Pass cypresses, umbrella pines and vines as you follow the track up to this beautifully renovated bastide set in 3.5 hectares of grounds only a 5-minute drive from Bonnieux, one of the enchanting perched villages of the Luberon.

Vert De Mer dates back to the 18th century and has been sensitively restored to create a gorgeous holiday abode for 8 guests. The character of this home will enchant you as you step in to the cosy lounge with its fireplace, then through to the elegant kitchen so wonderfully equipped and leading to a terrace for dining beneath the ancient oak.

With a slightly unusual layout, the four bedrooms are scattered across various levels, some reached from the outside. As you follow the warren of stairs both inside and out come across exposed stone corners, wood beamed ceilings and a blend of traditional and new furnishings. There’s an air of charming simplicity throughout alongside 21st century additions. TVs and docking stations can be found in most bedrooms and there is underfloor cooling across the main parts of the house.

It's simply idyllic to sit outside and listen to the sound of the cicadas as you enjoy an evening apéritif on the terraces or dine in the pool house by its grand stone columns and fireplace/barbecue. A traditional borie and lavender field adds to the Provençal ambience. Indeed, this is authentic Provence at its very best with the most stunning outlook – you can even catch a glimpse of hilltop Lacoste in the distance.  

Bonnieux is around 1.5km by car, one of the iconic perched villages of the Luberon so loved for its historic character, shuttered houses, weekly market and glorious views of the surrounding landscapes of vineyards and orchards. To the south is a wonderful cedar forest for shady walks along marked trails.  

Other pretty villages of the region include Ménerbes, Roussillon, Lourmarin and Gordes, all classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Meanwhile, the handsome town of Apt hosts the Luberon’s largest market on a Saturday morning, a fine way to pick up a wealth of Provençal delicacies to enjoy on your picture-perfect terrace overlooking the beautiful scenery at Vert De Mer.

What you should know…

  • The house is set across several levels with some bedrooms/bathrooms in annexes and/or accessed from the outside. Please see the ‘Layout’ for further information.
  • Guests need to be able to safely manage many steps/steep stairs across this characterful home both inside and out as well as some unprotected terraced levels (children will need to be supervised). 
  • There is underfloor cooling throughout the main house (except for the bedrooms that are accessed externally).

In the very heart of the Luberon, this 18th century bastide is set in 3.5 hectares of grounds only 1.5km from the perched village of Bonnieux. This is a great base for exploring this enchanting region of Provence.

Bonnieux is a beautiful hilltop village so loved for its characterful lanes, pretty houses and stunning vistas of vineyards and orchards below. There’s a small handful of restaurants and shops as well as a lovely weekly market on a Friday morning. To the south of the village is the magnificent Forêt des cèdres du Luberon where you can follow marked walking trails through the towering cedar trees.

Picture-perfect Lacoste (4km) is just a short drive away whilst other iconic villages across the Luberon include Ménerbes (9km), Gordes (17km) and Roussillon (12km), three of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Heading south instead, soak up the character of Lourmarin (14km), perhaps combined with a visit to Cucuron (20km) or Ansouis (23km). Gastronomes note that most villages host delightful weekly markets and there are many high-end restaurants across the area, some with Michelin stars.

A little further afield, canoe or kayak along the Sorgue or Durance rivers, come across exciting tree-top adventure centres near Rustrel and Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or discover a range of cycling trails for all abilities across the Luberon and beyond.

The historic sites of Avignon can be reached in 50km or venture to the café terraces, shady plane trees and museums of Aix-en-Provence, less than an hour by car.

The swimming pool is delightful and there’s boules and table tennis to enjoy across the beautiful grounds surrounded by iconic landscapes of the Luberon. A cot and highchair can be requested – however, please note that due to the many old steps, terraced levels and narrow staircases throughout, this home is better suited to older children/teens.

The Luberon offers a wealth of outdoor adventures from gentle walks to more challenging hikes, horse-riding, rock-climbing and cycling. The beautiful cedar forest to the south of Bonnieux is a wonderful place for long shady walks following marked trails.

Discover canoeing/kayaking along the Durance and Sorgue Rivers whilst adventurous families may also enjoy the tree-top activity centres near Rustrel and Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, both around half an hour by car.

Other family attractions further south include Zoo Barben (44km), the popular theme park, Parc Grimmland (30km), and Le Village des Automates (40km) with its car-themed rides and activities.

Security deposit €1500 charged to client's credit card as a pre-authorisation at least 2 weeks prior to arrival and refunded two weeks after departure, subject to full inspection.

End of stay cleaning included? Yes, standard changeover clean included. Guests are required to leave the accommodation clean, tidy and in the same condition as on their arrival. Any extra cleaning, laundry, maintenance and/or rubbish disposal required will be charged against the security deposit.
Tax French Visitors Tax payable locally in cash (typically costs €1-€10 per adult per night - please enquire if exact amount is required).
Pool heating charge? Extra €200 per week, payable locally. Please note that like all heated pools, pool heating and water temperature are reliant on weather and outside temperatures.
