Overview
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a delightful town set amidst the Alpilles mountains, offering cultural and historic attractions, a great range of shops and restaurants and wide-open countryside within easy reach. Maison Gilbert is located just 800m away from the heart of the town in a residential area and is therefore a fantastic base for a holiday with family or friends.
The villa is a recently renovated period home which is set on one floor in a large gated garden. The owners have maintained the original parts of the home but also added in vast windows and folding doors so that the living spaces and the garden can flow seamlessly together. Natural light floods the open-plan communal areas which comprise of a living room with a feature fireplace and a well-stocked library which leads through to a contemporary kitchen. There is an additional TV and play room too which is good for older kids and teens who may wish for a bit of independence while you unwind with a glass of wine on the terrace.
There are four bedrooms available to choose from when it is time to sleep. One of the rooms is set within a separate annexe and boasts a living room and en-suite bathroom. The other three rooms are all beautifully decorated, double, en-suite rooms where you can recharge after a busy day.
From every room you will be able to see the stunning garden which spans 1500m². The outdoor space has been designed so that you can spend time in different zones depending on the time of day. Early on you may like to read on the lawn or peruse the vegetable garden and in the heat of the day you could be tempted to take a dip in the private pool. By evening time, the well-lit, covered terrace is the ideal spot for dining al-fresco or chatting the night away on the outdoor sofas.
When you need to go grocery shopping or would like to go out for lunch then the centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a stone’s throw away, though a few of the shops and cafes are much closer. It is a charming town with tree-lined boulevards and a huge selection of amenities and eateries. The town has a rich history and today you can see aspects of Roman, medieval and Renaissance life as you wander the pretty streets. Some of the must-see sights include the incredible ruins of the Roman city of Glanum and the 11th century Romanesque Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery. The town is also a hub for artists who visit to see locations painted by Vincent van Gogh or to purchase art works from little studios owned by local artists.
If you would like to visit a bustling city for the day then Arles and Avignon are both under 30km away. Or if you would prefer a sleepy village, try Les Baux-de-Provence which is only 10km away from the villa.
You can also find hiking and walking trails, limestone bouldering routes and mountain scenery at the nearby Regional Park of the Alpilles.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison GilbertMaison Gilbert is in the perfect location for a holiday in Provence. Only a few minutes’ walk (no pavement) from the centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and within easy reach of woodlands, mountain walking routes and tranquil hilltop villages, there is plenty to see and do here without having to travel far.
This area is a great place to stay for those who love spending time outdoors in nature. Whether you are daring enough to hike to La Caume at the top of the Alpilles mountains or you would prefer a picnic in the woods, there is lots of open parkland close to the house.
If you have a golfer in your party then a lovely place to spend an afternoon is the Manville estate (10km away). The estate has a wonderful 18-hole golf course and for those who are not as keen on golf, there are also expansive grounds and a luxury spa to enjoy. Another way to explore Provence’s natural landscape is to take a tour of a local olive grove or vineyard where you can try some samples and often enjoy lunch.
If you would like to do a spot of shopping, visit a museum or dine al-fresco in a pretty square then all you have to do is walk 800m from the house in to the centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This fantastic town has all of the amenities you will need during your trip and a range of attractions too. Saint- Rémy is visited more by locals than tourists, so you can get a true feel of Provencal life here. You can choose to shop in the supermarkets, artisan shops or at the huge market where you can taste local cheeses, stock up on ingredients for dinner or purchase handicrafts. The town also has a rather special chocolate shop owned by a famous chocolatier so maybe this will tempt you as you wander around the picturesque streets.
If you are interested in history then you cannot miss the huge archaeological site on the outskirts of Saint- Rémy which is the former Roman town of Glanum. The ruins of a bath house, mausoleum, a triumphal arch and family homes from over 2000 years ago can be explored here. Just opposite is the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery which is an impressive and enchanting building. The monastery was built in the 11th century and is often visited due to it being home to artist Vincent van Gogh for a year, during which time he created over 100 works of art. You can see some of the places he was inspired by and learn more about his life by following a free audio tour around town. There are also a number of museums and galleries you could visit including a graphic art gallery, photography gallery and a local history museum.
For something a little more unusual you could drive to the perfume museum which is fascinating place 14km away from town. At the museum you can learn about perfume making, discover the vast collection of essential oils or buy some gifts at the boutique. Afterwards you can enjoy a walk around the pristine botanical gardens.
There are many more beautiful villages, towns and cities you can visit nearby; the hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence and its castle are 10km away while the historic city of Avignon which was the former home of the papacy is 26km away by car.
