Overview
As you head up the Cypress-lined driveway and catch a glimpse of the swathes of lavender, you’ll realise what a special place this is. This elegant stone home, a short distance from one of the many idyllic villages of the Luberon, is an incredible place from which to explore this enchanting part of Provence.
Villa Borie has been lovingly restored by its current owners who have renovated the home with style and great taste, featuring the perfect blend of Provençal and contemporary furnishings and original artwork across the house.
The beautifully preserved stone fire-place is the central feature of both the living and dining room whilst French doors open up to one of the glorious stone terraces. All three bedrooms feature queen-sized beds, Provençal wardrobes and dressers and doors opening on to the pool, gardens or the fields of lavender. There are two sumptuous bathrooms, one with a roll-top bath, the other featuring an in-ground Italian shower.
Keen chefs can create a feast using the very best produce from local markets in the contemporary kitchen with high-end Smeg appliances plus an island and breakfast table, allowing for a convivial atmosphere as meals are prepared.
In the evening you can seek solace with a glass of local wine on a stone bench surrounded by lavender or enjoy an aperitif on the lit-up terrace by the old Borie, a stone hut where shepherds would have once sought shelter on stormy nights. Or simply continue to take in the breathtaking views of the Luberon mountain from the south-facing terrace.
In the beautiful grounds, by the rockery filled with flowers and fruit trees, there’s a dazzling and wonderfully maintained swimming pool with deckchairs and loungers around the poolside terrace, the perfect place to spend long summery days in the peace of the verdant surroundings.
In the lovely local village, you will find restaurants, cafes and charming shops. Explore the steep narrow streets with beautiful old stone houses, many of which have been restored, and reach the fascinating ruins of a castle dating back to the 11th Century. Furthermore, within a short distance you can drive to a wealth of other idyllic Luberon villages such as Bonnieux, Ménerbes and Roussillon as well as Van Gogh’s beloved Gordes (17km), one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages.
The Luberon Natural Park offers an ideal setting for walking, horse-riding and cycling amongst spectacular landscapes of hills, olive groves and vineyards whilst wine lovers will appreciate the amazing vineyards and wine cellars across the region. Don’t miss the weekly food market in nearby Apt, one of the most famous in the area, whilst the well-known brocante markets in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue are a must for antique lovers.
Famous Avignon, the capital of Provence, and Aix-en-Provence, one of France's most beautiful university towns, are just over an hour away or head to Les Alpilles Natural Park with Saint-Rémy-de-Provence or Les Baux-de-Provence for a memorable day out.
At the end of the day you’ll be pleased to return to the tranquillity and beauty of your own exceptional place at Villa Borie.

There are breathtaking views of the Luberon mountain from the south-facing terrace.

Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.
Kids

Owner Profile
How long have you owned the property?
Since July 2004.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The beautiful view over the Luberon mountain, the extensive grounds, and the cool, open-plan arrangement of the single-level interior.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The house was built in 1985 in the traditional style, so no history as such.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Visit the local villages and markets including Lacoste, Bonnieux, Menerbes, Gordes (one of the most visited villages in France), Roussillon, Goult and Lourmarin (Peter Mayle, who wrote a Year in Provence lived in both Menerbes and Lourmarin). Also, visit the many wineries in the local area, Avignon and Aix en Provence, which are both nearby, and Cassis on the south coast near Marseille.
Really eat?
There are some very good restaurants in the local area including La Bartavelle at Goult, Le Mas des Herbes Blanches at Joucas, La Bastide de Capelongue at Bonnieux, Le Mas Tourteron at Les Imberts, La Bastide de Marie at Menerbes and Le Moulin de Lourmarin at Lourmarin.
Really see?
The view of the villages, countryside and Mont Ventoux from the top of the Luberon mountain.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Each day of the week there is a produce and artisanal market in a different village in the local area.

Hard to leave this beautiful place
We can't add much more to the previous few reviews other than to reiterate how beautiful, peaceful and special this place is. It is an excellent base to visit the many wonderful hilltop towns nearby. Leaving was very hard.

Quintessential Provençal Property
From the cypress lined driveway to the lavender fields surrounding the house, this property is everything we wanted from our time in Provence. We were greeted on arrival and made to feel at home. The house is spacious and well-equipped, beds were comfortable and showers had excellent water pressure. The hum of the cicadas was the only noise other than the rare car passing down the dirt road. Our evenings here were spent dining outside and enjoying the pool. The quiet and the lavender scented air made for very good nights' sleep. The property is only a short walk from the exceedingly charming village of Lacoste which is the home to a SCAD satellite campus, offering unexpected art installations. We have already discussed renting Villa Borie again, it was a delight.

Private villa with beautiful grounds and surroundings
Open the French doors and lay on the bed, ahead of you in your eyeline are rows of lavender and the Luberon hills in the background. A perfect Provence image. Tucked away down country unpaved lanes, it is quite private without feeling too secluded. The medieval hilltop towns of Menerbes and Lacoste are very close, just 10 and 5 minutes drive away, 20 minutes to the Sunday market at Coustellet and 15 minutes from restaurants in Bonnieux. When the sun is hot you have the pool and the veranda is always a great place to relax and drink wine till sunset accompanied with the din of cicadas in the trees and the fuzz of bees frolicking in the lavender. Very idyllic. Inside, the rooms are very tastefully presented, two bathrooms, one bath and the place is overall very spacious. Wifi works well from my experience. We also enjoyed the ping pong (which all French holiday homes seem to have?) and the bouledrome. You can set a great ambience in the evening with lights for the fountain, veranda, bouledrome and pool. Kitchen is well equipped.

Idyllic location
This house is in a perfect location in the Luberon and blissfully quiet but within striking distance of all the attractions. Found it difficult at times to leave the pool and beautiful gardens.
