Pass swathes of summer lavender as you approach this inviting holiday home in the heart of the Luberon National Park. Villa Verriere is for guests seeking peace and privacy in a remote setting yet only 3.5km from hilltop Roussillon, one of France’s most beautiful villages.

Set in 20,000m2 of private grounds, this is such a glorious location surrounded by pine forest, vines and landscapes so typical of the Luberon. Built in a Provençal style, this rustic home is designed for spending genuine time together with your family or friends whether chatting over your morning coffee in the flower-filled garden, dining al-fresco in the shade of the covered terrace or relaxing by the swimming pool as the kids splash around and practice their strokes.

Villa Verriere comfortably sleeps up to 7 guests across its four first-floor bedrooms including two doubles with en suite bathrooms and private terraces. Downstairs there is a brilliantly equipped kitchen with doors opening out to the shaded dining terrace alongside a traditional lounge with a grand Provençal fireplace.

Despite the feeling of solitude, Roussillon is just a short drive away (there is also a lovely walking path that leads to the village for the most adventurous). It is such a gorgeous village to explore – head out early before the tourists arrive to truly soak up its enchanting ambience. There are restaurants, little shops and a Thursday morning market. On the edge of the village, follow the marked walking trails, Le Sentier des Ocres, then reward yourself with an ice-cream - flavours in one glacier often include lavender, peach, melon and other delicious flavours inspired by Provence!

Elsewhere, drive to picture-perfect villages from famous Ménerbes and Gordes to slightly lesser known Goult and Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt. Across the Luberon, seek out atmospheric markets, Michelin starred restaurants, wonderful vineyards and the most glorious walking, hiking and cycling trails. This is iconic Provence at its best with landscapes of forest, cherry orchards, vines and idyllic perched villages.

Meanwhile, if you can find the time, experience the antique stores and Sunday morning brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, canoe along the Sorgue River near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, visit the lavender distilleries of Sault and admire the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon in this captivating part of southern France.

Villa Verriere is in the heart of the Luberon National Park set in a landscaped garden surrounded by 20,000m2 of private grounds. Here you are just south of Roussillon, one of France’s officially classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Marseille and Avignon are the nearest airports or arrive by train into Gare d’Avignon TGV (Paris to Avignon is 2 hours 40 minutes by the fast train services).

The stunning red-hued village of Roussillon is around 3.5km away – keen walkers note there is a beautiful path heading towards the village or it is a short drive. Roussillon is home to a good grocery store and bakery as well as some lovely restaurants – head there early to soak up the beauty of the village over breakfast before the many visitors arrive. On the edge of the village is Le Sentier des Ocres, two marked walking paths leading you through the former ochre quarry and pine trees. A little further afield, admire more glorious ochre landscapes as you follow hiking paths through Le Colorado Provençal around half an hour away.

This is a great base for visiting many other idyllic villages of the Luberon including Ménerbes (14km), Gordes (11.5km), Bonnieux (10km) and Lourmarin (22km). There are so many pretty villages slightly off the tourist track as well such as picturesque Goult (6.5km), a hidden jewel of the region, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt (14.5km) loved for its cherry orchards, and Cucuron (30km) with its café terraces and ancient plane trees around the village’s bassin and a Michelin starred restaurant (indeed, there are many excellent places to eat across the region). Gastronomes will also appreciate the atmospheric Saturday morning market in Apt, one of the largest in this part of Provence.

Beyond the Luberon, spend the day visiting the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon (45km), experience the antique stores and Sunday morning brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (25km), canoe along the river near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (25km) or soak up the ambience of Aix-en-Provence (62km) just over an hour away by car.

Region

With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.

Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.

Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.

To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.

Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.

The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.

Best Suited For: All Ages

Be enchanted by the red-hued village of Roussillon – follow the beautiful marked walking paths on the edge of the village, Le Sentier des Ocres, before rewarding yourself with an ice-cream from the heart of the village (look out for lavender flavoured ice-cream)!

The Luberon is loved for its wonderful scenery which can be explored on foot, horse-back (or horse-drawn carriage rides) and by bike with a range of cycling trails including the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a voie verte that follows a former railway line (mostly car free).

Colorado Aventures (20km) is a good-place for tree-top trails and other activities, close to the incredible landscapes of Le Colorado Provençal. Discover more tree-top adventures close to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse as well as canoeing/kayaking along the Sorgue River.

Meanwhile, other family attractions in Provence include Zoo Barben and the theme parks Parc Grimmland and Le Village des Automates, all around an hour away heading south. Alternatively, just east of Avignon, drive to Parc Spirou Provence and its neighbouring Wave Island waterpark, perhaps passing Grottes de Thouzon en route.

Reviews

  • The house was great, the gardens and location were fabulous

    on 21/07/2024

The house was great, the gardens and location were fabulous, and the pool was simply amazing, we really enjoyed it! The Kitchen had everything we needed, it was fabulous. The only thing we could say we would like would be slightly more comfortable mattresses. We would stay again though, most definitely!

And while we didn’t try any of your recommended restaurants (we should have though), as we seemed wander around and eat out randomly and so we weren’t impressed at those random eateries, we did find a real gem on our last night, the new restaurant just down the road should be highly commended, La Table d'Egenia (near Le Pont Julien), I think you should try it, the food and wine was amazing, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the chef has some real talent, I would compare it to some great restaurants here in Ireland. It was fabulous!

  • Would love to come back next year!

    on 11/07/2024

We enjoyed our stay very much and would love to come back next year. The house was very clean and the garden and the pool was very well maintained. Also, the kitchen was well equipped and of course the most important asses for us is the Nespresso machine. Internet was working very well!

  • Beautiful house

    on 04/07/2024

Beautiful house, very near to all places of interest! The property has a lot of land around so very private...no neighbours, perfect for a relaxing holiday! We will come back!

  • An Exceptionally Good Holiday

    on 22/06/2024

We had an exceptionally good holiday. The house is situated perfectly in the mids of green vines and forests which permits even naked swimming. The pool was great and we used it every day. The weather was 100% on our side a part from one storm. The house is perfectly equipped. Everything is available. We had a great time cooking and taking the aperitif. Overall I would rank the house 9 out of 10!

  • Superb stay

    on 08/06/2024

Superb stay. I would like to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay, everything was perfect!!! The place is really sublime, in the heart of nature, everything we were looking for. We also liked the interior of the house, it is perfectly equipped. My husband was delighted with this surprise for his 60th birthday, and loved enjoying these moments shared with our children in this idyllic setting. Regarding restaurant advice, we went to the café de la poste in Goult, very good and a very pleasant village. Thank you again for this dream week under the sun of Provence. We will definitely be back. Our eldest son would also like to come back with friends.

  • Perfect

    on 29/05/2024

It is actually very difficult to write a lengthy review because it all fits into one word - perfect! Check in and check out were ok, and the villa itself is really fabulous (plus well maintained and fully equipped). We really enjoyed our holiday here!

  • A fantastic time

    on 25/05/2024

We had a fantastic time here. The house was so lovely and comfortable and our kids enjoyed the afternoon pool time every day. The location of the house was also very good. We visited all the gorgeous surrounding towns. We will hope to comeback again in the future!

  • A Perfect Retreat

    on 26/04/2024

Villa Verriere was a perfect retreat and we thought the villa was beautiful and in such a quiet and peaceful location. It was close to all the places we were interested in visiting and we had a wonderful holiday. Thank you again for a great holiday and some wonderful memories!

  • A great holiday!

    on 11/04/2024

Villa Verriere was a lovely surprise for us as we were not expecting to be so isolated but having just come from the chaos of Cannes we were grateful to be in the beautiful countryside of the Luberon. The Villa is exceptionally well equipped with everything one needs for cooling meals and the barbecue is a good size gas option! Loved the Provincial colourful crockery too! The beautiful large pool was a bonus for the children and we spent many days just being at home relaxing and playing pool games! Our grandchildren's swimming abilities came along in leaps and bounds. The garden & grounds were beautiful and very private and the Villa accommodated our family of six very comfortably for our 2 week stay. All in all a great holiday!

  • We had a great time!

    on 01/04/2024

We had a great time! First one week only my husband and me, then our 2 adult children came for another week. So much space, beautiful garden and pool, very calm and surrounded by nature, and only a few minutes drive from Roussillon, Bonnieux and Menerbes. For shopping we went to Coustellet which is just 10 minutes away with the big Sunday market and the Super U where they have everything. Saturday market in Apt was also good and of course all the small markets in the villages around. So much to do and see, but it was also very nice to stay at home and taste the wine of the local winemakers!

  • Super!

    on 25/03/2024

Superb stay. We were delighted to be able to "find" Villa Verriere again, after 6 years of absence! The house and the garden are still beautiful and very well maintained. The improvements made since the last time are all SUPER (swimming pool, solarium, upstairs shower, kitchen ...) and further improve the comfort and pleasure of the stay. In short, what happiness!

  • Beautiful Setting

    on 02/03/2024

I fell in love with the property the moment I arrived, the villa and it’s beautiful setting ooze serenity and peacefulness. Perfectly situated both for long walks and enjoying the wider Luberon, this wonderful retreat beckons you to slow down, listen and relax. Thank you!

  • Great House

    on 18/11/2023

Great house, very natural surroundings, everything is really nearby, very nice in October with all autumn colours, hope to be back soon and then in spring or summer to see how it is then!

  • We loved the house!

    on 20/10/2023

I wanted to let you know how much I loved your house! As we arrived and came up the drive it was wonderful to see the house reveal itself, in such a beautiful setting. And then I really love the way that you have decorated the house. You have done an amazing job mixing antique furniture in with modern comfort, and then re-using the old pieces in a modern way - like the desk in the guest room. I think that the whole effect is wonderful and I just wanted to let you know how much I loved what you have done. And I can see the care and love that you have put into putting it together- and I really appreciated it! We had such a lovely 2 weeks there and we would love to come back. Many thanks again!

  • I didn't want to leave!

    on 16/10/2023
