Overview
Located in the picture-perfect region of Provence in the South of France, you will find Maison Macaron enveloped by fields of lavender and olive groves.
This beautifully restored home is an idyll, sumptuously decorated with stylish, contemporary furnishings, yet retaining original details such as the exposed rustic stone walls and antique pieces. It is a fantastic place for a relaxing family holiday.
Inside the villa there is an open-plan living space which is great for spending time together over an evening meal or getting cosy and watching a film in the evening. There are comfy sofas to unwind on and a dining table with views of the garden. The kitchen is fitted with everything you will need to cook up a delicious meal with locally grown produce. There are two boutique-style bedrooms which can sleep up to four guests; one double and one twin room with an en-suite bathroom.
Outside the house is a vast garden offering amazing views over the surrounding countryside as well as a large roof terrace with seating on the first floor. Relax in the sun and enjoy the smells of the neighbouring lavender fields.
The villa is rurally located but is not completely cut off as Valréas is just 5km away and is easily reached by car. It is a good place to shop for groceries, either at the supermarkets or the various street markets, including a truffle market! If you don’t fancy cooking then there are plenty of cafes and restaurants here, from bakeries to romantic bistros. The town also has a wealth of historical monuments and buildings to see.
As well as Valréas, a number of other towns and villages make up the “Enclave of Popes” as the area is also known. Visan is around 8km away and is a charming hilltop village that was settled over 2000 years ago so is packed with history. Here you can spot Roman, Medieval, Renaissance architecture such as the old town gates and numerous beautiful chapels.
Nyons, 20km from the villa, is also a splendid village. Famous for its black olives and olive oil production, why not pop into a mill while here to see the oil being produced before heading out for lunch at a pretty café. 64km away is the stunning city of Avignon which is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is well-worth the hour’s drive and should not be missed.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison MacaronProvence is known for its unspoilt and varied landscapes, where you can get out in to nature and unwind. Whether you want to explore the pine forests, pilgrimage routes through the rolling hills or visit olive groves and lavender farms, it is all on your doorstep at Maison Macaron.
This area is nicknamed ‘The Enclave of Popes’ from when the Papacy was temporarily moved to Avignon over 700 years ago and remained under Papal control until the 18th century. A number of villages and towns make up the Enclave and some of these are really close to the villa, ideal for grocery shopping or going out for a bite to eat.
In the Vaucluse department, close to the border with Drôme, the closest amenities are in Valréas which is just 5km away. This town has shops, eateries, markets and winding streets to wander around. It is also a good place for a day trip as there are museums and historical buildings to see such as Ripert tower and Château de Simiane. If you are in town in June then try to see the parades and dances of the Festival of Petit Saint Jean.
Also part of the Enclave is the Visan, which is 8km away. Settled since pre-Roman times there is lots of lovely architecture to see here like Renaissance mansions or Our Lady of the Vines chapel which is still a site of pilgrimage today. Film fans should come to Visan in July and August when an open-air film festival takes place in the town square.
As you can tell from the vineyards dotted around the hillsides, this area is known for wine and is part of the Côtes du Rhône wine region. There are countless places you can visit to see how wine is produced or just sample it; these vineyard tours often include lunch too. The closest winery is only 2.5km away!
A little further but still just 34km away from Maison Macaron is Orange. This town has a bit of a different feel to it and is full of Celtic as well as Roman sites. Experience the Roman amphitheatre which is one of the best preserved in the world and still holds incredible opera shows. Orange also has terrific cycle routes through sunflower fields and along the Rhône River. Finish your trip here with a glass of locally produced Châteauneuf du Pape.
Avignon is one of the star attractions of this region and is 64km from the villa. Set off early to make the most of this enchanting city. Take a trip to the Palais des Papes, the former Pope’s residence which is the world’s largest Gothic palace and see the magnificent frescoes and towers. Booking on to a guided tour is also advantageous as you get to see more of the city with an expert guide.
