Villa Vari is set in the Cretan countryside, with magnificent mountain views, in the tiny village of Varipetron, near the north coast of the idyllic island of Crete in the azure Aegean Sea. The villa is eighteen kilometres from Chania International Airport. The village of Varipetron is four hundred metres walk through orange, lemon, and olive groves. For provisions for your holiday, it’s a two and a half kilometres drive to the nearest village with minimarts, whilst the town of Chania is eight kilometres from the villa, with a selection large selection of supermarkets and stores. Walk the narrow streets of the old town of Chania, down to the Venetian harbour, with its sixteenth-century lighthouse.

Visit the Nautical and Archaeological Museums, and take a stroll in the Municipal Gardens, before enjoying a delicious dinner of freshly caught fish at a waterfront restaurant.  There are five fabulous beaches within a six-mile radius of the villa. Glaros has a secluded sandy shore, with a rocky bottom, and is ideal for snorkelling; Stalos has an organised golden sandy beach and mini golf; the white sands of Kalamaki has sun loungers, brollies, lifeguards and showers, and is lined with shops and cafes; the popular Iguana at Agios Apostoli has golden sands with crystal clear waters, and is close to Chania; whilst the crescent-shaped Yannis has fine sand, is superb for swimming, and climbing over rocks to find secret caves.

A short drive will take you to the port of Souda, with the archaeological site of ancient Aptera, an Ottoman fort, and fabulous seafood by the seashore. Explore the three hundred caves the island hides, hike over hillsides, streams, and rocky ravines to discover watermills and ruins, and stop along the way at a local winery to taste the fruits of the many vineyards. All aboard a boat trip, where you can scuba or snorkel underwater ruins, or jet skis and paraglide with one of the many water sports clubs. Spend the day in the port town of Heraklion. Visit the ancient Palace of Knossos, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, walk along the Venetian walls, and stroll through the old quarter, where you can shop for souvenirs.

Go further afield to Vai, Crete’s easternmost tip, where you will find lush forests and a unique date palm. Explore Psychro Cave, reputedly the birthplace of Zeus, and rock climb Mount Ida to find the Ideon Cave. Sitia Geopark is three hundred and fifty square kilometres of the island’s diverse ecosystem, where you can trek through gorges, bathe on beaches, walk the wetlands, and bird-watch. Hike the Richtis Gorge, and stroll through streams to reach the twenty-metre waterfall, where you can cool off in the inviting pool.

Find solace in the fifteenth-century Toplou Monastery, and admire its beautiful Byzantine icons. Take a boat tour to visit the intriguing island of Spinalonga, once a former leper colony with a Venetian fortress, and now an open-air museum. Go to the harbour town of Agios Nikolaos, that uniquely houses a lake in its centre, with an Archaeological Museum full of Minoan treasures, and lots of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants in which to sit, and watch the local life go by.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.
