The beach enjoys a couple of beach tavernas, sun loungers and umbrellas and a kite club in the middle section of the beach where you can learn to kitesurf. The closest village to Chalikounas as the crow flies is Agios Georgios South though you have to drive around the enchanting lake. It is a shorter drive to Messonghi. Also close by are Alonaki Beach, Prasoudi Beach, Issos Beach and Agios Gordios Beach. This coastline of golden sand is simply astounding. Kitesurfers enjoy thrilling days on the beaches, particularly Chalikounas Beach. Visitors also enjoy fishing and hiking around the lake. Lake Korission is a coastal lagoon separated from the sea by the fabulous Chalikounas Beach. The lagoon was created by the sand dunes that cut the lake’s basin off from the sea. The lake is over 5 km long from one end to the other and roughly 1.5 km at its widest. The lake is home to native and migrating birds including seagulls, owls, buzzards, swallows, cormorants and if you are lucky, flamingoes. Bird watchers love this protected wetland with more than one hundred and twenty different bird species. Cycling is very popular to as there are many routes and hidden paths where you can get close to nature and breathe in fresh air.
There are many attractions within very easy reach of the villa. Corfu Town, birthplace of the late Duke of Edinburgh, is one of the most beautiful, graceful and elegant towns in Greece. Corfu Town falls between two great Venetian coastal fortresses and within lies a very modern capital brimming with elegant mansions, magnificent palaces, beautiful squares and no fewer than thirty nine churches including the beautiful Church of Saint Spiridon. The Duke of Edinburgh was born at the fabulous Mon Repos Palace. Next to the palace gardens you will find the calm waters of the Mon Repos Beach. To the north, you will find Faliraki Beach. The town’s stunning architecture has many influences including Sicilian, Venetian, French and English. The entire Old Town is declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, a tightly-packed warren of cobbled winding lanes bursting with lively bars, boutiques and fine restaurants. You will also see timeless alleys with the day’s washing stretching from balcony to balcony, such a pretty scene, especially with colourful bougainvillea draped everywhere. There are also some interesting museums including the Byzantine Museum of Corfu which is housed in a 15th century church. Others are the Museum of Ceramic Art, the D Solomos Museum and the Asian Art Museum.
Close to Corfu Town and north of Gouvia is the magical Kontokali peninsula. The town is named after Christophoros Kontokalis, a sea captain and shipowner who was awarded he estate by the Venetians after his successful participation in the Battle of Lepant. It is definitely worth a visit, as is Gouvia. Gouvia is a charming, former fishing village which is now a modern holiday resort with plenty of amenities for all ages. It boasts a pretty pebble beach and a stunning marina. It also offers many atmospheric restaurants, bars and cafes along the main street of the village. Its 18th century shipyard is still remarkably intact. The views from Gouvia are really stunning with the sparkling Ionian Sea and Corfu Town on the horizon.

Prasoudi Beach got its name from ‘Prasoulida’ which is a species of chives that grow on the cliff above the sea. It is a local favourite surrounded by green hills and olive trees. There are a few tavernas offering delicious seafood delicacies. Of course, Chalikounas Beach is the most impressive in the south west of Corfu. The road in takes you past verdant olive groves, citrus orchards and vineyards. Visitors can stop to by fresh fruit, olive oil and delicious house wine. The Gardiki Castle, a 13th century Byzantine castle is also enroute. Children love the dunes, the sand, the lagoon and the beautiful waters of Chalikounas Beach. Brave children can get out on the water on stand-up paddle boards and older ones can try their hand at kitesurfing. The winds on the beach tend to pick up around 16.00 so you will see lots of surfing and sailing equipment coming out then. Issos Beach is often called ‘The Sahara of Corfu’ for its beautiful sands and enormous dunes. It also boasts a watersports centre and enjoys the most amazing sunsets against a backdrop of mountainous dunes.
Children love Aqualand, Corfu’s water park. It is just the place for a thrilling day out and offers a wonderful combination of fun, relaxation and adrenaline. The park caters for all ages and boasts a 350 metre long lazy river, a wave pool, an interactive pool with a rope course and jacuzzi, kayaking, family rafting and extreme slides such as the Double Twister, Catapult, the 12 metre high Kamikaze slides and the Hurricane Twist. You can buy a half day pass, a full day pass, a two day pass or a weekly one.
For a completely different, non-water based day you can head to the majestic Mount Pantokrator. It is the highest peak in Corfu and dominates the island’s northeast region. It boasts the most amazing views of the whole of Corfu Island. On a clear day you can even see Albania and Italy even though Italy is 130km away! You can drive or hike to the mountain top, stopping at traditional Greek villages on the way. The zigzagging mountain road starts halfway between Ipsos and Barbati Beach passing through Spartilas and Strinilas, one of the island’s highest villages. You can enjoy delicious local moscato wine from one of the village’s taverns. If you want to hike to the top you can start at the 14th century village of Old Perithia. It is a 3 hour round trip through thick forests, olive groves and rocky terrain. At the top you can visit the 17th century monastery.
In Corfu Town, children enjoy climbing the walls of the Old Fortress, the Venetian fort built in the 15th century and the New Fortress. The fortresses boast fantastic views of the turquoise waters. Also in Corfu Town, you can take a trip in Kalypso Star, the glass-bottomed boat that leaves the harbour to explore the Ionian Sea’s fascinating marine life. A ten-minute boat trip from Corfu Town takes you to the tiny island of Vidos where you can enjoy feeding the rabbits, seeing the peacocks, swimming and having lunch at the charming taverna.
