Location
About the surrounding area of Le Jardin ProvencaleLe Jardin Provençale is ideally located within an authentic Provence village. Useful essentials like a boulangerie, butchers, grocery store and restaurant can be reached on foot in just 5 minutes.
Other charming villages nearby include Maubec and Menerbes, which are around a 10-minute drive away. Situated at the base of the Luberon, Maubec is a tiny village filled with cobblestone streets leading up the hill towards an ancient bell tower.
Menerbes is officially one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, thanks to its medieval buildings, pretty churches and 16th-century Citadelle. Head towards the centre where you will find an ice cream shop and a market on Thursday mornings.
Gordes is another of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Just 7km away, it is home to museums, galleries and an impressive 10-century chateau. Plus, from the top of the village, which faces the Luberon, you will be rewarded with the most spectacular views.
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a well-known destination a 35-minute drive from the house. Here, water pours out of the towering cliffside and feeds the River Sorgue, which turns a striking emerald green colour and trickles through the town. It’s one of the largest springs in the world and a must-see! In addition, there’s a wonderful selection of riverside restaurants and lots of souvenir stalls.
The town of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is 11km away and definitely worth a visit, especially on Sunday mornings when the antiques market takes place. Nicknamed ‘The Provençal Venice’ the River Sorgue flows through the town, with footbridges connecting the flower-filled streets and cafés lining the waterside.
Avignon is about 45 minutes away and is famed for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Pope’s Palace and the Saint Benezet Bridge. The city also hosts a lively flea-market and has excellent dining opportunities. Head to the Pope’s Palace Gardens for a gorgeous walk away from some of the crowds.
The nearby Luberon offers a variety of walking trails through exquisite countryside. Pass prehistoric caves, old mills and abandoned villages and admire the views of Mont Ventoux, Avignon and the edge of the French Alps as you hike. If cycling is your thing then there are also plenty of scenic routes in the Luberon. The Ochre circuit is very popular, as is La Veloroute du Calavon, which starts just 12km away from Le Jardin Provençale.

Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThe region is a fantastic place for families to visit, with plenty of activities on offer to keep kids entertained. Hire kayaks near L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and soak in the scenery as you paddle along the river. There are also canoes and kayaks for hire at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, as well as an accrobranching (obstacle) course through the trees.
The Luberon offers an extensive network of walking paths for all abilities. Kids will love stumbling upon ancient villages, old mills and prehistoric caves as you hike through the vineyards, orchards and forests.
Jarditrain is 25km away and is an incredible model railway village landscaped with mini bridges, tunnels, waterfalls and lakes. It’s extremely family-friendly, and kids can take part in fun workshops.
Boarding the Little Tourist Train is a stress-free way to explore Avignon’s famous sites, including the Pont D’Avignon, with children. The lively city also has great selection of restaurants and museums, while a boat trip along the Rhône is enjoyable for the whole family.
