definitely felt like home and it was hard to leave! The location is perfect - a quick, short walk to the center of Lourmarin which is filled with shops, restaurants and a delicious bakery. Since the access on their lane doesn't allow you to park your car, we had to park the car on the main street, a very short walk from their home, which worked out just fine. We highly recommend this property and definitely hope to be back again!

Beautiful cosy village home
We loved staying at La Maison Charmante with our parents and two children. There was plenty of space for us all, and a lovely large garden with a lovely pool. So ideal. Was right in the middle of town so very convenient for dining and shopping. The home is beautifully decorated and maintained. Beds and bedding were luxurious and comfortable. The host and property manager were really welcoming and helped us make the most of our visit in the area with lots of local advice. Would definitely return for another visit, would be a wonderful place to spend a week or two in the summer!
