Region

On the northern coast, the thriving city of Heraklion is the perfect destination for visitors wishing to learn all about Crete’s incredible history whilst soaking up the hospitality and vibrancy of the island’s impressive capital.

Heraklion is also a wonderful gateway to the charming coastal village of Agia Pelagia, the popular resorts of Hersonissos and Kato Gouves, the nightlife of Malia as well as the stunning landscapes of the Psiloritis Natural Park.

The city’s heritage dates back thousands of years, as can be seen just south of Heraklion at the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site, the Palace of Knossos, once the centre of Minoan civilisation. Keen historians should also visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and Historical Museum of Crete.

Meanwhile, back in Heraklion’s old town, admire stunning views as you stroll along the Venetian fortifications dating back to the time when the island was under Venetian rule, then look out for beautiful architecture from the Ottoman Empire.

Shopping in Heraklion is a delight. Pick up Cretan delicacies at the bustling Central Market, then explore the heart of the old town with narrow lanes and grand squares, coming across little shops, boutiques and historic churches as well as cafes, restaurants and bars. In the height of the summer, embrace the city’s wonderful ambience with café terraces, outdoor theatre and bars and clubs near the waterfront.

Enjoy the hearty cuisine of Heraklion where traditional dishes are prepared using locally sourced ingredients such as dakos salad made with Cretan tomatoes, feta and olive oil or slow-cooked stamnagathi with wild greens from the island. Grilled octopus, Cretan fish soup and other seafood specialities are served with pride in tavernas and restaurants across the region.

Head to the family-friendly shores of Ammoudara beach with its blue-flag, sun-beds and beachside bars, also a popular spot for kite-boarding. A little further west is the picturesque fishing village of Agia Pelagia with another gorgeous beach, turquoise coloured water and tavernas overlooking the sea.

Venturing east instead, the popular tourist resorts of Hersonissos and Kato Gouves offer long sandy shores, summer sun-beds and a wealth of watersports as well as waterparks, boat trips, cafes, restaurants and bars. Nor forgetting the nightlife and beaches of Malia as well as the Minoan Palace of Malia, not far from the idyllic Potamos Beach.

The large pool is sure to keep them busy for hours, while modern TVs are dotted around the house for endless indoor fun.

The patios and pergola-covered terraces are sprawling, where little ones can roam freely and have an unforgettable time. The adjoining outdoor kitchen is ideal for an afternoon of family cooking. Whip up their favourite treats and enjoy them al-fresco by the beach.

Reviews

  • Stunning views

    on 13/11/2022

So peaceful and relaxing with stunning views. We had such a warm welcome and delicious food all week. There was a lovely heated pool and equipment to use in the sea. Tranquil place to holiday.

  • Perfect

    on 17/06/2022

If you seek total immersion into the Hellenic way of life, then Villa Ferberite is the place for you. The ancient Greeks aspired to the deep blue sky, the brilliant night heavens, the soothing beat of the Ionian sea, the rugged countryside, and, ultimately, the history, art, architecture and culture of Creta's environs ... and so will you! Great house. Great people. Unequalled setting worth the effort to get there, on this southern-most edge of Europe only 110 miles from the Egyptian shore.

  • Just fantastic

    on 02/06/2022

This home was designed with incredible attention to detail, and all of the details are designed to make guests comfortable. We enjoyed a week with a balance of exploring the area and relaxing by the pool, walking the beach, and dining with friends. There were 7 couples, and there was plenty of space for a quiet retreat to read and nap, but there were also comfortable gathering places for everyone to be together. We retained the services of a cook for several meals, as the location is a bit remote from restaurants. The services of a housekeeper and an on site handyman were provided to ensure our comfort. This is the 9th villa our group has rented in Europe over a period of 16 years, and it was an unanimous vote that it was the loveliest accommodation ever.

  • By far, the best!

    on 29/05/2022

We have rented a number of villas to accommodate a large group of friends and this experience was amazing. The villa was beautifully designed with excellent amenities. Our hosts were especially warm and helpful and supplied us with a great staff including a cook on request. The rooms were very nice but the common areas (at least five of them!) were where I spent my time...The beautiful view followed us everywhere! The sea was a bit chilly in May so we took advantage of the lovely heated pool. The location was a bit remote and not easy to navigate but we managed several side trips to Heraklion, Knossos, Irapetra, to name a few, and a lovely winery.
