Overview

Pool Villa/House Ideal for Kids Laptop Friendly Workspace Parking Space

Located in the tiny hamlet of Les Gros, just 5km drive outside Gordes, this spacious, three-bedroomed Luberon house offers you a traditional Provençal welcome, complete with plenty of terrific spots to relax and admire the striking panorama of the Vaucluse hills.

A beautiful retreat that embraces its rich architectural history, while delivering comfort inside and out, the exquisitely furnished Maison Baroque stylishly delivers the quintessential Provence countryside experience. As you arrive, passing Les Gros’ ancient chapel, this authentic Luberon home immediately begins to enchant, with its superbly maintained stone walls and painted window shutters so typical of this magical region.

As you enter, into the spacious open-plan dining room, the attention to detail paid to the décor becomes immediately apparent. The thoughtful furniture choices suit the character of the property perfectly, along with bright walls and curtains at the large patio doors, conducive to maximising natural light, giving a homely feel before you’ve unpacked.

The dining table seats up to six guests, while a large comfortable sofa sits in front of the television and fireplace. A broad, marble-topped breakfast bar forms the partition between the lounge area and this house’s well-equipped kitchen. Cook up a feast in the spacious kitchen and dine al-fresco on the terrace, just outside the lounge’s patio doors. A cosy conservatory area at the end of the kitchen offers just one of Maison Baroque’s many delightful spaces to relax in, while the separate office space with a bureau and sofa is ideal if you need to bring out your laptop during your stay.

The three double bedrooms are all tastefully furnished, with large, comfortable beds and beautiful thick, stone walls, keeping the interior from becoming too hot. The master bedroom, with en-suite bathroom, opens to a balcony with spectacular Luberon views. The second bedroom has an equally stunning view from its window, with the stylish third bedroom and main bathroom completing the well-configured first floor.

Exiting the lounge takes you directly onto the upper terrace, with a dining table seating six, along with two deckchairs from which to absorb the picturesque hillside vista. Head down the stone steps to discover the beautifully planted garden, where you will find extra dining space in the shade of a mulberry tree. The ten-metre long pool, with large steps for easy access into the water, has two comfortable sun loungers at its side and is bordered on two sides by the garden’s fabulous stone wall.

The villages of the Vaucluse département are famed for many reasons. Grandiose hillside vistas that are as beautiful looking in as out, boutique shops, artisanal markets full of the most incredible Provençal produce, innovative and traditional restaurants alike, not to mention the wine and weather! Take your best walking shoes to Gordes to explore its labyrinthine pathways through streets of stunning limestone buildings. As well as the famous terraces at L’Orangerie and La Trinquette, many of Gordes’ restaurants offer tables with views as incredible as the cuisine. In keeping with Gordes’ rich artistic heritage, you will discover many independent shops with work from local artists, along with terrific boutiques, including one belonging to the world-famous Provence cosmetics house, L’Occitane.

Tuesday is market day in Gordes, with its glorious explosion of colour and flavour beginning in the castle square. Local olive oils, lavender honeys and artisanal breads abound, along with Tricolore-inspired displays of tomatoes, basil and rosemary. Head another ten minutes northeast from Gordes to the equally stunning village of Murs, where you will find countless spots for a picnic with your market goods.

Two terrific museums are located close to Maison Baroque, with the Museum of Olive Oil and Lavender Museum both within a 10-minute drive. These superb attractions provide visitors with fascinating insights into both the past and present of two of the region’s most famous products.

Based within Le Château du Bois Provence and open from approximately April to December, La Musée de la Lavande offers an experience as gentle and pleasing as the flower itself. With gloriously aromatic guided tours and interactive workshops available, you can enjoy a unique, hands-on experience with this world-famous and versatile flower.

Region

With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.

Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.

Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.

To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.

Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.

The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.

For those keen to explore this region’s rich agrarian heritage, under a quarter of an hour’s drive from Maison Baroque and popular with many visiting families, is the open-air interactive museum Village des Bories, featuring a preserved network of eighteenth century stone huts. These huts, or bories, used for a multitude of agricultural purposes, were built by Gordien agricultural workers, using cutting-edge masonry techniques.

Cycling in the Luberon region is a wonderful experience that plenty of family groups return to the area for each year. If you’re not taking your own bikes, there is no need to miss out – the Luberon region has several bike rental companies, leasing trekking bikes, mountain bikes, E-bikes and E-MTB bikes, with some providing a free delivery and pick-up service to your holiday base. Personalised guided rides are also available, with specially designed routes tailored to your preference.

A thirty-minute drive from Maison Baroque, outdoor adventure park Colorado Aventures, is open from approximately April to November. This popular day out with many families visiting the area has plenty of fun activities, including outdoor laser tag, bungee jumping and even a family accrobranche course.

Super maison et localisation au top

  • We would definitely return - just beautiful!

We had a wonderful week staying in this property. It is spacious, beautifully furnished, and the pool is just fabulous. There was plenty of space for our group of six both indoors and outside, and we made good use of all areas. The house is 5km and an easy drive to Gordes, and lots of other great villages to visit nearby. We would definitely return here - just beautiful!
