Overview
In an idyllic pocket of Provence, surrounded by rich countryside and set in nine acres of land sits Maison Emile. With medieval towns nearby and outstanding natural beauty all around, this enchanting house offers the best of rural Provençal living.
Once a 17th-century farmhouse, Maison Emile has been lovingly converted into a laid-back yet elegant home featuring a large dining room, charming country-style kitchen and cosy living room. Here you will find the classic blue shutters, terracotta roof, wooden beams and stone walls that are so typical of dwellings in this region.
Up to 12 guests (+2 children, on request) can be accommodated in nine tastefully decorated bedrooms spread across the main house and adjoining barn. Two of the barn’s bedrooms are accessible via the central courtyard while the other two are accessed from the living room and can be configured as twin beds or doubles to suit the needs of your group.
Outside, there are exquisite gardens and a meadow filled with cherry, fig, almond, apple and pear trees. While away the days basking in the sunshine, playing boules and table tennis and taking refreshing dips in the pool. In the evenings fire up the barbecue and enjoy a meal on the outdoor terrace, perhaps before hitting a few balls on the floodlight tennis court.
The stunning market town of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is just a 10-minute drive away. Known for its antique stalls and canals, it’s a lovely place to wander around and boasts many little waterside cafés, restaurants and boutiques, plus useful supermarkets for stocking up.
Medieval Carpentras is also known for its popular street markets and is 25km away, while the historic city of Avignon can be reached by car in just 45 minutes. Lively and packed full of interesting things to do and places to eat, it’s a fantastic city to visit.
A 37km drive takes you to the Alpilles Natural Regional Parc where you can marvel at the region’s incredible scenery and immerse yourself in nature as you hike along forest trails. And to witness more of Provence’s famous landscapes, head to the shockingly purple lavender fields of Sault, just under an hour’s drive from Maison Emile.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison EmileProvence is littered with picturesque hilltop villages and many of the most scenic can be easily reached from Maison Emile.
Built on a network of canals with pretty footbridges, waterside cafés and timeworn mills, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is packed with character and charm. Just a 10-minute drive away, there are convenient amenities like boulangeries and supermarkets in addition to a great selection of restaurants for nights spent eating out. Be sure to visit on a Sunday to experience the town’s renowned antiques market and perhaps pick out a souvenir!
A little further away sits Carpentras, another town with a bustling flea market. Held on a Friday, some 350 stalls stock everything from black truffles to shoes. The town, which can be reached by car in 30 minutes, is also filled with medieval relics, including the Orange Gateway and 15th-century Saint Siffrein Cathedral.
Just 36km away, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is crammed full of cellars and shops selling bottles of the famous red wine and hosting tasting sessions. As well as wine, the fortified village also boasts an impressive 14th-century castle. Enjoy sweeping views of the vineyards below from its ramparts.
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, once home to legendary painter Vincent Van Gogh, is 35km away and well worth a trip, while Apt, known for its delicious cuisine, can be reached in 30km.
Two of Provence’s most dynamic cities, Avignon and Arles, are just 37km and 58km away respectively. With two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a lively centre, Avignon is a fascinating place to visit. Soak up the city’s atmosphere from the main Place de l’Horloge or stroll around the bohemian quarter next to the River Sorgue, where you can find live music, trendy bars and wonderful restaurants.
Arles, which is known for inspiring many of Van Gogh’s paintings, features a fantastic Saturday market and many historic treasures, including a Roman amphitheatre and Roman baths.
As well as delightful towns and enthralling cities, this region offers scenic countryside and unspoilt landscapes. Discover the magnificent lavender fields at Sault, just 48km away, and immerse yourself in nature as you hike through the forests and ravines at Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles, 37km away. The Luberon range, which can be explored on foot or by bike, is a 40-minute car journey away and offers exquisite natural beauty.

Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.

Canoeing along the River Sorgue is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy, while Wave Island near Carpentras is sure to entertain water-lovers. Complete with a surf simulator, slides, wave pools and rides, this water park also features Europe’s largest lazy lake.
Head to Arles to visit the Fondation Van Gogh fine art museum, the Musee Reattu which is home to one of Picasso’s last paintings and Luma Arles, an incredible building and cultural complex devoted to the arts. The city’s Roman amphitheatre and baths are also sure to capture the imagination of younger visitors.
Family-friendly Avignon is brimming with interesting sites like the Pope’s Palace and The Saint Benezet Bridge and has a great selection of restaurants, shops and museums. A ride on the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus or Little Tourist Train is an easy way to explore the city with children.
Away from the hustle and bustle of cities, the Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles offers pleasant walks and trails through the pine forests, kids will also love running around the vibrant lavender fields around Sault. For parents, it’s an excellent place to take some treasured family photos.

What a find! A beautiful house perfectly suited to hosting large gatherings. We had 17 family the first week and 16 friends for another and everyone loved it. The house is comfortable, well furnished and has everything you could need provided. Wonderful outside dining area where we ate every meal. Sporting facilities gave everyone things to do but there is so much space that anyone could find a quiet corner if needed. Krissy, who looks after the property, was a first class manager and a great source of knowledge. The maids, Katia and Sylvie, who we booked each morning, were delightful, friendly and keen to help in any way they could. Also used Charlotte Riva, the chef who was recommended to us, and she was outstanding. I highly recommend this charming house in such a gorgeous area of Provence. Brilliant!

Outstanding experience!
Myself and a group of friends spent a week at this beautiful villa to celebrate my sixtieth birthday. I have nothing but praise for every aspect of the experience. We were met and checked in with efficiency and friendliness and nothing was to much trouble for Krissy who looked after us. The Villa was spotlessly clean and has both charm and style. It is spacious and has a fantastic outside dining area with BBQ where we held my birthday celebration. There is also a smaller outside dining area which is in direct sunlight where we all gathered each morning for breakfast. The pool also has a delightful dining area which is covered and each evening we would often sit and chat over a glass of wine together. The grounds and gardens are also beautifully maintained. There had been careful attention to detail to ensure that every aspect of our stay was catered for. We were even gifted two bottles of rose wine for our arrival evening along with a refreshment pack. I have absolutely no negatives to share. This is a five star property with five star services and we all had a five star experience! Thank you Mark and Krissy who manage the property. You have an outstanding operation and helped along with this beautiful house, to ensure that I had a very memorable sixtieth birthday experience!

Wonderful
I have spent Christmas with my extended family at Maison Emile (7 adults + 5 teenage children). We've had a great time in this huge, very well-appointed and charming house. A Christmas tree, indoor string lights and several potted cyclamens immediately made us feel at home. It was very much like staying at a friend's place.

Idyllic rural getaway
An easy hop from Marseille takes you to this delightful Provencal mas. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, it is in fact conveniently close to excellent supermarkets, but also within a short distance of some strikingly lovely small towns. The immediate surroundings are quiet lanes, perfect for cycling. The sheltered position of the house with its charming courtyard provides the perfect shaded spot when the midday sun is overhead, but also means late-night suppers can be enjoyed without resorting to fleeces. The swimming-pool area is attractively landscaped with plenty of sunloungers and umbrellas and the view from the terrace above is the ideal spot for sunset drinks. The house is tastefully furnished in an understated style, the kitchen is well thought-out and the bathrooms are definitely 21st century.

Wonderful! Beautiful inside and out
A wonderful place to stay. Beautifully designed interiors in a Provence style with sumptuous, comfortable beds and bedding and great dining areas inside and outside in the enchanting courtyard. The tennis court, swimming pool, boules court and table tennis and the grounds are all in excellent condition and beautifully maintained. The surrounding area is fascinating and delightful to explore. We hired a local cook, recommended by the owners, who brought in delicious meals. Unbeatable holiday and we will go back! A real treat!
