Location
About the surrounding area of Villa AnankeJewel of Crete’s northern coast, and served by an international airport, the large town of Chania enjoys a stunning location between the sea and the mountains, and is rather picturesque itself. Known for its Venetian harbour with centrepiece lighthouse, it’s a place that feels unspoilt, and offers plenty of historical interest as well as enchanting scenery.
The harbour is a good place to start exploring Chania – its colourful buildings and notable landmarks like the Ottoman Baths make it both immediately distinctive and ideal for a photo or two. Numerous restaurant terraces line the side of the harbour, which is also the starting point for one of the town’s big tourist attractions. Captain Nick’s glass-bottomed boat offers extensive tours with the chance to go snorkelling and spot marine wildlife.
Several of the town’s museums are also not far away, including the Archaeological and Folklore Museums, as are the town’s marketplaces – you will find lots of food stalls selling local produce at the Old Chania Market. Beyond the Old Town, Chania offers many of the entertainment experiences you’ll find in most European cities, such as cinemas, nightclubs and escape rooms. A little further out of town, you can also enjoy days out at the Botanic Gardens – stop by the restaurant for a stunning view over this extensive park of trees, vineyards and herb gardens.
More natural beauty can be found on the opposite side of the island, where the breathtaking Samaria Gorge makes for perfect hiking territory. Organised tours make the most of the stunning countryside too, offering visits to see the local wine, olive oil, cheese or honey being produced.
One thing you won’t need a guide for are the countless beaches which line the northern coast of Crete. While you could travel for quite some distance on this large island, there are several close to Chania that are worth a look – Golden Beach, Neo Chora and Germaniko Pouli are among the nearest and family-friendly, while the likes of Balos and Falassarna are a good 60km away but idyllic enough to be worth the trip.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesIt would be hard not to love Villa Ananke, and the kids will find no shortage of things to keep them amused during your stay. First up, the infinity pool which comes with its own smaller, children’s pool – both have an amazing sea view. They can soak up the sun or just relax in the shade on the terraces, or pop inside for a movie, TV or games in the cinema room, plus there are bikes available to go exploring. The whole place is equipped with Wi-Fi, inside and out, and if you need them looked after while you go out, there’s a babysitter available too.
The beach is just a short distance away, as are local cafés and restaurants. If you make the journey into Chania, you have sights old and new to explore together. Among the town’s landmarks are the Venetian Lighthouse and the striking Ottoman Baths, giving a taste of Chania’s history. If they are into things historic, Chania offers fortresses, monasteries and a variety of museums of everything from archaeology and typography to naval history, at the Maritime Museum of Crete.
If that’s not their thing, Chania is very much a city of today, with great dining options and the best shopping in the region at a host of independent retailers. Various festivals and events will capture their imagination, including carnivals and parades throughout the year, and live music and theatre events during summer.
To really get to know the place, take the kids on an organised excursion, like the popular ‘Tastes of Chania’ food tour, which offers plenty of nibbles of the local cuisine. About 20 minutes from the centre of town, you can always rely on the Aqua Creta water-park in Limnoupolis for a fun day out, or for a multi-sensory experience, try Minoan’s World, which boasts a 3D museum and a 9D cinema, where you can expect the unexpected.

What a stunning place
Wow, what a stunning place to stay with so much to do in a lovely part of crete! The views from the villa are absolutely beautiful and really makes you feel like you on holiday in paradise from early morning to late evening with the sunset. The villa also has all the mod cons you could ever wish for and is amazing quality.

The view is breathtaking, and the house is stunning
I had the privilege of staying in that place for 5 days. I can now clearly state that pictures are nothing close to reality. The view is breathtaking, and the house is stunning. Having an espresso from that bean-to -cup provided coffee machine while watching the sunset from that infinity pool is an unforgettable experience and all that just after a great Greek barbeque and for dessert watching a movie Netflix in that home movie room just gives a different meaning to the word ‘enjoyment’. Great place to be!
