If you’re looking for a taste of the real Corfu, Lefkimmi is a good place to start. This small southern town hasn’t been overdeveloped with tourists in mind, but you will find the things you need. There are several restaurants within a short walk of each other, and it’s only a few minutes’ drive to the nearest beaches, Alikes and Bouka Beach among them.

You will find quaint villages and areas of natural beauty all over the island, and there are plenty more beaches along the way. Several are ranked among the best in Greece. Paleokastritsa, Myrtiotissa and Kavos are all on the list, the latter being the most popular beach in the south of the island. It’s only a 15-minute drive from Lefkimmi and offers beach bars and sporting activities.

Head up to Corfu Town and experience the island’s enchanting capital. Be sure to stop by the Spianada – it’s a spot everyone knows. The landscaped gardens and bandstand of this seafront square give it a little grandeur, something it shares with its neighbour, the Liston. This covered gallery of café terraces is the place to be in Corfu. You should definitely treat yourself to a visit while you’re in town. The Spianada sometimes hosts live music performances and entertainment too.

Make some time to see the nearby Old Fortress – it will reward you with some wonderful views once you have made the considerable climb to the top. Another of Corfu’s most notable buildings is the 19th-century Palace of St Michael and St George, originally built as the residence of the British High Commissioner during a period of British rule. If heritage is your thing, a tour of the palace is a must. The excellent Museum of Asian Art now occupies part of the building and, after almost 100 years in existence, has around 15,000 intriguing pieces in its collection.

Corfu has numerous churches, some of which have interesting art collections of their own, like the Byzantine Church of St Jason & St Sosipater. The church with the red dome you may spot is Saint Spyridon’s Church, where the Corfu’s patron saint was laid to rest – it’s notable for its painted ceiling and the tallest bell tower on the island. You can see the work of local artists down the centuries at the Municipal Gallery, also found at the Palace of St Michael and St George, while the Archaeological Museum is the place if you want to go back even further in time.

The Campiello, as the medieval quarter of the town is known, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s as jumbled and eclectic as you would hope it to be, with narrow streets and hidden squares, feeling like a little bit of Italy on a Greek island.

The Island/Getting There

One of the largest and greenest of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is far more than its trademark blue-hued seas and sandy coastline. With its UNESCO World Heritage status and unbeatable strolling opportunities, there is no better place to start exploring than the main town and its historic old quarter, where ancient churches, scattered ruins and a handful of museums mean Corfu’s layers of history can be found just about everywhere. And if you’re in need of a cosy abode, take a look at our flawless villas in Corfu.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Zuri is an excellent choice for a family break. An outdoor pool and terrace, beautiful gardens and the beach just a few steps away will definitely score points with the kids. The house also has plenty of TVs, a games console and Wi-Fi should they need any more entertainment.

As well as the beach just outside your door, there’s the popular Kavos beach just down the coast. Many more well organised and family friendly beaches can be found around the island. At Agios Petros, over on the west coast, you will also find the Corfu Aquarium which has marine life of all kinds to see.

At the big Aqualand water park, about 20 minutes’ drive from Corfu Town, there is a huge range of rides, pools and slides that everyone can enjoy. With thrills like the Tornado and Catapult, and a pirate ship and baby pool for younger children, the park has something for every age – adults will have a great time too.

Another activity you can enjoy together is a glass-bottomed boat tour. Departing from the Old Port in Corfu Town, the craft is big enough for a few dozen people, and shows you the creatures of the Ionian Sea you might otherwise never see.

A boat trip is always a winning idea, so you could also go island hopping, visiting the likes of pretty Paxos and peaceful Sivota. For a shorter excursion, make your way to Kanoni, a short distance from the centre of Corfu Town, and make the 5-minute crossing to Mouse Island. This is one of the most picturesque spots in the area, and a visitor favourite.

Corfu Town has lots more that kids will love. Look out for the immersive museum Casa Parlante, which depicts the life of a 19th-century noble family in Corfu, with animatronic figures and even the sounds and smells of the time. The medieval part of the town also gives a look at the past – the Campiello is a place to get lost in the labyrinth of streets, however, so keep an eye on them!

Make sure you visit the grand café terrace at the Liston, possibly the most famous street in town. It’s right by the Spianada Square with its elegant park, which is a lovely spot to stop for a break. Aside from the Liston, there are loads of places to eat around the Old Town, with pizzas and fast food alongside traditional Greek dishes.

Corfu chicken, known locally as pastitsada, is one of the best-known dishes associated with the island, and young diners are sure to love it. For dessert, bougatsa and karithopita are worth looking out for – a sweet cream pie and tasty walnut cake respectively.
