Overview
Mas de L'Estragon is an exceptional stone manor house sitting on 70 acres of land located in the heart of Provence, between the villages of Gordes and Murs in Southeastern Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur – well known for its charming countryside, rolling hills and colourful market towns.
This stunning home was built on the foundations of one of the buildings that used to belong to the 12th-century Sénanque Abbey - a former Cistercian monastery that it is now a place visited by tourists for its blooming lavender gardens. The expansive property is surrounded by 70 acres of unspoiled forest, pungent fields and fruit and almond groves, ideal for those who love to unwind in picturesque settings and forget the sense of time. Luckily, the breathtaking views of uninterrupted forests and Mount Sainte-Victoire can be observed from multiple vantage points, including the main tower.
This eight-bedroom, seven-bathroom home sleeps up to 16 guests – in rooms that are modern with bleached wood and simple fabrics, while others have oak wood furniture and paintings encrusted in gold frames. The farmhouse-style kitchen offers all the equipment to make your stay feel like never leaving the comforts of your own home, designed for preparing a tasty dish from ingredients sourced at local markets and enjoying it in the dining room or on the outdoor terrace. The two living rooms or TV room are the places for the entire household to gather in the evenings with a glass of wine or hot chocolate, while the gym will keep you fit and guilt-free on your holiday.
The path to the house is truly enchanting – the main road takes you onto a private garden drive where you descend into a small valley, passing a 500-year-old oak tree standing tall and proud, before reaching the majestic home, made from honey-coloured Provençal stone. From the central round tower, two large wings open to welcome you into an atmosphere of elegant serenity. The expansive lawn is full of trees, bushes, and flower beds, offering plenty of shade as well as enough space for exploring. From the back terrace, you have a perfect view of the pool, built with natural stone around and descending steps for easy access. With such a lush backdrop, it’s almost effortless to spend an entire day lazing around the house – whether you’re dining al-fresco late into the balmy evenings on the large terrace area, cooling off on hot afternoons in the enticing swimming pool or exploring every nook and cranny of the enchanting property.
Should you tire of relaxing, the nearby village of Gordes (5km) has all the local amenities you need for a comfortable stay, such as authentic cafés and restaurants, winding streets, cute little shops, and a weekday market selling everything from lavender products and artisanal cheeses to traditional souvenirs.
The other village, Murs (4km) is set among the vineyards, orchards and cherry trees of the Côtes du Ventoux, a famous wine-making area. Here you can taste the local vintages and new grapes in ambient French bistros and wine bars and admire the centuries-old architecture.
Larger cities such as Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are also a driving distance away, and each is brimming with sightseeing opportunities, an upscale dining scene and fun attractions. Notably, Avignon has numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites that will keep you occupied studying French history and culture, while Aix-en Provence is full of lush parks and museums.

On warm days, have a picnic near the Pont d'Avignon running over the river Rhône or head to the city’s central square to wine and dine in one of the many restaurants and typical French bistros spilling onto the cobbled sidewalks.
The pretty town of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is also a comfortable drive away. Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere are plenty of opportunities for children to roam free in the Luberon Natural Park, well known for its array of walking and hiking trails taking you through a varied landscape ranging from farmland scattered with windmills and farmhouses to mountainous peeks and cedar forests. Take your trip up a notch by hiring mountain bikes or guided tours, many of which allow you to travel to untouched places not many tourists know about.
One of the nearby paths perfect for all levels is Les Gorges de Véroncle hiking area with walking trails snaking through unique rock formations and typical country estates. Another must-see sightseeing trip around Gordes little ones will surely love are Les Caves du Palais Saint-Firmin, a village with mills and silos carved out in caves under the ground.
Whether you’re after a change of scenery or find yourself in Provence during the rare rainy season, head to Avignon’s museums to learn something new about the country’s history and culture. These institutions will prove as a great option for getting a culture fix and are sure to entertain children of all ages. Peek inside the majestic Pope’s Palace, admire the architecture at Musée du Petit Palais or head to one of the oldest museums in the city housed in a spectacular 18th-century hotel, Musée Calvet.
Aix-en Provence is another city offering plenty of family-friendly activities. Parks such as Parc Jourdan, Parc de la Torse and Parc Rambot are simply fabulous for spreading out a picnic blanket and enjoying some uninterrupted family time in the presence of dog walkers and other tourists embracing a slower pace of life.
