Overview
This light-filled contemporary villa is surrounded by picture-perfect vineyards below the perched village of Oppède le Vieux in the idyllic Luberon region of Provence.
In the calmness of a vast wine estate which is owned by a famous English filmmaker, guests at Villa Pamplemousse can truly embrace the authentic essence of Provence. A modern abode sleeping up to 6 guests, there is a great sense of space across the Provençal lounge and sleek kitchen with doors opening out to the covered terrace.
Alongside high-end features such as air-conditioning, a Smart TV and iPod dock, guests can appreciate artwork across the home, stylish furnishings and even occasional props from the owner’s films making this beautiful villa unique in its own special way.
Upstairs you will find two sumptuous king-size double bedrooms, one with a gorgeous bathroom and the other with an elegant shower room. There’s a third en suite bedroom situated in an annexe by the swimming pool. If you are looking for further bedrooms, consider 3-bedroom Villa Grenade next door – see Villa Pamplemousse and Villa Grenade for more information.
The pretty garden outside features a swimming pool which is gently heated from May to September alongside a summer kitchen and barbecue area looking out towards the olive trees. Relax on one of the terraces with a glass of the estate’s own wine as you soak up the tranquil vibe of this wonderful house.
A one-hour winery tour and tasting of all the different wines is included where you can learn about the Luberon AOP and the various stages of wine-making. The estate has a rich heritage dating back over two hundred years and is now a multi-generational project where Provençal winemaking traditions are followed.
Be inspired by the breathtaking beauty all around you as you explore nearby villages and landscapes of the Luberon. You can stroll to the local village, around 20 minutes on foot, with its épicerie, boulangerie, café and restaurants whilst the medieval hilltop gems of Oppède le Vieux, Lacoste and Ménerbes are a very short drive away. Visit charming markets for summer cherries, Cavaillon melons, olive oil and wine alongside a wealth of lavender products and potter around other villages of the Luberon such as Gordes, Bonnieux and Roussillon.
Canoe or kayak along the Sorgue River near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, seek antiques at the Sunday morning brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, follow Van Gogh’s footsteps in bustling Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and be captivated by the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon, the capital of Vaucluse and just one of the many historic jewels of this alluring region in southern France.

The three closest airports are Avignon (29km), Marseille (68km) and Nîmes (80km) whilst Gare d’Avignon TGV (42km) is just under an hour away – direct trains from Paris Gare de Lyon take around 2 hours 40 minutes.
The wine estate consists of approximately thirty hectares of vines – the owners follow the traditional Provençal method of winegrowing with respect for the estate’s biodiversity and they produce the wine in their modern cellar. The estate’s shop and winery (a couple of minutes away on foot) is open seven days a week from June to September (closed Sundays and Mondays in low season) and a one-hour 'classic' wine tour and tasting is included in the villa rental.
There is a small Luberon village around 1.5km – a 20-minute walk along country roads (no pavement) or a short drive. Here you will find a boulangerie, a couple of restaurants and a small grocery store whilst there are larger supermarkets in Coustellet (6.5km), also home to a handful of artisan shops and a Sunday morning Farmer’s market. The Lavender Museum is in Coustellet and you may pass the Musée de l'Huile d'Olive (3.5km) en route.
The incredible perched village of Oppède le Vieux (4km) is close by – it’s like a step back in time as you explore its medieval centre and soak up its rich heritage whilst admiring the magnificent views all around. There are spectacular walks in and around the village – the hike up to Église Notre-Dame Dalidon is especially rewarding.
Other iconic villages of the Luberon include hilltop Ménerbes (3.5km), the place that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’, and red-hued Roussillon (17km), a village of extraordinary beauty and history. Visit lovely local markets in places such as artistic Gordes (12km) on a Tuesday morning and historic Apt (22km) on a Saturday morning looking out for regional specialities such as cherries, Cavaillon melons, candied fruit, olive oil, wine and, of course, lavender products.
L’Isle sur La Sorgue (17km) is famous for its Sunday morning market and brocante and it is a delightful Provençal town any day of the week with its waterways and antique stores. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (17km) is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts and you will find canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Sorgue. There are of course many wonderful walks and challenging hikes across the Luberon alongside cycling trails, mountain biking, horse-riding and rock-climbing.
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon (37km), sample the wines of the Rhône valley in and around Châteauneuf-du-Pape (48km), follow Van Gogh’s footsteps in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (35km) or Arles (65km) and admire the landscapes that so inspired Cézanne near Aix-en-Provence (62km), just over an hour away by car.

Region
With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.
Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.
Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.
To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.
Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.
The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.
Kids
Best Suited For: TeensVilla Pamplemousse does not allow children under the age of 12.
Nevertheless, older children can appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of this location and make the most of the Wi-Fi, Smart TV and swimming pool of course.
Families will fall in love with the landscapes of the Luberon, perfect for long walks and more challenging hikes through woodland, orchards, farmland and vineyards via some of the iconic perched villages of the region. Keen cyclists take note of a wonderful trail that connects nearby Beaumettes to Apt and beyond, following a former railway line that passes poppy fields and the Calavon River (La Véloroute du Calavon). Rock-climbing is popular in the tiny Luberon village of Buoux.
You are also well located for reaching Fontaine-de-Vaucluse where you will find canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Sorgue River alongside a tree-top activity centre near Lagnes.
A little further afield towards Avignon, visit the fascinating Grottes de Thouzon or spend the day at the theme park, Parc Spirou Provence, and its neighbouring waterpark, Wave Island.

When did you become the owner?
1992.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
Before the 19th century, the surrounding region, the ‘Comtat Venaissin’, belonged to the papacy and, at that time, the Mas was a place of healing, probably run by Italian nuns.
The first official mention of the Mas appeared on the land register of Napoleon in 1831. The estate then belonged to the General Baron Robert, one of the illustrious generals and surgeon or "health officer" of Napoleon’s army.
For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really...
Must do? See the art and light exhibition in the quarry at Les Beaux-de-Provence.
Must eat? If you make a day trip to Marseille, then a real Bouillabaisse at Chez FonFon.
Must see? The views from the top of Mont Ventoux on a clear day - the road along the Gorges de la Nesque is the most amazing route there and back.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
There are so many gorgeous little villages to explore, enjoy them by going earlier in the morning before the masses arrive so that after a wonderful lunch out, you can come back to the villa to enjoy the peaceful serenity in the garden and around the pool.

Complete joy
This property is even lovelier in person, we had an amazing stay. The property manager who welcomed us (and continued to look after us) was heaven. We were even spoiled with some local produce and wine on arrival. It's a beautifully decorated and kept place with everything you could possibly need. Unbelievably comfortable beds and big spacious showers. Everyone we encountered, like the cleaners, were so sweet and friendly. It was a complete joy being there and we were so sad to leave.
Don't miss out! Reserve now and get a full refund if you change your mind within 48hrs.
