Overview
Live like a local in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence whilst staying in the elegance of Maison Spitfire, only a short stroll from the charming town centre.
It’s a picture-perfect setting with its landscaped garden, majestic trees, heated swimming pool and beautiful terraces – there are also olive trees and a little vineyard to add to the Provençal ambience. The shaded patio features a long dining table made for leisurely feasts of good food and wine whilst the al-fresco lounge is such a pretty place for relaxing throughout the day. A second small swimming pool can be found near wilder grounds, a great spot for cooling off in the hot summer sun, or you may opt to take advantage of the villa's fitness room.
The air-conditioned interiors are mightily impressive, especially the grand kitchen-diner with its huge floor-to-ceiling window leading straight outside. Traditional wood beams and exposed stone walls perfectly complement contemporary furnishings and fittings. There are four attractive bedrooms in the main house, each featuring a modern shower room whilst two further doubles can be found in a garden annexe, allowing flexible sleeping options for up to 10 guests.
Set in a residential area, it is only a short walk into the centre of Saint-Rémy, a world-famous town that is loved for its artistic way of life. Follow the footsteps of Van Gogh, discovering the landscapes that inspired some of his most famous works of art, and visit the monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole. Experience the bustling Wednesday morning market selling all sorts of wonderful local produce and dine in many excellent bistros and restaurants. Visit art galleries, studios, artists’ markets and soak up the charming atmosphere as you wander around the old quarter’s narrow lanes.
Explore the scenery of Les Alpilles Regional Nature Park with olive groves, farmland, vineyards and the most idyllic walking, horse-riding and cycling trails through the hills and limestone mountains.
Picturesque villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières are within easy reach or head a little further afield to Arles, Avignon or Gordes. Try wines in nearby vineyards and châteaux, sample some of France’s best olive oil in Maussane and buy summer melons in Cavaillon – this part of southern France is a pure delight in every way.

Location
About the surrounding area of Maison SpitfireMaison Spitfire is located in a residential area of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just a leisurely stroll from its historic heart. It’s a charming Provençal town with picturesque cafes, upmarket bistros, attractive little shops and a beautiful old quarter to explore.
On a Wednesday morning you should walk into town early to experience the popular market selling fresh produce from local farms and Provençal crafts. In the summer months look out for artists’ markets on a Sunday morning and of course at all times of year you can visit the town’s many galleries and studios.
Follow the Van Gogh trail in Saint-Rémy, ending at the monastery at Saint-Paul de Mausole, and discover some of the sights that inspired some of his greatest works. Van Gogh is celebrated in Arles (around 30km away) and art-lovers will also appreciate the fantastic sound and light show in the caves at nearby Carrières de Lumières.
Les Alpilles Regional Nature Park is especially wonderful for walking and hiking with trails for many abilities passing olive groves, farmland, dense woodland and rolling hills as well as the more challenging limestone mountains. Close to Saint-Rémy, stroll along the Canal des Alpines often surrounded by shady trees, ideal for the summer. Cycling, horse-riding and pony-trekking are also popular in this region.
Other places to visit in Les Alpilles include incredible Les Baux-de-Provence (11km), one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages with its historic château, and picturesque Maussane-les-Alpilles, home to a number of restaurants and some of France’s finest olive oil. Eygalières is another picture-perfect village, with restaurants and a Friday morning market, or spend time exploring some of the vineyards and wineries close to Saint-Rémy and Les Baux.
A little further afield, enjoy a day in the small city of Avignon with its UNESCO World Heritage sites and bustling markets or head over to the Luberon, one of Provence’s most beguiling regions with a wealth of perched historic villages such as Gordes, Bonnieux and Roussillon, all within an hour by car.

Best Suited For: All AgesSaint-Rémy and Les Alpilles is a wonderful place for families with much to appeal to a variety of ages.
In Saint-Rémy itself, follow the Van Gogh trail and learn about the different places that inspired some of the artist’s greatest works. Finish at the monastery, Saint-Paul de Mausole, where he spent the end of his life. Arles is another great town for young Van-Gogh fans to visit with its trail and Fondation Vincent van Gogh.
Nearby, close to Les Baux-de-Provence, Carrières de Lumières is an amazing light and sound show in a former quarry which projects famous paintings on to the walls accompanied by music.
Visit Les Baux-de-Provence with youngsters and pick up a children’s map (called a ‘paper chase’) from the tourist office with little activities to do as you explore. The historic château is also fascinating – get there early to avoid the summer crowds as this is such a popular village to visit.
For outdoor enthusiasts you will find some lovely family walking trails, cycle rides, tennis, horse-riding, rock-climbing and pony trekking across Les Alpilles.
