What you should know…
- You can get the occasional power cut in Crete but fortunately the Atlantica Caldera Villas benefit from their own generator which kicks in immediately if there’s an outage.
- The swimming pool is gated from the inside however children should always be supervised

Location
About the surrounding area of Caldera Villa IILocated in the coastal resort of Platanias, named after the river once known as "Lardanos" in ancient times, is only 11 km west of Chania. The modern part of the town is a bustling destination with waterfront bars, restaurants, hotels, and sandy beaches, while the hillside area, Ano Platanias, retains its historical charm and traditional character. Along with the neighbouring Agia Marina, it is one of the most visited areas on the island, offering a variety of experiences suitable for families, couples, and groups of friends.
Chania, which also has an airport, is a recommended destination for visitors. The city has a rich history shaped by various civilizations, including the Minoans, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. Many of its historical influences are reflected in the Venetian harbour, which is home to restaurants, museums, churches, and craft shops. The harbour, with its preserved Turkish and Venetian architectural elements, provides a glimpse into the past. Watching the sunset by the old lighthouse is a memorable experience, though the area’s charm varies throughout the day.
Beyond the coast, Crete’s mountainous interior offers opportunities for exploration, featuring historic churches and quiet villages that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. How to reach Chania
There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.
By plane: Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.
By ferry: If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. Fabulous Family Holiday
We’ve just come back from a fabulous week at Atlantica Caldera Villa. In short it’s a great place for a family friendly holiday – we were my wife and I, two kids (1 and 3) and the in-laws.
Highlights: extremely spacious, fully air-conditioned, very clean/new/easy, indoor/outdoor pool (fun for the kids), huge bedrooms (all en-suite), mid-stay cleaning (including replacement bedding and towels), when the DVD player broke it was replaced within 2 hours! Just a five minute walk to a beautiful beach (and an excellent beachside restaurant), MANY MANY restaurants to choose from. 20 minutes from Chania which is well worth seeing for the harbour area (you can also do boat trips from here which are great value and lots of fun). You’re only 30 minutes from Chania airport.
Lowlights: Make sure you’ve got an accurate location for the property as it’s not easy to find without the sat nav, if you’re looking for sea views from the terrace then this isn’t the place for you, the washing machine is in a separate neighbouring building (not an issue but worth mentioning), it hit 40 degrees during our stay!
